On January 5, 1951, three unidentified Tacoma Athletic Commission members posed with tennis stars (in white, left to right) Pancho Segura, Pauline Betz Addie, Gertrude "Gussie" Moran and Jack Kramer at the Bobby Riggs Professional Tennis Show held in the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. TAC and the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club cosponsored the two singles and the doubles match offered in the nationally touring show. The most exciting matches were those of Kramer, who was top of the amateur field, and Segura, the flashy Latin player from Ecuador with the two handed forehand and backhand returns. "Gorgeous Gussie" Moran, consistently rated in the top 10 of this country, was better known for her fashion statements such as her ruffled tennis undies. Addie, who had worn the national women's crown for four years, was also known as a sharp dresser and the two women consistently tried to out dress each other. A portion of the evenings returns were donated to the March of Dimes. (TNT 1/5/1951, pg. 15)

Gaily decorated box lunches for two are auctioned off at the annual old fashioned Box Lunch Social in the main lounge of the Student Union building at Pacific Lutheran College. The event where coeds prepare elaborately designed containers with meals to be purchased by and consumed with the highest collegiate bidder was sponsored by the Lutheran Students Association with proceeds going to charity.

Dr. Seth Eastvold, President of Pacific Lutheran College, and bronze dedication plaque hung mid February 1950 on the front exterior wall of the Student Union Building. The plaque cites the donors that made the construction of the building possible. The Student Union Building housed many of the students' activities and included such facilities as the main auditorium, organ practice rooms, college bookstore, general lounge, coffee shop and several offices. Dr. Eastvold's administration, 1943-1962, was characterized by capital expansion. (TNT 2-26-1950 A-10)

The library was designed by local Tacoma architect Emanuel J. Bresemann and was dedicated in 1939 and remodeled in the late forties. In the late forties and fifties, the College grew greatly, both in student body and in capital expansion. TPL-9329

In this photograph from October of 1949, an unidentified student kneels next to the bell that had hung in the bell tower at Lowell School, 1210 No. Yakima Ave., until the school was severely damaged by the earthquake of April 13, 1949. The school was condemned and demolished, and a new Lowell School was built at 810 North 13th Street (T.N.T., 10/15/49, p. 4).

In 1948 Fife's Schools, District # 88, occupied a large campus of buildings on 20th Street East just east of 55th Avenue East. The four major buildings in the complex had been built over a period of 22 years. From left to right are: Fife High School, built in 1930; the Fife Civic Auditorium built in 1924, which served as both a public gathering place and the school gymnasium; the old Fife school, which was built in 1914 and by 1948 was being used for vocational training; and (at the far right) the new Fife Elementary School, which was built in 1936. In 1949 the Fife School District built a new high school, dedicated in 1950.

Layout on Beaux Arts Ball, Times, Mrs. MacDonald. Students at the College of Puget Sound enjoyed a masquerade ball given in honor of forieign students by Alpha Rho Tau, the art honorary. The event was described as spectacular. A young man wearing a cardboard cage is lying on a table while another student wearing a doctor's stethoscope evaluates his condition. Four couples are seen square dancing in Jason Lee Junior High School's gym in February of 1949. Beginning at left and working around the wheel are: Sandra Burrows and Jay Grimstead, Sara Lovell and Bob Lang, Pat Holmes and Billy Redfield, and Shirley Boyle and Fred Thomas. They were dancing to the music of Bob Hager's records. Folk dancing gained wider interest among Tacoma's schools during the late 1940's. Tacoma Vocational School, Times, George Prescott. Two students are at work in a mechanics workshop with their instructor. Tacoma Vocational School provided classes in diesel motor repair, boat building , electrical and cosmetology. Certificates were awarded in Day Trades, Trade Extension and Apprentice Extension. CPS Homecoming Parade, Times, buzz. The College of Puget Sound Homecoming Parade was held November 6, 1948, from Union Station up Pacific Avenue and Stadium Way to Stadium Bowl before the Homecoming football game. Prizes were awarded to the fraternity that entered the oldest car and to the fraternity with the best decorated float. Individual prizes were given to best clown or pair of clowns. The sign hanging on the side of the truck on loan from Griffin Fuel Company shown here says, "I may be old but I'm here with bells" . The building that can be seen in the background is at 1754 Pacific Ave. It is now part of the University of Washington Tacoma campus. (T.Times, 11/5/1948, p.1) TPL-8690

Tacoma Public Schools employs 42 cooks, kitchen helpers, a coordinator and heavily relies on student help for their school meals. The school district is equally concerned about well balanced nutritional meals and making sure the food tastes good, the meals are intended to promote good health and growth. Lakewood was one of the fastest growing communities in Western Washington. This area first began as a summer home area, then later was known as Tacoma's "Lakes District"; it is now a strong community that stands on its own. Annie Wright Seminary was having their annual candlelight Christmas carol services, Christmas festivities would follow. This was an event that all grade levels at AWS participated in. ca. 1947. Construction photograph of Pacific Lutheran College's Memorial Gymnasium, ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. The gymnasium was dedicated in December of 1947 and built from a design by Lea, Pearson & Richards, architects. A new gymnasium had been planned as early as 1944, and postponed by the war. A fire of unknown origin razed the old gym in 1946 and brought new urgency to the construction of the new gymnasium. The new building was a part of the move toward capital expansion, headed up by College president Dr. Seth Eastvold, president from 1943-1962.

The students at Hawthorne Grade School presented a musical at the PTA meeting. The springtime program was directed by Gilda Holgerson. The festivities included most of the students at Hawthorne and featured an Easter parade, crowning of a festival queen and many chorus numbers. College of Puget Sound, ordered by Dr. Thompson. Dr. Edward H. Todd sits at a desk writing. He was president emeritus of the college at this time. Dr. Todd served as president of the college for 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. Prior to becoming associated with educational work of the Methodist Church, Dr. Todd was a minister of that denomination for 19 years. The men's dormitory was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948. (T.Times, 6i/8/1942)

Mrs. Mae Needham demonstrated the proper technique for welding steel for her unidentified instructor at Clover Park High School while Mrs. Margaret Needham (center) and Mrs. DesCamp watched on January 27, 1943. With the war came a new demand for skilled tradesmen - both men and women. The school had provided vocational training for nearly 1000 men and was starting classes for women beginning with electric and acetylene welding. A new series of classes soon followed to train women for jobs as automobile mechanics at the Mt. Rainier Ordinance Depot, Fort Lewis. (T. Times 2/5/1943, p. 3 & 2/25/1943 p.33 photo).
