Eight very serious couples were photographed at Washington School wearing colonial costumes and powdered wigs. They had been rigorously rehearsing the minuet to perform in a series of three big music festival concerts taking place May 4-6, 1926 at Jason Lee, Lincoln and Mason. The concerts were part of the observance of National Music Week. Despite their expressions, the group felt the experience was great fun. Pictured, in no particular order, are Alene Symser, Daniel Stixrud, Barbara Bryan, Frederick Wolf, Barbara Rothermel, Gordon McEachran, Helen May, Lofton Tatum, June Everson, Lewis Jones, Muriel Ellis, Malcolm Shaw, Nancy Quick, Robert Cromwell, Phyllis Zeigler and Robert Martin. ca. 1934. Washington School, named for George Washington, started out as a two room building in 1901. It was soon outgrown and replaced by this brick structure designed by Frederick Heath in 1906. The school continued to be expanded and in 1959 the adjoining Hoyt Elementary School was opened at 2708 N. Union St. The school is now known as Washington Hoyt Elementary.

On the first day of school in 1946, Mary Brady's dog, Tippy followed her to Washington School, 3701 No. 26th Street. Mary, 9, a fourth grade student, had to explain that summer vacation was over for the year, and send Tippy home. (T.Times, 9/4/1946, p.1)

Opening day of School. Mrs. Jennie M. French, principal of Washington School, posed with some returning students on the first day of school, September 1, 1936, before gently telling the young man that his dog would have to return home. Mrs. French was the principal of Washington for 15 years, from 1926-1941. She was a leader in the fight for teachers education, pay and retirement. She deeded the tract of land on which the Tahoma Terrace retirement home was constructed and worked for its founding for 30 years. (T. Dressed in their best on picture day in 1925 is the 8A class of Washington School. Boys were neatly attired in suits and pullovers, and girls with bobbed hairdos wore middy-blouses and skirts. Mrs. Jennie M. French, the principal of Washington School, stood outside and greeted poised and well dressed Cherine Milos, a new student. On the first day of school September 1, 1936 over 21,000 Tacoma boys and girls returned to school. Mrs. French was the principal of Washington for 15 years from 1926-1941. She spent most of her 49 years in Tacoma, from her first teaching job in 1908 to her death in 1957, as an advocate for teacher's education, rights and pay. She helped organize the Tacoma Retired Teachers in 1946 and deeded the 3 acre tract on South Union Ave., where the 152 unit Tahoma Terrace teachers' retirement home opened in 1975, to the Teachers Home Corp. in 1954.
