Gas range, Washington Gas and Electric Company, John Slott. This natural gas stove has six burners and possibly two ovens. It has a cover that is hinged in the middle to fold at the back of the burners when in use. John L. Slott was the district representative for Washington Gas & Electric in 1949.

Alma Ayres was the newest, most modern women clothing store in Tacoma. The store was owned by Alma Ayres, a well known and respected Tacoma business woman. This store would carry the most modern and exclusive fashions, including: "Carmel", "Frechtl", "Swansdown" and "Joe Kraeler". The Savage-Scofield Building, designed by Heath and Twichell architects in 1908, houses the Tacoma Hotel. The hotel's main building at 913 A Street was destroyed by a fire in 1935. Floral draperies line the walls and several small tables are set around the floor. A large jukebox is seen behind a woman on the right. Olympus Hotel was owned by Paul Sceva and managed by Virgil West. West had initiated the remodeling project just after he became manager, two years ago. The Frontier Room was accessible through the back entrance and through the main lobby; it was decorated like a 19th century inn, with amber glass and darkened wood rafters, historic murals of Washington State and could accommodate 100 people. Tacoma's Rudder Club was located at 735 Commerce Street in Tacoma's business district; the club manager was Walter Geehan. Throughout the year the Rudder Club hosted and sponsored many events, including dinners, luncheons and style shows for members and their family and guests. Wahlgren's had been in Tacoma since 1931 and expanded and remodeled their facilities in 1949. The exterior of the flower shop had new plate glass, capped with a marquee and blue vitrolite glass. The foundation had Roman brick and new window boxes (T.N.T., 9/2/49, p. A-8). TPL-10186

Banquet in Army-Navy Room for Buick Motor Company Distributors, Mueller-Harkins, Rudy Mueller. Buick dealers and salesmen of Southwest Washington previewed the new Buick Special at the Mueller-Harkins Motor Company. The Spar, located in the Antone Davis Building in Tacoma's Old Town neighborhood. The Spar was originally owned by George and James Radonich; the Radonich brothers also owned The Towers restaurant. The restaurant was first known as the Spar Restaurant and Spar Lunch Room, the name was changed to the Spar Tavern in the late 1930's or early 1940's. Jordan Baking Company was a wholesale bakery, located at 5233 South Washington Street in South Tacoma; this business was owned by Arthur K. and Elizabeth Jordan. View of Jordan's bread products, including: cracked wheat for 18 cents a loaf, wheat germ made with "Germ'ako" for 17 cents, raisin bread, and "Ol' Southern" corn bread for 18 cents a loaf.

In 1948, George A. Sample, Jr. took over management of the restaurant in the Rust Building. He changed the name to The Rathskeller, and over the next year, working with the Andrew's Fixture Company, completely remodeled the service area. This photograph from September 1949 shows five unidentified employees standing behind the newly installed counter. The Rathskeller was only in business until 1954, when it was replaced by Lindy's operated by G. Howard Lindholm.

Women attending the Northwest Florist Convention were treated to a hat show at the Top of the Ocean. Nearly 50 women pose outside the Top of the Ocean wearing hats decorated with flowers. All appear to be having a wonderful time on this sunny September day in 1949. The Top of the Ocean was destroyed by an arson fire April 3,1977.

Erection of and installed trusses at Washington Hardware Wholesale Building, Timber Fabrication Co., Pete Solberg. Large, solid wooden supporting timbers are being set into bases at the building site for Washington Hardware's new wholesale building. These timbers will support more trusses as work progresses on the building. The new warehouse would have 50,000 square feet one one floor.

Engines are taken from Ford cars and trucks, then replaced with a rebuilt engine by the Titus plant, payment is made with the trade in of the old engine and cash. Testing includes the engine being spun at over 800 r.p.m. while its operation, sound and oil pressure are carefully monitored. This service is available to individual owners, garages and Ford dealers.
