Bellarmine High School Midget Football Team. Bellarmine, coached by Leo Eckstein, won the city championship in 1938, 14 to 7 against Lincoln High School. Midget class players were 132 pounds and under. The last city midget championship was played in 1940. Bellarmine's annual Bazaar was a day filled with a variety of activities, including a theatrical production and an evening semi formal dance. The event was sponsored by the Philomathea Club. Bellarmine High School won their first city high school championship in 20 years of competition in November of 1947 when they beat Lincoln High School 14-0 at the Tacoma Stadium. It was their first win ever against Lincoln. Their victory over Lincoln guaranteed that the traditional Thanksgiving Day game between Lincoln and Stadium would be the first in 20 years that would not determine the winner of the Tacoma crown.

Bellarmine High School provided a Catholic education for boys. Father Henry J. Schultheis, S. J. was President of Bellarmine and Father J. C. Meckes, S. J. was Principal during this school year. Bellarmine was one of two high schools in Washington State that offered ROTC units. Students met every day for one class period and wore their uniforms twice per week, uniforms were provided by the government. In March of 1949, Bellarmine High School journalists were given the opportunity to put their classroom education into practice by the Tacoma Times. In 1949, the journalism students in each of the area high schools worked as interns for the Tacoma Times for several weeks. Standing are (l to r): Mr. Neill R. Bellarmine High School's annual Bazaar offered students and their guests a wide variety of activities. The event included all types of booths, a fish pond with wonderful prizes, concession stands, games and a theatrical production put on by students. Tom O'Leary (center) was yell leader at Bellarmine High School during the 1945-46 school year. Backed by Charles Kelly (left) and B. Ludeman (right), his cheers were described in the school yearbook as being like "a string of firecrackers exploding". Although none of Bellarmine's varsity teams won city titles that school year, there was still plenty to cheer about with four Lions football players being named to the Tacoma All-City team and three basketball players receiving the same honor. The Annual Military Ball at Bellarmine was sponsored by the Bellarmine Reserve Officers Training Corps, over 200 people attended the dance. On Tuesday May 9, 1944, as a tribute to their mothers, the cadets of Bellarmine High School's R.O.T.C. battalion staged a military review and parade for the Philomanthea Mothers' Club. Following the review, awards were presented to individual cadets who's records in school warranted special recognition in the areas of academic excellence, leadership and marksmanship. Eleven of the participants shown in this photograph are identified in the Tacoma Times of May 10, 1944 on page 5. (T. Times, 5/10/44, p. 5).

By the close of the 1940's, Europe and Asia were at peace, but the R.O.T.C. program continued to function as an important segment of the school's activities. The R.O.T.C. remained involved in the daily activities of the school: for example, a salute at the breaking of the bread, and sponorship of school dances held every year. May 11, 1943 review of Junior ROTC at Bellarmine High School. Portrait of dignitaries including priests, instructors, military officials and a woman. Over 300 guests witnessed the inspection and review. The event held soon after Mother's Day honored the mothers of the cadets and started with a military field mass and breakfast. Carey, Douglas Johnson, and James Buchanan. At the all male Catholic high school, military drill was compulsory for sophomores and juniors. The 1966 Cheney Studs basketball team posed for a group picture on March 9, 1966, at the Bellarmine gym. They would soon leave for Denver for their second consecutive appearance at the AAU basketball tournament as the Northwest representative. The team would lose to the top-seeded Armed Forces All Stars. The Studs finished their season with a 23-6 record. Jim Van Beek, #22, led the team in individual scoring for a 21.9 point average. Clint Names, #20, was the total Studs scoring champ at 587 points in 29 games. The Studs were led by player-coach George Grant.
