The Tacoma Elks Club held their annual Extravaganza in the spring of 1953. Elks members owned many businesses in Tacoma; view of billboard with signs listing individual member-owned businesses, many signs have caricatures. The largest sign is that of Jack Roberts, co-owner of Narrows Marina.

Members of the Afifi Shrine examine a book of tickets to sell for the Shrine "All Star" Circus, to be held at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse April 9-12, 1953. They are all wearing fezzes with the Afifi logo imprinted on them. Second man to the right is believed to be Mayor John H. Anderson who was persuaded to buy the first book of tickets. Behind the men is a large cutout of a Afifi clown holding a sign filled with circus information. The eighth annual Shrine Circus would have Jerry Colonna, famed comic, as master of ceremonies. There would be six performances held over four days and would be open to the general public. Colonna was expected to ride atop the Shrine's circus calliope in the Daffodil Parade on April 11th. The 23rd Annual convention of the Northwest Loyal Order of Moose was held in Tacoma in July of 1938. Over 2500 members of 32 lodges from all parts of the Northwest, covering Alaska to the California border and east to Montana, descended on the Winthrop Hotel, convention headquarters. Over 1000 participated in the parade held on July 22nd, from its formation at 7th & Pacific to its conclusion at the Winthrop. Here women in white uniforms are pictured marching down a Tacoma street. Herds of Moose have descended on Tacoma for their 23rd Annual Northwest Moose Association Convention. One of the highlights of the three day affair is the Loyal Order of Moose Convention Parade. Photograph shows men in uniform marching in front of Safeway's Bay City Market and Hotel Ridpath on Pacific Avenue. All local bands, drum corps and drill teams were invited to join at the parade's formation at 7th & Pacific. Over 1000 responded and marched in the parade. (T. The theme of the January 31, 1953, dance would be the "Bums' Rush", when Co-Ed Junior Federated Club members and invited guests would dress as hobos in rags and casual clothing. Shriners of the Afifi temple assemble in two ceremonial lines. The location of this picture is not given. Shriners from around the state assembled in Tacoma and departed by a special train for the Golden Jubilee Imperial Council Session in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. Over 100,000 fraternal brothers were expected to attend the sessions in LA.

Members of a Washington Afifi Shrine Temple practice their skit for the Golden Jubilee convention to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. Behind the scenes gathering of eight men in locker room, some in costume. Shriners from all over the state gathered to Tacoma to travel in a special 16 car train to the convention. It was estimated that over 100,000 people would be attending.

Shriners gather in Tacoma to board the special train to the Golden Jubilee 1938 Imperial Council Session to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9. A farm wagon carries eight men. Several other men wait for an opportunity to ride in the wagon which displays a sign "New Deal." Parades, events, stunts and hijinks will be an important part of the convention.

Shriners convention, the Afifi Shrine Golden Jubilee. The men pose in front of the Winthrop Hotel dressed in raincoats and wearing either 10 gallon hats or Russian appearing hats. A few appear tied up in ropes. Shriners from around the state assembled in Tacoma to board a special sixteen car train bound for the Golden Jubilee to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. In June of 1938, the Shriners descend on Tacoma before leaving for their Afifi Shrine Golden Jubilee,1888-1938, in Los Angeles. Shriners from Southwest and Central Washington, as well as Yakima, Wenatchee and Grays Harbor have gathered in Tacoma to board a special 16 car train to LA. The Shriners parade heads north on the 900 block of Broadway over streetcar tracks embedded in the pavement. The trolley car appears to be operating during the parade. (T. Times 6/3/1938, pg. 2)

A smiling Frank Freese, bartender at the Moose Club, prepares to donate a dollar bill to the March of Dimes' canine representative in January, 1953. The pedigreed Great Dane, Diane Katherine O' Donnell, has one paw on the bartender's hand as she focuses her attention on the dollar. There are two March of Dimes coin banks in the shape of iron lungs strapped on either side of the dog's body. She is accompanied by Police Chief Jack Elich. Diane was the official mascot of the Tacoma Police Department. The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis sponsored the March of Dimes campaign annually to raise funds for polio research and treatment. A Great Dane extends a paw to hotel personnel as she accompanies Police Chief Jack Elich during the 1953 March of Dimes campaign. Diane Katherine O'Donnell, a pedigreed Great Dane, has a March of Dimes coin bank strapped to her side for donations. The coin banks are in the shape of miniature iron lungs. Diane is the official mascot of the Tacoma Police Department. The March of Dimes was an annual fundraiser by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to provide the means for polio research and treatment. Sam Perkins celebrates his 73rd birthday with friends at the Tacoma Club. Mayor Smitley (far right) and another man sing happy birthday as he prepares to blow out the candles on his huge cake. Mr. Perkins was born in Boston on May 6, 1865 and was christened Sidney Albert Perkins. That moniker was soon shortened to "Sam." For his 73rd birthday, he was feted by some of the friends he made in over 50 years of business in Tacoma. Mr. Perkins was best known locally as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. (T. Sam Perkins, seated on the right, and three other men pose for a portrait to celebrate Perkin's 73rd birthday. The event was held at the Tacoma Club in the Washington Building. Mr. Perkins had a long and varied work history in Tacoma. Sam Perkins and W.P. Bonney were partners in a wholesale and retail drug business in the late 1880s- 1890s. They went out of business in the depression of the early 90's when customers dried up. Mr. Perkins became the secretary of Mark Hanna, chairman of the Republican election committee for William McKinley. After the election, Perkins stayed on with Hanna for a while. Mr. Perkins returned to Tacoma in the late 90's as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. His party at the Tacoma Club was attended by over 100 of his friends and business associates. (T.
