Bank executives pose at the company party held October 19, 1940 at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club celebrating the 55th anniversary of the National Bank of Washington. The Tacoma County and Golf Club held a Halloween party for the children of the members in October of 1951. This unidentifiable young lady, posed at the foot of the club house staircase, came dressed as a dancing cigarette pack. Old Gold's dancing cigarette packs first appeared on television in the late 1940s. By 1951 they were so well known and popular with the public that they were "TV stars" even though the dancers inside the boxes were faceless and "bodyless". (TNT 11/4/1951 p. D-1)

The club dates back to about 1894, with the club facilities relocated in 1904 to its present location, which was formerly the R. B. Lehman farm. The country club was starting their annual week for juniors, with sailboat races as the first event. Juniors would be participating in tennis, golf, swimming, picnics and dances. In 1894, golf was introduced to Tacoma by a small group of displaced Scotsmen who negotiated to lease 280 acres of prairie land in Edison (now South Tacoma.) By 1904, the club made plans to relocate and the R.B. Lehman farm on the eastern shore of American Lake was purchased. This purchase, along with some adjacent property, gave the club 237 acres to stretch out on. This became the first permanent home of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, the oldest continuing country club west of the Mississippi. ("A History of Pierce County, Wa." vol. 1)

This photograph shows the clubhouse of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club on American Lake as it looked from the lake side of the building in September of 1956. It was built in 1910 from plans by the architects Russell and Babcock to replace the original clubhouse which was destroyed by fire. By 1956, it was known as "The Grand Old Lady". Its most prominent feature was a spiral staircase in the entry hall, which appears in many wedding and party pictures of the time. A fire gutted the structure in 1961. The Clubhouse at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. In June of 1909, a fire that started in the servant's quarters burned the original clubhouse to the ground. This regal building, known as the "Grand Old Lady," rose in its place. It was best remembered for its gracious spiral staircase in the entrance hall, shown in many wedding portraits. Members of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club reveled at a masquerade ball at the clubhouse on Halloween, 1934. In the center in kilts with wig askew was future Mayor of Tacoma Harry P. Cain. To the far left was his wife, Marjorie Cain, dressed as a Russian cossack. Cain was holding the leg of an unidentified French maid, as an unidentified aviator held that of his wife in this interesting picture. The unidentified cross dressing couple to the right smiled merrily at the camera.

Marjorie Cain hosted a luncheon at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club for the new First Lady of Fort Lewis, Mrs. Harry J. Collins. Major General Collins is the recently appointed Commanding Officer of Fort Lewis and the 2nd Infantry Division; Fort Lewis is the 2nd largest permanent U.S. Army post in the country. In May of 1940, Ruth Babbit was photographed swinging into the spring golfing season at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Every Tuesday was Ladies' Day at the Club, and over 50 female members took the opportunity to practice their follow through on the links. Ruth Kennedy Babbit was the wife of Alexander Babbit, then assistant manager of the Bank of California National Association. Mrs. Babbit also excelled in figure skating, later becoming an international skating judge, and was a well known water color artist. She passed away on August 31, 1992, at the age of 89. (T. The bank was celebrating its 55th anniversary in business. The party was attended by 200 officers and employees from the Tacoma main branch and all surrounding branch offices.

On June 30, 1943, women at the Tacoma Country Club make surgical dressings for the war injured. The women are working at tables in a cheerful room washed with window light and decorated with floral wallpaper. Most of the women are wearing the white uniform and coronet and veil of the Red Cross Production Service. The volunteers at the Country Club worked Mondays and Wednesday from 12-4 and Friday 10-4.
