This faded sepia photograph is one taken of a luncheon held in honor of Anna Roosevelt Boettiger at the Hotel Winthrop in May, 1937. Mrs. Boettiger was the wife of Seattle Times publisher John Boettiger and the daughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She is seated in the center next to the microphone, wearing a small striped dark hat and suit of "Eleanor Blue" with large corsage of roses and lilies. She is gazing downward at small notes in her hand in preparation for her speech to the Junior Women's Club. Seated next to Mrs. Boettiger is Sally Sicade, general chairman and toastmistress of the club. Anna Roosevelt Boettiger, only daughter of President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, admires a large bouquet of sweetpeas and snapdragons she received from Mr. C.H. Schartow during a Junior Women's Club luncheon in her honor at the Hotel Winthrop on May 18, 1937. Mr. Schartow, then Executive Secretary to Mayor George A. Smitley, relayed a message of greetings from Mayor Smitley and the City of Tacoma. Mrs. Boettiger addressed the 300 women present and spoke highly of the Northwest, relating interesting incidents of her mother's recent trip to Seattle. Charter No. 10 of the Hotel Greeters and auxiliary and guests enjoyed a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel on October 28, 1936. Well-known hotel managers A.C.C. Gamer, L.L. Ex-Mayor J. J. Kaufman, 1941 President of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, receives a framed check and an alarm clock as his term expires during the 57th annual dinner meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on December 29, 1941, held at the Hotel Winthrop. Mayor Harry Cain (not pictured) earlier had presented the alarm clock to Mr. Kaufman because the chamber president had slept through one of chamber manager Thad Stevenson's sales talks in a steamship company's San Francisco office. On June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners descended on Tacoma for a spring reunion hosted by Tacoma's Afifi Temple. One of the first things that they did was organize a parade. Seven Shriners, including four flag bearers, gather in front of the Winthrop Hotel to wait for the parade to begin. A Shriners marching band is behind them.

In 1922, a group of concerned citizens got together to raise funds and make plans for a grand hotel for Tacoma. The Winthrop was built at a cost of over two million dollars and had its Grand Opening on May 16, 1925. Members of the Western Retail Lumbermens' Association pose in February of 1927 in front of a little bungalow erected on the roof of the Winthrop Hotel in honor of the group's annual convention. The bungalow was made entirely of local wood and demonstrated its use in construction. When the 24th annual convention concluded February 26, 1927, new leaders had been elected for the coming year. International flavor Military Reserve Officers Ball, sponsored by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association February 18, 1939 at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. Army, Navy and Marine officers from Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and nearby cities, as well as officers of the famed Seaforth Highlanders of British Columbia, dance with their partners under row of flags representing the two countries and their various regiments. Over 500 persons were expected to attend the dance. Canada was represented by officers of the Irish Fusiliers and British Columbia Hussars, as well as the Highlanders in their bright plaids. (T. International-style Military Ball held February 18, 1939 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop. Military officers and wives or guests converse under the guard of three men in uniform, perhaps the Color Guard. Elaborate wallcoverings in background. Over 500 persons attended the ball hosted by the Tacoma chapter of the Reserve Officers Association. The officers represented every military branch in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia and surrounding cities. Guests from Canada included 55 officers from the famed Seaforth Highlanders as well as the Irish Fusiliers and the British Columbia Hussars. The color guard was drawn from Ft. November, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance at the Hotel Winthrop. Merritt Nelson, Florence McLean, Betty Noble, and Weymar Rosso converse during intermission. On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times Spring Fashion section hit the newstands, featuring two couples modeling the latest in suits and coats from Klopfenstein's, Inc. Gathered around the piano at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit and Irene Tollefson, also in Rothmoor. Pictured left to right at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks, of Dallas Texas, in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit, Irene Tollefson in Rothmoor and Vic Vine in Hart Schaffner. Last Man Club, American Legion, November 30, 1946. Eighteen men stand behind six empty chairs draped with American flags during their annual meeting held at the Hotel Winthrop. The Last Man Club was formed by World War I veterans who were also past Commanders of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion in December of 1938. A bottle of 1917 cognac was reserved for the sole survivor to drink a toast to his fallen fellow members.

300 delegates from the dairy industry met for three days starting November 13, 1946, in Tacoma at the Hotel Winthrop. This was the 7th annual joint convention of the Washington State Milk Dealers Association, the Washington State Ice Cream Manufacturers Association, and the Washington Creamery Operators' Association. Delegates were expected from Washington, California, Oregon, Idaho, and Canada. Although there were many serious presentations on current dairy problems, at least one speaker attempted to entertain as well as educate his audience. Larry Livingston, from the duPont Chemical C., demonstrated some of the newest products from the wonder world of plastics. Among the wonders that he showed were crystal clear slippers made from lucite, and nylon dishes that "won't breat when you throw them at your wife." (T.Times, 11/14/1946, p.14)

Milton E. Gaetz (right) has been appointed President of the new Tacoma Charter of Optimist International, he is being presented with a diamond studded Optimist emblem. An unidentified bellman receives a room key from one of the employees working behind the front desk of the Hotel Winthrop in fall of 1947. In October of that year the hotel entered into a long term lease with Western Hotels Inc. The president of the Winthrop Hotel Company, E. J. Calloway, announced that Edward E. Carlson, Vice-President of Western Hotels and a native Tacoma, was to become the new general manager of the hotel, effective immediately. The Hotel Winthrop opened in May of 1925; it was converted into apartments for senior housing in 1973. On June 5, 1944, the War Stamp Minute Maids made an unannounced appearance at the Young Mens' Business Club luncheon to sell war bonds and stamps. They made a pleasing sight with their "V" for Victory halo hats and red, white and blue stamp boxes. The pictured men stepped forward to buy a $100 War Bond each. Pictured, left to right, purchasing their bond are George Neumeyer, Gil Gunderson, Leonard Peck, Jim Lasher and Gese Nist. Heading up the sale for the Maids are, left to right, Jean Hallen, Shirley Abel, Merrille Longstreth, Marilyn McCormack and Patty Doe. The maids were raising funds for the 5th War Loan Campaign. (T. Morris Jaffe-Edith Brodsky held their wedding and wedding reception at the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop on November 3, 1946. Eleven waitresses, a chef and kitchen manager stand behind the heavily laden banquet serving table. The bride was the daughter of Phillip and Anne Brodsky.
