The Golden Anniversary of the Union Club was celebrated September 22, 1938. It was attended by two of the charter members, John S. Baker and Alexander Baillie, as well as members of the "Old Guard" and current members. The Club came into being in the summer of 1888, when a need was recognized for an organization to further the fledgling Tacoma's growing business interests and for a place to entertain distinguished guests. It was organized by the late George Browne, who met with 30 local business men to form the first club. Soon the club had 100 members, paying dues of $250 each. Proceeds were used to build the Clubhouse. (T. Times 9/23/1938, pg. 18)

The Union Club's 50th anniversary reunion was held on September 22, 1938. Nine members of the "Old Guard" are pictured, left to right: Frank Hale, W. R. Nichols, William H. Miller, John S. Baker, John Dempsey, Alexander Baillie, William Virges, Ralph Metcalf, and Arthur Grafton. The "Old Guard" was organized at a dinner 32 years prior. On June 9, 1939, the unidentified University-Union Club doorman opened the automobile door for E. F. Cardin, Jr. and Lorain Cousins, in formal attire, to enter the Club under the canvas-covered awning. The doorman's elegant white uniform added glamour to the evening event, attended by 500 guests, celebrating the clubs' merger. By 1938, the Union Club had been located in the elegant building at 539 Broadway for 50 years. In 1939, a decision was reached by the Union Club and the University Club to merge into one, the University-Union Club, at this location. The membership for the joint club was full at 450 members. On August 9, 1939, Emory Reagan Sr., a flagpole painter, used a "bos'n's chair" to ascend the 150 foot flagpole at the University Union Club at 539 Broadway. The pole took 5 1/2 hours to paint, during which time Reagan remained aloft. His young sons Duane, 8, and Emory, Jr., 11, kept him supplied with paint and brushes, sent up by a rope and pulley. Emory Jr., 11, holds on to the rope that sends supplies up to Dad, eliminating the need for him to go up and down the pole repeatedly. Duane, 8, holds a paintbrush and Mickey, the family's two month old terrier. The senior Mr. Reagan remained aloft on the flagpole for 5 1/2 hours completing his paint job. Miss Hopper was a surprise guest at the Tacoma Drama League supper party which followed the opening of "Knickerbocker Holiday" at the new Little Theatre on North 2nd and "I" St. She had just flown into town to attend the premiere of "Tugboat Annie Sails Again," and would be broadcasting her "Hedda Hopper's Hollywood" program on site the following evening for a national audience. It was the tradition of the old University Club (newly reformed in 1939 as the University-Union Club) to entertain the Justices of the State Supreme Court at an annual dinner and entertainment. The 33rd annual event was held November 20, 1940 at the club with Mayor Harry P. Cain as toastmaster. The "entertainment" portion was turned over to the Tacoma Drama League. They are pictured portraying the Justices in rapt interest over the finer points of a divorce case. The "judges" are, left to right, J. Walley Showman (reading the Police Gazette), William L. Annual Judges Banquet at University-Union Club. Seated are Govenor-elect Arthur B. Langlie (center), Mayor Harry P. Cain (perched on arm of chair) and U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd T. Black. Others in the November 21, 1940, photograph include State Supreme Court justices William J. Steinert, C.G. Jeffers, Samuel R. Driver, George B. Simpson, John T. Robinson and retired justice William D. Askew. The 33rd annual dinner for state supreme court judges was held on Thanksgiving Eve, November 20, 1940, with 271 men in attendance. Mayor Cain acted as Toastmaster. Mr. Langlie had been involved in a very close gubernatorial race with Spokane Democrat and former U.S. Senator C.C. Dill who refused to concede weeks after the election. Mr. Langlie would be the only GOP candidate to win a major office in Washington State in 1940. TPL-4586. Alfred Copp, far right, was the chairman for the "Sadie Hawkins" costume ball planning committee in March of 1941. He had to hand crank the committee's "jalopy" to get everyone to their pre-party rehearsal. The dance was to be held at the University Union Club and everyone attending the "Dogpatch" themed affair was encouraged to dress like one of the characters in the popular "Lil' Abner" comic strip. The other committee members are: (l to r) Dr. Carroll Carlson, Miss Frances Parlaman, James Will, Miss Muriel McDonald, Mrs. Helen D. Mann and Mrs. Dolores Carlson. The room is swaying to the swinging sounds of Stan Miskoski and his orchestra at the University Union Club's Sadie Hawkins dance on March 15, 1941. The orchestra is attired in keeping with the Dogpatch theme of the Club's first costume ball in two years. Sadie Hawkins Day was an American Folk event started by Al Capp in his Li'l Abner comic strip. Decades before women's liberation, it was the day when emboldened females could ask out the man of their choice.

The pairs are seated on a hay bale and tin cups and cans have taken the places of drink glasses for the evening. Sadie Hawkins Day, usually celebrated in November, was the invention of Al Capp in his Li'l Abner comic strip. It was the day, decades before women's liberation, when women could ask out the man of their dreams. By the 1930's, it was sweeping the nation. The schedule for the evening included dancing from 9:30- 1, followed by a supper.

On March 17, 1941, an unidentified University-Union Club member enjoyed a drink, a fine cigar, and a kiss on the cheek from a costumed dancer prior to the club's annual Saint Patrick's Day Dinner. By tradition the club's members donned aprons and chef hats to cook their own meal at the Saint Patrick's Day Dinner and Stag Night. His fellow club member looked on with a big grin.
