Laying of Cornerstone at Pacific Lutheran College. Ceremonies were held to lay the cornerstone June 10, 1947, at Pacific Lutheran College for a new, three-story student union building. Dr. C.S. Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. The building was named after Dr. Edward H. Todd, president of the college 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. (T.Times, 5/28/1947, p.7)

Pacific Lutheran College faculty committee for social activities was organizing a formal reception to welcome new and returning students. On October 16, 1947 College of Puget Sound officials and West Disinfecting Company representatives inspected the newly refinished gym floor in the CPS Gymnasium which had originally been built in 1924. The floor had been re-done and coated with "lastincote" for durability. Left to right, A. R. Emerson, W. R. Palling, Gerard Banks, W. E. Patrick, Alice C. Bond and John Heinrick. The CPS gymnasium was now ready for indoor sports to begin.

Pacific Lutheran College was first known as Pacific Lutheran Academy between 1898 and 1919, in 1920 they changed Academy to College. In 1944 PLC officially stated they intended to build a new gymnasium, but building was delayed until the end of World War II. Pacific Lutheran College was formally founded in 1891, when the first cornerstone was laid. The school was well established within a few years, and after World War II enrollment dramatically increased and the school grounds expanded. Lea, Pearson and Richards were the architects that designed PLC's Memorial Gymnasium. The dedication ceremonies were planned for December of this year. Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was designed by architects, Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and Mock & Morrison. The ground breaking ceremony was held in July 1946. The cornerstone was laid by Dr. Edward H. Todd, CPS's previous president, the building was named in his honor for his many years of service to the institution. Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was named after Dr. Edward H. Todd, in honor of his many years of service to the school. Dr. Seth Eastvold (right), president of Pacific Lutheran College, along with his wife Enga and Board of Trustees chairman Dr. H.L. The building dedication ceremony will include many guest speakers and a performance by PLC's famous "Choir of the West." PLC had also recently dedicated their new student union building. The impressive new Science Hall at Pacific Lutheran College was in full operation, classes from the natural sciences department were being taught and departmental offices were relocated into the new building. The new Pacific Lutheran College Memorial Gymnasium was dedicated at the first basketball home game of the season. The new gym has a sound proof radio booth, electric scoreboard, portable bleachers, classrooms, laundry facilities and a trophy ornament area. Pacific Lutheran College's new Memorial Gymnasium had recently been dedicated and the first basketball game had been played here. Pacific Lutheran's new gymnasium was used by the women's and men's basketball teams. The gymnasium was one of the most modern gyms of its type, and one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. This aerial view of the Pacific Lutheran College campus and grounds was taken in January of 1948. Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. In February of 1948, the alumni reunion planning committee sipped coffee as they discussed the upcoming annual Pacific Lutheran College reunion scheduled for February 7-8th at the Parkland campus. Pictured graduates were, L-R, Lorene Wilson, Marjorie Wentworth, Stella Jacobs, Alice Ford and Wilma Schmitz. Activities for the two-day get-together included a smorgasbord banquet, a basketball game between the PLC reserves and the Alumni All-Stars, and a mixer featuring home movies of the Alumni's college days. Students (all men) work in a science lab with microscopes, slides, rocks, test tubes and small bottles of different solutions. A motar and pestle sits on the table for students to use to grind materials with which they want to experiment further. Jars of labeled materials sit on shelves around the room and gas lines are also seen against the wall to provide flame for certain kinds of experiments.

Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. As of May 1948, ceramics would be featured in the annual student art exhibit. (T.Times, 5/15/1948, p.5)

ca. 1948. Christie Walker points out a "favorite" child among a photograph of French orphans to interested donors; Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California executive, stands at her side. C.P.S. students opened their hearts - and wallets - in support of French orphan boys. The student body decided by ballot to "adopt" the De Bon Secours French orphanage for the rest of the winter (February-May,1948) and signed pledges totaling approximately $1000. The money raised would be sent to C.A.R.E. and the organization would send food and clothing packages. It cost about $29 to support one child per month. The orphanage was in debt due to France's post-war situation and money raised would help the orphanage through the winter months before spring crops and before Marshall Plan aid started. De Bon Secours housed 35 boys between the ages of 4-14. Their parents had either been killed during the war or sent to German concentration camps. The drive to collect funds, sponsored by the International Relations Club, began the first week of February, 1948. By February 6, the campaign neared the $1000 in pledges redeemed and a check was turned over to Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California assistant manager, who handled the C.A.R.E. gifts.
