The Tacoma Times-Metropolitan Park District First Annual Bicycle Race Meet and Parade was held on August 5, 1938 at the Stadium Bowl. Three boys posed with their decorated bikes after the parade. The bicycle on the right is decorated with red, white and blue crepe paper bunting and sports several American flags. An Uncle Sam look-alike is the rider. The boy in the middle pays tribute to Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan with his "Corrigan's Special." In 1938, after many governmental refusals for a transatlantic flight permit, Corrigan set off to fly from New York to California in a fog and ended up in Ireland, supposedly due to a compass failure. The man who thumbed his nose at government officials became a national folk hero. The third bike has a sign "Quick Oats." Hundreds of children competed in the street parade and all-city meet. First Annual Bicycle Race Meet and Parade held August 5, 1938 at the Stadium Bowl. "Major Hoople" on "Leaping Lena" shaking hands with a boy on another decorated bike, most resembling a Daffodil Parade float. Major Amos B. Hoople was the cartoon star of the newspaper comic "Our Boarding House," created in 1921 by Gene Ahern. Hoople was a long winded stuffed shirt, usually identified by his overflowing midsection. The comic strip took place in Martha Hoople's boarding house and ran for six decades. The boys are tentatively identified as William Kennedy of 5318 So. Fife and Albert Dock of 5315 So. Junnett.

Children pose with their decorated bicycles at the Stadium Bowl, the terminus of the August 5, 1938 bicycle parade sponsored by the Tacoma Times and the Park Recreation Department of the Metropolitan Park District. Some of the more creative entries are a covered wagon and an airplane. The parade started at 2:30p.m. at 8th and Commerce, as hundreds of children wound through downtown streets and on to the Stadium Bowl to the cheering of thousands of proud parents. Prizes were given for the best decorated entries, funniest costumed rider, craziest looking bicycle and oldest bicycle. The top prizes were three 1939 Schwinn "World" bicycles with all the latest accessories- knee-action, motorcycle-type kick stand, rear vision mirrors and fore wheel brakes. (T. The 19th century melodrama "United by Love" was being presented on August 23, 1938, on a Works Progress Administration (WPA) travelling stage to an appreciative outdoor audience in South Park. The "Theater on Wheels," a joint enterprise of the WPA and the Metropolitan Parks Board, had presented five complete shows a week since June 13th, playing six times around a circuit of ten Tacoma parks and playgrounds. Members of the Asbury Methodist Church WPA-coached drama club on stage were, left to right, Ruth Bristow, Milo Ernst, Pat O'Conner, Georgia "George" Kisor and Cyril Hansen. More than 100 performers presented shows featuring music by the 6-piece professional WPA orchestra, singing, dancing, dramatic sketches and sound movies. They played to more than 20,000 appreciative theater goers in June and July with August audiences slightly higher. Their season ended on August 31st, retiring the only travelling theater on the Pacific Coast for the year. (T. Times 8/24/1938, pg. 16)

Western Washington Fair grandstand. During the 1938 Tacoma Day at the fair, 49,690 people walked through the gates. Fifteen thousand people packed the grandstand to the point of sitting on the concrete stairs for shows and races. (T. Times, 9/22/38, p. 1)

Fifteen hundred cheering horse race enthusiasts packed the grandstands at the 39th Western Washington Fair on September 21, 1938. There were six races held daily throughout the run of the Puyallup Fair. The 21st was Tacoma Day. By 1 p.m. over 20,000 fair goers had passed through the turnstiles. The official attendance tally for the day was 49,690.

The two birds are the winners at the 44th Annual All-Northwest Winter Poultry Show held the Henry Mohr Hardware building, 1141-43 Broadway. This is the first time racing pigeons have been shown. International flavor Military Reserve Officers Ball, sponsored by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association February 18, 1939 at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. Army, Navy and Marine officers from Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and nearby cities, as well as officers of the famed Seaforth Highlanders of British Columbia, dance with their partners under row of flags representing the two countries and their various regiments. International-style Military Ball held February 18, 1939 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop. Military officers and wives or guests converse under the guard of three men in uniform, perhaps the Color Guard. Elaborate wallcoverings in background. Over 500 persons attended the ball hosted by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association. The officers represented every military branch in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia and surrounding cities. Guests from Canada included 55 officers from the famed Seaforth Highlanders as well as the Irish Fusiliers and the British Columbia Hussars. The color guard was drawn from Ft. Reserve Officers International Military Ball held February 18, 1939 at the Hotel Winthrop's Crystal Ballroom. Major Harold E. Snider, of Vancouver, B.C., dressed in kilts, and wife as well as Mrs. Nelson Lynde and Colonel A. W. Melchoir, of the Tacoma Reserve Officers group, are shown arriving at Winthrop Hotel for the dance. The ball was to be attended by regular and reserve officers of all military branches in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia and surrounding cities, as well as select Canadian regiments.
