These solemn youngsters belong to the Daniel Boone schooner Boy Pioneers, a group made up of boys mostly from the Oakland Children's Industrial Home, 3000 So. Washington St. In January of 1926, they are posing at the Y.M.C.A. in Tacoma. The "Y" truck brings them every Saturday afternoon to participate in activities. Top row, left to right, Garnald Roney, Wesley Fellows, Floyd Wells, August Kross and Harold Rinker. Bottom row- Raymond McMann, Moriss Lawrence, Fred Martin, Edward Mitchell, Victor Cappa and Wally Streeter, Pioneer executive. The Boy Pioneers were organized by Dan Beard (1850-1941), American illustrator and naturalist, two years before the Boy Scouts started in England. The Children's Industrial Home was located in the former Harry M. Ball mansion at 3000 South Washington St. and housed children in distress, ages infant to 14. The original structure was damaged in a 1944 explosion and was replaced by a new ranch rambler in 1950. (Tacoma Sunday Ledger 1/24/1926, pg. B-3)

The Y.M.C.A. provided a comfortable setting in their lobby for reading and tinkling the keyboards. Four unidentified men are pictured on September 2, 1924, enjoying some free time by perusing the latest newspapers and books and performing a duet on the organ and piano. The $5000 pipe organ was donated to the Young Men's Christian Association's convalescent ward at the Camp Lewis base hospital by Mrs. W.R. Rust of Tacoma. When the building was dismantled in 1919, the organ was moved to the lobby of the Market St. Y.M.C.A. building. The organ was made by the Estey Organ Co. of Brattleboro, Vt., and was equipped with a mechanism similar to one on a "player piano" that made it possible for anyone to play it. TPL-8755; G68.1-136

Boxing has been called the "sweet science". In this photograph from January, 1936, a group of unidentified young men from Tacoma watch intently as Morgan Jones conducts a class at the Tacoma Y.M.C.A. on the correct technique for working a punching bag. Tacoma's first annual Golden Gloves event was held in 1949. Bob Sanders, at right, watches as contestants weigh in at the YMCA. The big two-day fistic feature was sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission. Seven rugged fighters from Vancouver, B.C., and others from across the Northwest were in attendance. The singing group, the Clef Dwellers, pose for a group portrait at the Y.M.C.A. on March 26, 1957. Sponsored by the Tacoma Arts & Science Club, they would be performing in concert on April 3 in the Weyerhaeuser Hall. The Clef Dwellers are a popular 24-voice mixed chorus specializing in songs from Broadway hits. Formed two years ago, they are directed by Patricia Hellenkamp. In February of 1922, several boys were pictured playing billiards at the Tacoma YMCA located at 714 Market St. Other boys gathered in pairs at small tables for a game of checkers, backlit by large uncovered windows. The Tacoma YMCA was organized on April 6, 1883 and has had continuous service since that date. It is the oldest social service agency in Tacoma. By the 1920's, work with boys was considered the most vital element of its outreach program. Activities and associations were offered to develop the Christian characters of the boys. They included gymnasium workouts, swimming, outdoor activities, Bible classes and the opportunity to serve others. This structure was built in 1909 for the YMCA from a design by Bullard & Hill, architects. The building is now located on the city and national registry. TPL-8754.

In August of 1924 the Tacoma Rotary Club sponsored 60 boys from Tacoma so that they could spend a week at Camp Seymour, the Y.M.C.A. camp at Glen Cove. This group of unidentified boys was photographed in front of the Y.M.C.A. building at 714 Market Street. Through gymnasium games, swimming, camping and Bible study, the Y worked to develop young men healthy in both body and spirit. The "bus" provided transportation to the Y.M.C.A. for many groups of boys, such as those from the Oakland Industrial Home. The Tacoma YMCA was organized in 1883 and has provided continuous service since that time. TPL-8753

Army boxers prepare at the YMCA for the upcoming benefit boxing show at the Armory, scheduled for October 24, 1941. The Young Mens' Business Club (YMBC) is sponsoring the show to raise money for the 103rd Anti Tank Unit's Athletic Fund. Pictured in the ring are Charles Rosengren, Art Gowan and Coach Ernie Jensen. The YMCA sponsored a three session clinic to teach young men the rules to officiating basketball in Nov. 1947. John Heinrick, Varsity Basketball Coach at the College of Puget Sound was in charge of the program. The participants heard lectures, saw floor demonstrations and had the chance to officiate a game by the end of the clinic. The City College Employment Department sought to help people obtain jobs. It was a free service offered in 1924 by the Y.M.C.A. primarily for students and members. Employers were welcome at any time and given immediate attention by staff. Two men are pictured above on September 2, 1924, utilizing the services of the employment department. Their names, and the name of the interviewer, were not given.
