The 11th annual President's Anniversary Ball of the University-Union Club drew a large crowd on May 5, 1950. Two men, one older and one younger, wearing white dinner jackets and bow ties, stand behind the candy counter and in front of the cigarette and cigar display in the lobby of the club's building. Harry deWild (right), the chef at the University Union Club, 539 Broadway, helped Whitson M. Jones carve a large rack of beef ribs into steaks for the 10th Annual University Union Club St. Patrick's Day steak fry held on Friday March 17, 1950. At the strictly stag affair, each member donned a white cap and apron, and fried his own steak. "Irish" members who planned to attended included: John "O'Anderson", the mayor of Tacoma; Horace "O'Geer", the assistant city corporate council; Einar "MacSather", the secretary-treasurer for Klopfenstein's men's furnishings; and William "O'Guyles" of Guyles & Co. insurance.(TNT 3/16/1950 pg. 21)

Miss Saxton exits from the University Union Club where she has been planning some of the festivities for her upcoming marriage 3/24/1951 to Frank DeMilt Hill. Ten year old Judith Turner greets guests at the door of the University Union Club at the Tea being given for her mother, Mrs. Bettina Turner, on January 6, 1951. Two hundred guests were invited to the Club Tea given in honor of Mrs. Turner's upcoming marriage to Benjamin Moore of Olympia at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Being greeted by the young girl are, left to right, Mrs. Stanberry Foster, Mrs. Zen Albertz, Mrs. Doane Brodie and Mrs. Dale Sweeney, all of Olympia. Staff at the University-Union Club stand behind an elaborate buffet in November, 1951. The tables are covered with lace tablecloths; a variety of salads and meats, including a rack of either lamb or beef, are displayed for members to consume. The University-Union Club was formed in 1939 out of a merger between the Union Club and the University Club; the building was located at 539 Broadway and thought to be designed by the architectural firm headed by Stanford White. It is now a restaurant called David's on Broadway.

Three costumed men participate in a skit during the Tacoma Printers Association's banquet held at the University-Union Club on December 2, 1952. Two masked men clad in white coats and wearing "Steilacoom" hats are escorting a rather disheveled looking individual in a straitjacket through an open doorway. Although the masked men are unidentifiable, the man in the straitjacket is believed to be longtime Tacoma Public School faculty member Robert C. Evans. University Union Club Steak Fry. Club members sit around the table with their napkins tucked in at their chins preparing to chow down at this annual event. Once a year, members would gather together to cook their own steaks and enjoy a show at the Club. The event was usually sold out.

Gerald Thomas (third from left, front row) will be representing Tacoma in the 2nd Annual International Model Plane Contest, which is being sponsored by the Plymouth Motor Corporation. Gerald is the winner of the model plane contest that took place in Tacoma at Stadium Bowl. He will be traveling to Detroit, Michigan to participate in the big event, all expenses are being covered by the Tacoma Plymouth dealerships. On June 8, 1948 Stadium High School's senior women were the hostesses for a special orchid luncheon held in a private dinning room at the University-Union Club. Each of the 52 guests received a purple Vanda orchid, flown in from Hilo on the island of Hawaii. The mothers of the four hostesses helped to arrange the luncheon, and were gifted with an orchid corsage. The luncheon was a long anticipated yearly event for Stadium seniors. The Orchid luncheon hostesses were (l to r) Gloria Patterson, Beverly Warner, Shirley Llewellyn and Diane Summers (T. Times, 6/12/48, p. 9).

This lovely orchid is from Hilo, Hawaii. The orchids were ordered by the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, during the recent visit to Hawaii as part of the Goodwill Tour. Stadium High School girls who attend the upcoming Orchid luncheon will receive orchid corsages. The hostesses' mothers will also be guests and receive beautiful larger orchid corsages (T. University-Union Club was established in 1939 when the club was formed by the merging of two separate clubs. Over 350 people were members of the club.
