Lincoln High School shop teacher Ned Ubben, right, watched in December of 1937 as Irene Kuhne and Otto Robinson mended two of the items given to needy families in Tacoma by the school's students. Maintaining a tradition started in 1922 by The Lincoln News, the school's student publication, Lincoln students filled 66 Christmas baskets with food and toys. In December of 1937, Peggy Bently and Lucille Rudd (order not known) were "Santa's Twins" at Lincoln High School. The two young men are Harold Oswald (left) and Gordon Ambrose. Peggy and Lucille were the organizing force behind the Lincoln News' efforts to provide a Merry Christmas to 66 needy families in Tacoma. In a tradition begun in 1922, food, toys and clothing were collected by Lincoln High School students and distributed in gift baskets to families in need selected by Tacoma's social service agencies. Used toys that were donated were repaired in the Lincoln High School metal and wood shops, and clothes was repaired or sewn in the school's home economics classes. (T. Times 12-21-1937, p. 12)

The count is two and two on the batter as three unidentified women, attending the "vacation camp" being held at Lincoln High School, enjoyed a rousing baseball game in July of 1925. An annual camp, sponsored by the Washington State College extension service, offered western Washington farm women classes to help them manage their homes and farms including courses in cooking and sewing; they had plenty of time for fun too. In February of 1939, the Tacoma Times ran this photograph of Lincoln High School swimming Coach Sheldon Brooks posed poolside with 24 members of the swim squad, the defending champions of Washington's prep ranks. The boys were, on the elevated portion, left to right, Harry Schramm, Bert Barber, Chuck Rohr, Don Ellis, Johnny Krutilla, Kenny Platzer, Bud Solum and Wallace Tuckey. Staff of the Lincoln High School weekly publication "The News." A group of young men and faculty advisor Homer A. Post, standing 2nd from left, are gathered around a desk. A standard Remington typewriter and wire baskets facilitate the budding editors' work. The group has just received word that for the 5th time in 6 years, the paper had been given the Pacemaker All American award by the National Scholastic Press Association. Out of 967 entered high school publications, 218 were named All American and only 10 were named Pacemakers. Ralph Spencer is the editor of the paper. The Young Men's Business Club Auxiliary helped raise money for new high school band uniforms for Stadium, Lincoln and Bellarmine in April 1947. The "Band Aid " committee distributed collection/donation bottles throughout Tacoma in cooperation with local businesses. Children who have learned swimming under the Red Cross, American Red Cross, Mrs. Thomsen. A group of girls stand in the pool while one of the swimming instructors helps one of the girls learn to float in the water. More girls sit around the edges of the pool watching. Children who have learned swimming under the Red Cross, American Red Cross, Mrs. Thomsen. A large group of boys stand in the pool at Lincoln High School watching while the instructor helps one of the boys learn how to float. Over 5,000 free lessons were given so far that summer. All instructors were trained at an American Red Cross safety institute. The free lessons were open to children from 8 to 17 years of age.

The Marchetta Ki girls marching unit at Lincoln High School was scheduled to perform at two football games during the first weekend of November in 1948. On Friday evening, November 5 they appeared at the Bellingham - Lincoln H. S. game in the Lincoln Bowl. The next day they were part of the halftime show at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S) Homecoming game against Central Washington. Lincoln High School's Junior-Senior prom was held in the school's gymnasium on January 21, 1949 with Keith Rader and John Hreha as the event's chairmen. The theme for the evening was "Top Hat Twirl" and the gym was decorated with a top hat, cane, white gloves and a New York City skyline. A local orchestra played for the students. In January of 1949, twenty journalism students at Lincoln High School were hard at work planning for the day that they would take over the production of the Tacoma Times. They were going to be completely responsible for gathering news, meeting copy deadlines, selling advertising, setting type and running the huge rotary presses for the five daily editions of the paper published on February 8th. Four Tacoma high schools, Lincoln, Stadium, Clover Park, and Bellarmine, were scheduled to spend one day at The Times, gaining practical experience in all aspects of the newspaper business. (T. During a costume fitting in March of 1954, Gale Bass checked Barbara Jensen's hemline on the dress she wore in the Lincoln High School production of the play "The Robe". Forty-five Lincoln seniors took part in presenting the tale of a Roman tribune who won the robe worn by Christ as the senior class play. Miss Jensen played the part of Theodosia Eupolis. The student production, directed by Morris Summers, was only the second time the play has been performed in the Pacific Northwest. Performances were presented April 7-8-9 in the school auditorium. Lincoln High School band for the 1954 school yearbook The Lincolnian. The band, under the direction of Robert Dezell, played at basketball and football games. They played concerts at the middle schools and broadcast two performances on KMO. The highlight of their year was their "Bach to Pop" concert in March. (1954 Lincolnian- see yearbook for names)

Lincoln High School enjoyed a thriving musical atmosphere in the 1950's. Both the school orchestra and band attracted many participants. The orchestra performed in the senior class play, Christmas Vespe play and winter concert, among others. They traveled to local junior high schools to acquaint the students with Lincoln's talented musicians. The orchestra's performances were broadcast over the Campus Radio Theatre to give the people of Tacoma a chance to hear local musicians. Beauties participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest sponsored by the Lincoln High School Music and Physical Education Departments on February 21, 1941 were also trying out for the 10 model roles in the upcoming original musical comedy "Of Men and Models." Participating contestants had be to 5'4" or over and wear bathing suits and high heel shoes. Night school classes at Lincoln High School. On Monday and Thursday nights, over 1700 adult students descended on local schools to take part in the 61 classes offered in night school. This appears to be a shop class, one of the most popular offerings. The two students listening intently to the instructor are identified as Bill English, kneeling, and Jack Clark. (T. Harold Stamey, owner of Stamey Insurance, sponsored several amateur baseball and basketball teams in the 1950's. It takes a lot of hot dogs to fill up hungry students at Lincoln High School. In December of 1955 the cafeteria staff at Lincoln were prepared to cook hundreds of wieners as part of a typical school lunchtime menu. The cafeteria staff member are (l to r) M. The large staff of Lincoln High School apparently enjoyed a Christmas gathering on school grounds prior to the 1955 Christmas break. Corsages were given to all women staff members. There were probably skits as entertainment; at least three ladies in the first row are dressed in cancan outfits while a few men have their pant legs rolled up. Music was an important part of Lincoln High School in the 1950's. Their orchestra, under the direction of Robert Dezell, was considered one of the finest high school orchestras in the state. Musicians kept busy with many appearances locally, including the Western Washington Fair, Mid-Winter and Spring concerts, and participating in junior high school Christmas Vespers. In addition, 26 orchestral members were selected to join the Puget Sound Festival Orchestra.
