Conference at the First Methodist Church. Registration. Several men gathered at table with adding machines and papers. Tacoma's First Methodist Church hosted the second annual Methodists Northwest conference from June 12- June 16, 1940. Bishop William E. Martin of Omaha presided. In 1939 two branches of the Methodist church in the Northwest, Methodist Episcopal and Protestant Methodist church united to become the Methodist Church. (T. ca. 1934. First Methodist Church, general view of exterior. Heath and Gove, Architects, designed the building and it was dedicated in December of 1916. The original name was the First Methodist Episcopal Church; it was later renamed First United Methodist. The church was located at 5th and "K" (now Martin Luther King Jr. Way.) It had a seating capacity of 1,150. The church was demolished in January of 2007.

First Methodist Choir in Concert. The First Methodist Choir will be having its Easter season concert in the church sanctuary this weekend. Choir director is Mr. Fritz Berntsen, with Ms. Ruth Johnson as the choir soloist and Mr. David Souter as the guest artist from the Bremerton Symphony (names listed in T. Times, 4/1/44, p. 5).

Orpheus Club members are shown post-concert at the First Methodist Church on December 9, 1952. The Orpheus Club, with more than fifty participants, was a male choir that performed in many concerts, including several at the First Methodist Church and was part of the massive collaboration of choirs in productions of Handel's "The Messiah." The December, 1952, concert featured soprano Gloria Marinacci, as guest artist. The Orpheans were directed by Ivan Rasmussen and Helen Nancy Congdon was the piano accompanist. (TNT 11-30-52, D-10)

Nancy Jean Riehl and Donald Maurice Hoff were married August 18, 1951, at the First Methodist Church. Nancy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lock Carl Riehl and Donald is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jens A. Hoff, Astoria. Dr. R. Franklin Thompson, president of the College of Puget Sound, officiated at the ceremony. Nancy wore a Swiss organdy gown with a floral embroidered jacket topping a strapless gown of nylon marquisette. The full skirt extended over a hoop into a dance length train. Mr. and Mrs. Hoff established a home in Portland after August 27th. Both the bride and groom were graduates of the College of Puget Sound. (TNT, 8/19/1951, p.D-3)

Conference at the First Methodist Church. Registration. Delegates to the Methodists Northwest conference receive a warm greeting at the registration table located in the First Methodist Church in June of 1940. 500 from Washington and Idaho were expected to attend the conference which ran from June 12 to June 16. Conference at the First Methodist Church. First Methodist Church of Tacoma was hosting the annual Methodists Northwest Conference from June 12 to June 16, 1940 at the church located at 4th & "K" (later Martin Luther King Jr. Way). Besides the business sessions and committee meetings, delegates found time to relax and enjoy activities in the church's large social hall. Here some attendees line up to play shuffleboard, one of the more popular exercises, the other being archery. (T.Times 6-14-1940, p. 3)

First Methodist Church had a larger than usual attendance on Easter Sunday in 1945, shown here as the congregation departs following the morning service. Many service men were present for both the daytime and evening services to hear church pastor, Dr. Milton A. Marcy, deliver the Easter sermon. (T. Times, 4/2/45, p. 2).

Red Cross nurses aides at First Methodist Church. A group of eighteen nurses aides and their instructor. The nurses aides received their caps, pins and certificates for 80 hours of Red Cross nurses' aide training at the ceremony August 30, 1945. (T.Times, 8/30/1945, p.8)

Jo Ann Lee Royer and Gerald Lee Beitz were married February 9, 1952, at First Methodist Church. The bride was gowned in white satin and lace. Tiny lace-covered buttons extended to the high neckline with a satin collar. The long sleeves had satin cuffs. A cap of lace and pearls held in place the lace-edged veil and Jo Ann carried orchids fastened to a net-trimmed heart. A bouquet of calla lilies stands behind her. (TNT, 3/16/1952, p.D-10)

Mrs. Runacres dress and train were of lace and she held a bouquet of stephanotis. The maid of honor is believed to be Mrs. Runacres' younger sister, Jane.

Wedding portrait of Grace Louise Fullager and William L. Richey Jr. married August 2, 1952 at the First Methodist Church. The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Fullager and the groom was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Richey. The bride wore white brocaded satin with a rolled collar, long sleeves, a sheath skirt and overskirt and a cap of lace with an ankle length veil. A reception at the Tacoma Lawn and Tennis Club followed the ceremony. The couple made their first home at 2917 1/2 No. 21st St. The bride was a graduate of Stadium High, the College of Puget Sound and belonged to Phi Beta Pi sorority.
