In March of 1926, Stadium High School initiated its own branch of the national "Longfellows" Club. Members had to measure in at over six feet in height to join. The new club attracted a group of approximately 50 young men who posed in front of Stadium High School at 111 North "E" Street. (WSHS; A-1488 same photo without lettering)

In March of 1937, the Stadium High School orchestra was tuning up and practicing for the upcoming premier of the original opera "Masquerade," written by their instructor Clayton Johnson, shown here conducting. Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of Puget Sound and after further studies, returned to Tacoma to take the post of Director of Music at Stadium High School. He held that position for 30 years, counting among his students Janis Paige, star of stage and screen, and Metropolitan Opera performers Roald Reitan and Hugh Thompson. "Masquerade" was one of two operas Mr. Johnson wrote during his tenure at Stadium. He died in June of 1982 at the age of 83. (T. Times, 04-01-1937, p.1; TNT 06-21-1982, pg. C-12)

A message board lends an air of modernity which contrasts with the French chateau architecture of Stadium High School. It stands as a reminder that this beautiful building, placed on the city, state, and national registries, is being utilized as a high school by the Tacoma School District. This photograph of the front of Stadium High School was taken in January of 1958 for the Mark Mitchell Roofing Company which was located at 662 East 11th Street. Built in the "Chateauesque" style used for the Canadian Pacific Railroad's resort hotels, with steeply-pitched hipped roofs, cone-shaped towers, turrets and pointed spires Stadium H.S. posed special problems for roofers. A view of the front entry of Stadium High School. Originally built in 1891 as a hotel, the building was never completed and was converted to a high school in 1905. The school opened September 10, 1906, as Tacoma High School, and was renamed in 1913 as Stadium High School. It was designed by architect A.B. Hewitt in the French chateau style. Frederick Heath served as architect for remodeling as a high school. Towers topped with spires add decorative appeal to the exterior of the building. The steep roof has several dormers in it providing light the the upper rooms. Buildings, churches, schools, and parks made for special edition of Times, studio. TPL-1908.

A Red Cross worker is pictured above flanked by eight women "soldiers" in tall hats, all with index fingers pointing upward. They were participating in the opera Mam'zelle Taps which was performed on stage at Stadium High School March 5-7, 1925, by members of the school's boys' and girls' glee clubs. It was the 13th annual musical production. Although the opera was set during wartime, it was played on a humorous note with the required happy ending. (1925 Tahoma, p. 66-67-articles)

These seven Stadium High School girls exhibit the latest fashions of the day upon their return to school in September of 1935. Long, ankle-length skirts were back in style. Members of the Citizens Advisory Committee inspect school classrooms on August 30, 1954. Mrs. A.A. Price is observed opening a small drawer in a large dilapidated work table while Mrs. Gordon Hartwick, of the League of Women Voters, looks on. William Rave of the Carpenters Union leans over a cracked and dirty fish tank. Peeling paint and dirt are clearly visible on the walls and shelves. This classroom has been identified as a fourth floor classroom in Stadium High School, probably Room 424 in the southwest tower. The Citizens Advisory Committee, representing 175 civic and service organizations, toured three northend schools and presented their findings to the Tacoma School Board. They advised replacement of Grant and Stadium schools and praised Sherman school for its modern facilities. (TNT 9-1-54, B-7)

1967 Richards stock file. The Stadium High School band forms their school initials accompanied by a drum major, majorettes and cheerleaders, during a photo shoot at Stadium Bowl in the fall of 1967. The school had a statewide reputation for producing fine musicians. Directed by Jack Lloyd, the band would participate in the Santa Claus and Daffodil Parades in addition to marching in the Turkey Day game. The Stadium High School Reserve Swim Team of 1949 created quite a record for themselves. Led by Coach "Cam" Haslam (far rt., back row), a former Tiger swimmer, they won eight straight meets. The Stadium High School wrestling team, the 1941 City prep champions, avidly watched on March 17, 1941 as Bill Bodenhammer (top) and Don Ferris engage each other in a demonstration lock. Other team members are, front row, Gene Pape (coach), Arnie Hansen, Chuck Issacs, Lee Merz, Dennis Livingston, Kiromi Kikuchi, John Collins, Phil Rogers. Back row: George Miller (manager), Herb Mims, Kenny Johnson, Kiyoshi Kinoshita, Jim Cadigan, Sid Lay, Harry Gust, Fred Hoffman, Jim Colito, Tidashi Horiki (manager) and Sam Higuchi. Stadium took the city title, and the giant Cammarano Brothers trophy that went with it by winning five of their eight scheduled matches. Stadium High School Student Council. Elected members of Stadium High School's Student Council posed in front of the school on January 19, 1925. The energetic council put forth many improvements during the school year, including organization of the Sophomore Class, planning for the annual Night Shirt Parade, funding matinee dances, and painting and repairing projects including fixing the drainage system on the corner of North 1st and Tacoma Avenue. The Tahoma, school annual, noted that the council's greatest accomplishment may have been the establishment of an Honor Society. President of the Student Council was junior class president, Joseph Griggs. Mr. Griggs is believed to be in the second row, extreme left. TPL-6720; G47.1-029 (1925 Tahoma, p. 143-44)

Stadium High School 1939 Basketball Team. The team, under the direction of Coach V.G. Lowman, was on top of the Tacoma prep standings. Considered short for a basketball team, they made up for their lack of altitude with sheer attitude. The fighting Tigers, in at least six of their games, came from far behind to win. Team members are, front row left to right, Art DeMaris, Matt Kapovich, Bob Loftness, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich and Russ Soper. Back row, Dick Donelson, Dave Livingston, Dave Doud, Coach Lowman, Fred Angus, Warren Harvey and George Warfer. In March of 1940, Stadium High School presented their 28th annual opera "Desert Song." The 200 students in the cast rehearsed three months to perform the light opera March 28-30. The lead was played by Donna Mae Jaden, who later achieved fame as musical and film star Janis Paige. Stadium High School was built in 1891, it was built in the French Chateau style and originally designed by architect A. B. Hewitt, architect Frederick Heath remodeled the building and changed it into the school. Stadium Bowl was built in 1909, it has been remodeled many times because of mudslides and weather damage. The cast of the Stadium High School opera, the "Sultan of Sulu," on stage. The opera, an annual presentation at Stadium High School, was the largest and according to the school yearbook "Tahoma," the "most important musical event of the year." In 1924, the musical comedy production of the "Sultan of Sulu" ran three nights from March 13-15, in order to accommodate the always large crowds. Although there was officially no leading role, good notices were received by Kearney Walton who played Kiram the Sultan and foreshadowing later roles in Hollywood, Herman Brix as Col. Jefferson Budd. After graduation, Herman Brix would become an Olympian and actor, later known as Bruce Bennett. (1924 Tahoma, p. 164-67) G64.1-073
