From 1946 to January of 1949, overcrowding was so bad at Washington Grade School, 3701 No. 26th St., that four kindergarten classes and one 4th grade class had to meet at Mason methodist Church, and a second 4th grade class met at the McCormick Branch Public Library. In January, 1949 four new class rooms were ready in a new addition to the building, and when the new term started in September, all the Washington students had either new or newly refinished rooms and a new lunchroom-auditorium.
