Modernistic furniture and design are present in the newly remodeled Pierce County Savings & Loan Association. The savings and loan had an open house for the public in March, 1954. The building was initially built in 1888 by Col. J. M. Dougan and housed a variety of businesses. It was purchased by the Pierce County Savings & Loan in 1950. Walter C. A new exterior sign for Pierce County Federal Savings & Loan has just been delivered to the building site on Pacific Avenue early on June 30, 1958. The Sunnen crane is in the process of lifting the sign from the truck bed in preparation of its erection. Pierce County Federal Savings & Loan was located at 1007 Pacific Avenue, flush between the Bank of California and Hunt's Office Supply. The W.H. A portable crane has lifted the sign in preparation for its erection. In order not to cause a traffic hazard, the work was accomplished at 6 o'clock in the morning. Even at 6 o'clock in the morning, cranes plus electric signs still equaled a fascinating draw for spectators. Military personnel are among those viewing the erection of a new Pierce County Federal Savings & Loan sign on the edge of the narrow building. The savings & loan was located between Hunt's Office Supply and the Bank of California on Pacific Avenue. A large sign on the side of the building indicated that a 3 1/2% dividend was paid currently on accounts with savings federally insured up to $10,000. A large Pierce County Federal Savings & Loan sign tilts dramatically as it is being removed from its Pacific Ave. location on January 30, 1967. Two large cranes block part of the roadway while workers stare at the proceedings. Hunt's Office Supply is next door; Security Building in the distance. This same sign was photographed on June 30, 1958, prior to its erection at the savings & loan. (See D115285-12) The savings & loan had decided that they had outgrown their 40-year-old name and therefore sponsored a contest to let the public pick the new name. Prizes included a weekend at the Winthrop Hotel, free dinners, a limo ride, receipt of income on $1,000,000 for five days at 5% annual rate; entries were to be postmarked by 3-31-67. The new name, Lifetime Federal Savings & Loan Association, was announced in an ad in the June 15, 1967, News Tribune. Ralph H. Clawson of Tacoma was the first prize winner. Mrs. Janet A. A long, sweeping semi-circle with matching curves in the terrazzo floor provides a sleek design to the newly remodeled Pierce County Savings & Loan Association. Tellers await customers behind connected rich walnut counters; a multi-panel mural of Mount Rainier graces the wall.
