Patients from the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic at St. Joseph's Hospital were the honored guests at a most unique Christmas party held December 17, 1953 at the Earle Hotel. They were the recipients of gifts made by an absent host. The gifts were made by inmates in the federal penitentiary on McNeil Island. The 18 inmates, members of the Bull-Bow Chapter of the Dale Carnegie Club, collected funds, bought materials and crafted purses, picture frames, jewel boxes, billfolds and card cases for the 60 men and women registered at the clinic. Three men and two women stand around a Christmas tree heavily hung with tinsel. One woman holds a painting of three Christmas candles. The other couple holds a sign stating that Hobby Shop gifts were made for the McNeil Island Dale Carnegie Multiple Sclerosis program, Christmas 1953. The event is a Christmas party sponsored by the members of the Bull-Bow chapter of the Dale Carnegie Club of the McNeil Island federal penitentiary for the patients from the MS Clinic started by the late Dr. Hinton D. Jonez at St Joseph's Hospital. The 18 active members of the club, not affiliated with the international organization due to members incarceration but students of the club study, arranged the party through Mrs. Grace Brown of the Tacoma Totem Chapter of the Dale Carnegie Club. The Bull-Bow members collected their own funds, bought materials and made all gifts by hand. The gifts were then gaily wrapped by Tacoma members who also served refreshments and arranged entertainment for the party. The McNeil Island group was named in honor of prison supervisor of education David Bowman, who encouraged the men to better themselves. The prison group was involved in charity activities throughout the year. (TNT 12/20/1953, pg. A-14)

A special demonstration of Marcelle hypo-allergenic cosmetics, sponsored by Savon Drugs, was conducted by William Comer in the lobby of the Earle Hotel in July, 1951. The event was attended by Multiple Sclerosis patients, both men and women, many of whom were in wheelchairs. Mr. Comer is presumably the gentleman in the center of the photograph, standing next to the woman in the wheelchair with her head cradled in a pillow. He is apparently holding one of Marcelle's products; various signs proclaim that doctor-recommended Marcelle creates cosmetics for sensitive skin.

A large group of Multiple Sclerosis patients and their guests gathered in July of 1952 in the lobby of the Earle Hotel (formerly the Carleton Hotel) at 1552 Jefferson Avenue for a music and dance program following the gift of a piano. Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society the Pacific Northwest has a higher incidence of MS than most anywhere on earth. The hotel's lobby featured marble wainscotting and huge murals of Mount Rainier, daffodil fields and local scenery. Photograph taken for the Multiple Sclerosis Association.
