ca. 1943. Built in 1924, the Henry Mill & Timber Company occupied the site on Ruston Way just south of North Starr St. for almost 20 years. Originally a sawmill, they started fabricating structures when they built the caisson panels for the first Narrows Bridge. Their expertise in designing and building prefabricated structures from heavy timber won them contracts during WWII for giant store houses and hangers that could be broken down into small sections, shipped, and re-assembled with a minimum of effort. After the war they were taken over by the Tacoma Lumber Fabricating Co. which closed in the early 1950s.

This building at the northeast corner of North 26th Street and Proctor was occupied by a number of different business between 1916 when it was built and 1963 when it was replaced with the building that currently stands on that corner. In 1943, when this photograph was taken, it was home to North End Builders' Supply operated by Edwin L. Coy. Mr. Coy was a Baptist minister who served as the pastor in nine area churches during his ministerial career. Because many of the churches in which he served were financially troubled, the reverend took other jobs to support his family. Besides running this north end hardware store, he was employed over the years as a carpenter, a furniture salesman, a butcher and a conductor on a narrow-gauge railroad.

In August of 1943, the new Antlers Tavern, owned by Jeo E. Andreo, opened at 1142 Pacific Avenue. The original Antlers Tavern, located at the intersection of the Mountain highway and the county highway road, was destroyed by fire on February 4, 1943. The 60 foot long bar in the new tavern was one of the longest in the city. Several mounted deer's heads are hung on the wall above the back of the bar. The man standing at the right behind the bar is believed to be Joe Andreo.(T.Times, 8/9/1943, p.9)

Bank of Washington Plaza with no visible exterior signage. Sunlight reflects off the multitude of bronze windows in the new Bank of Washington Plaza at 12th & Pacific. An unusual part of the building complex is the large fountain accessible by curving stairs beneath the level of the actual tower. Seven trees are planted in the concrete surrounding the fountain space. The 24-story Bank of Washington Plaza was dedicated on January 9, 1971.

Baumann fireplace. Beautiful wooden mantel with architectural details: dentil, applied decoration, and cove moldings. The surround and hearth are stone tile. The living room shows electric light sconces, chairs, curtains, and fireplace utensils. Vases with roses, family photographs and a small figurine decorate the top of the mantel.

Battery "D," 148th Field Artillery, Washington National Guard encampment "Camp Hoffman," in June of 1932. Guardsmen are posed with a piece of artillery labeled "Donut Dunker." Members of the 148th Field Artillery from Tacoma, 146th Field Artillery from Seattle, 161st Infantry from Spokane plus flying, ambulance, cavalry and tank units amassed at Camp Murray from June 16-30, 1932, for the annual field training. Each year the encampment was named after a different individual; in 1932 it was the "Camp Edward D. Hoffman," in honor of the Tacoma flier who died in service in the mountains of California a few months before. Col. Carlos Pennington was in command of the 148th F.A. ca. 1926. Wenatchee Apple display in window at Great Northern Railroad ticket office, located at Transportation Row. (alternate address 112-18 So. 9th St.) Placards in the window offer the information that "over 15,000 car loads of apples are shipped annually over the Great Northern Railway" and that "National Apple Week" is "October 31 through November 7th." The sign board below the "Tickets" neon sign has pictures of Paramount stars Jack Holt and Billie Dove eating Wenatchee apples while in the Cascades filming "Ancient Highway." (filed with Argentum)
