ca. 1952. The cornerstone was laid in February, 1924, for Jones Hall on the College of Puget Sound campus. The building was designed by architects Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, who later designed several other campus structures. View of ivy-covered Jones Hall showing exterior and main entrance, the first building constructed on the college's North 15th and Warner site. The campus was opened in September, 1924. Informal shoveling contest during October, 1940, ground breaking at C.P.S.for new Student Union Building. Mayor Harry Cain, in hat and cigarette in mouth, squats at right center. Norton Clapp is to Cain's left in photo. Norton Clapp served as a trustee of the college (later University) for 62 years, 19 of those as chairman of the board of trustees. Students and invited guests chortle at the sight of the unannounced shoveling contest pitting Bishop Bruce Baxter of Willamette University, C.P.S. president Edward H. Todd, Board of Trustees president E.L. Blaine and trustee Albert H. Hooker, Jr., on October 16, 1940. The contest was diplomatically declared a draw. Trustee Hooker was disqualified because his first shovelful of dirt fell on Dr. Todd's neck. Norton Clapp would go on to win the actual 4-man shoveling contest, besting Mayor Cain, the student body president and Chamber of Commerce president. Ground breaking ceremonies at C.P.S. for new Student Union Building. A group of coeds with shovels take their turn during Homecoming Week in October, 1940. The Student Union Building was the first of three building projects totaling $300,000 which had been recently approved by the Board of Trustees. The school's population was growing and new structures needed to be built to accommodate the students.

On September 30, 1941, before moving into the College of Puget Sound's new Student Union building, representatives of the campus sororities meet to draw lots for room assignments. Lord Halifax, British Ambassador to the United States received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the College of Puget Sound (now UPS) on July 22, 1943. The degree was conferred by fellow Oxford alumnus and president of the college, Dr. R. Franklin Thompson (L) . Participating in the ceremony were Dean John D. Regester (R) and State Supreme Court Justice William J. Millard who is attaching the academic hood. Lord Halifax had a Doctorate in Science from the University of Glasgow and a Master of Arts from Cambridge. He had tutored and lectured at Cambridge before becoming a member of Parliament. Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, the 3rd Viscount of Halifax, was the British ambassador to the United States from 1940-1946. He was created an earl in 1944. His many offices and honors included viceroy of India, Knight of the Order of the Garter,privy councillor, secretary of war and foreign secretary. (T.Times, 6-30-43, p. 18, T. An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. Franklin Thompson into the student body. They would pass the color post again upon graduation. (T.Times, 10/10/1946, p.5)

College of Puget Sound's orchestra was first called the Puget Sound Symphony, then later changed their name to the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. Raymond Vaught was the conductor, Clyde Keutzer was the head of the music department at CPS. Aside from the orchestra CPS music department had the Adelphian Choir and the Women's Chorus. R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

On a sunny day in May, 1947, Louise Kepper, a senior at the College of Puget Sound, stops to admire the "Kissing Posts" taken from the campus of Pacific Lutheran University by students of the College of Puget Sound. The CPS students set the posts, engraved with initials on every surface, in cement. CPS students were posted to guard their color posts from possible PLC "raiders". (T.Times, 5/5/1947, p.14)

College of Puget Sound graduation. The College of Puget Sound held their 59th commencement exercises at Jones Hall, May 26, 1947. Two honorary degrees were given this year. The Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon William Bowman who was recently named superintendent of the Vancouver area of the Methodist Church. The Doctor of Human Letters was conferred upon Charles A. College of Puget Sound's Junior Varsity football team was coached by Don Dahlquist (first row, right). In college, Dahlquist had been a star tackle for Utah State. The Junior Varsity football team was made up of forty athletes, mostly freshmen. Their season ended with three wins and three defeats, their biggest wins were against the City Firemen, 24 to 0, and Fort Lewis All Stars, 21 to 0 (Names appear in 1948 Tamanawas).

Lynn Wentworth (center) was an Assistant Professor of Art at College of Puget Sound. Prof. Wentworth is helping a student, wearing a CPS student smock) with a vase, an unidentified woman stand to her left. Lynn Wentworth was the head of the art department and helped institute the art facilities expansion program at CPS, moving the department into the third floor attic of Jones Hall, which gave them more space.

Delta Alpha Gamma alumnae formed a committee to plan the annual Christmas tea. Over 200 alumnae and 50 active members of College of Puget Sound's sorority have been invited to attend. In December of 1947, the College of Puget Sound was selling canned milk on campus. The milk bought by students, faculty and staff would be sent to war ravaged Europe as a Christmas gift. At the milk stand, an unidentified student was selling milk to CPS President R. Franklin Thompson with other students waiting in line, cash in hand. CPS had also adopted an orphanage, De Bon-Secours, in Paris and they would be sending CARE gift packages worth $875 to the children for the holidays. (Tamanawas, 1948).

The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors.
