A Pennsalt guide explains to interested visitors how caustic-chlorine is created during Pennsalt's 100th anniversary open house. Despite its name, Pennsalt does not produce ordinary table salt. It does, however, produce caustic and chlorine from coarse gray California salt for pulp mills. Brine flows into cylinders and caustic soda drains off at the bottom with chlorine gas emerging from the top. These chemical products are then shipped back to California by tanker for a profit. A large display of drawings was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company of Washington's open house held at its tideflats plant on August 8, 1950. The display commemorates the 100th anniversary of the firm's parent company, Pennsalt, and shows a series of illustrations regarding its history.

Members of the board of directors of the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads enjoy a water excursion on July 13, 1950. The seated man in the middle with hat on appears to be engrossed in some delightful reading material. Next to him wearing a bright tie is the president of the Milwaukee Road, C.H. Buford. Henry Foss, whose vessel transported the directors, stands directly behind Mr. Buford. In addition, the board was present at a luncheon at the Hotel Winthrop the same day.

On July 13, 1950, Agnes Foss confidently prepared to grasp the large steering wheel on board a vessel, probably one of the Foss family tugs. Assisting her was her husband Henry Foss, right. C.H. Buford, cap in hand, gazed upon the wheel and smiled. The Fosses were giving Mr. Buford, president of the Milwaukee Road, a ride quite different from that which passengers on his railroad would receive. Mr. Buford and other railroad heads were on a centennial inspection tour and had stopped in Tacoma. They had lunched at the Winthrop Hotel where criticism of government control of railroads and approval of Korean war action were topics discussed. Barthel Chemical Construction Company was the first rubber vulcanizing plant in the Pacific Northwest. The plant was constructed on the Port of Tacoma "Quadrangle" in 1950. The firm covered equipment of all types and description in the west. The vulcanizing plant was the largest north of Los Angeles. Workmen are seen here working on storage tanks. Dexter's Machine at St. Regis Paper Company. During 1950 the pulp mill at Tacoma was expanded. St. Regis made kraft paper at six mills with a combined capacity of approximately 360,000 tons a year. Ordered by Bird Machine Company, South Walpole, Massachusetts, Mr. V. Fahlgren.

The first meeting of the Tacoma Smelter's 25 Year Club at the Towers. During the meeting, Chairman Earl Marble, Manager of the plant, who was instrumental in forming the club turned over its chairmanship to Eugene A. White, retired manager of the Smelter. All Club members had 25 plus years of service with the plant.

Superphosphate is a soluble mixture of phosphates used as fertilizer and is made from insoluble mineral phosphates by treatment with sulfuric acid.

Ten unidentified employees of ASARCO who attended the first meeting of the Tacoma Smelter's 25 Year Club held at the Towers, 6805 6th Ave. on April 10, 1950. The club originated with 185-207 members, all active or retired employees of the Smelter with 25 or more years of service with the company. The chairmanship was passed down at the first meeting from Earl Marble, the manager of the plant who was instrumental in setting up the group, to retired plant manager Eugene A. White..

Opening of Stauffer Chemical Company. A workman is dwarfed by the huge piles of raw materials and a crane for moving the materials. The Tacoma plant made superphosphate using phosphate rock from its Leef, Wyoming, location and sulphuric acid from the Tacoma Smelter. Opening of Stauffer Chemical Company in Tacoma. A workman standing on a pile of phosphate rock directs another workman in moving the overhead crane. Various fertilizers made at the Tacoma branch were stored for curing and moved by the large clamshell to the milling units during shipping seasons. Both bulk and bagged material moved out during spring and fall seasons to farmers and mixers throughout the state of Washington and Oregon via truck and rail. Stauffer Chemical manufactured Captan fungicide, Vapam soil sterilant, herbicide and insecticide formulations, aluminum sulphate, titanium tetrachloride and pelleted mixed fertilizers. Opening of Stauffer Chemical Company. Dignitaries attending the opening of the Tacoma plant were given an opportunity to view the bag filling operations. Once a bag was filled at an upper level it was sewn shut and delivered to workers via a conveyor system. Bags were stacked on pallets and several bags are seen stacked against the far wall. Progress photograph of steelwork at St. Regis Paper Company. The new multiwall bag plant, adjoining the paper mill, was to replace a leased plant at Seattle. Frozen food lockers were manufactured by St. Paul and Tacoma Lumber Company at Coast Sash and Door Company using plaster-faced plywood. A workman inspects the fit of the door in its sash. Progress photograph at the Narrows Bridge construction site showing prefab of plywood forms. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was the third longest suspension span in the world at the time it was built. Both towers of the bridge are seen in the background. Until the full weight of the deck was in place the tops of the two towers leaned about 3 feet toward the shore. Cape Beverly was built by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding for Capt. Paul Lynn. She was designed by Arthur DeFever of San Pedro and carried excellent equipment: a 615 hp Superior engine, twin 150 hp GM auxiliaries, a Sperry magnetic compas pilot with Sperry electro-magnetic steering system, a Submarine Signal Co.
