The Crystal Ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop was the site of the November 25, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance. One couple sitting on edge of table catch-up on events with another couple who is just arriving. Streamline formals seem to have been popular that year as well as marcelled hairdos. (T. Elks Club installation of new Exalted Ruler. Group of men seated at banquet tables in this photograph dated April 1, 1953. Among those officials standing at rear is Burr (Burritt B.) Anderson who had been elected as the club's new exalted ruler. He is second to the left, next to his father Emmett T. Anderson (third from left) who was a past Grand Exalted Ruler and served as Lt. Governor of the State of Washington 1953-57. According to the News Tribune, Lt. Gov. Anderson was the installing officer, making it the first time in history that a national officer of the Elks had installed his son in the presiding position of a local organization. About 600 Elks members saw the induction. Burritt Anderson succeeded John S. Roberts (standing, third from right) as head of the Tacoma Elks Lodge No. 174. The Tacoma Elks Club held their annual Extravaganza in the spring of 1953. Elks members owned many businesses in Tacoma; view of billboard with signs listing individual member-owned businesses, many signs have caricatures. The largest sign is that of Jack Roberts, co-owner of Narrows Marina.

Members of the Afifi Shrine examine a book of tickets to sell for the Shrine "All Star" Circus, to be held at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse April 9-12, 1953. They are all wearing fezzes with the Afifi logo imprinted on them. Second man to the right is believed to be Mayor John H. Anderson who was persuaded to buy the first book of tickets. Behind the men is a large cutout of a Afifi clown holding a sign filled with circus information. The eighth annual Shrine Circus would have Jerry Colonna, famed comic, as master of ceremonies. There would be six performances held over four days and would be open to the general public. Colonna was expected to ride atop the Shrine's circus calliope in the Daffodil Parade on April 11th. The 23rd Annual convention of the Northwest Loyal Order of Moose was held in Tacoma in July of 1938. Over 2500 members of 32 lodges from all parts of the Northwest, covering Alaska to the California border and east to Montana, descended on the Winthrop Hotel, convention headquarters. Over 1000 participated in the parade held on July 22nd, from its formation at 7th & Pacific to its conclusion at the Winthrop. Here women in white uniforms are pictured marching down a Tacoma street. Herds of Moose have descended on Tacoma for their 23rd Annual Northwest Moose Association Convention. One of the highlights of the three day affair is the Loyal Order of Moose Convention Parade. Photograph shows men in uniform marching in front of Safeway's Bay City Market and Hotel Ridpath on Pacific Avenue. All local bands, drum corps and drill teams were invited to join at the parade's formation at 7th & Pacific. Over 1000 responded and marched in the parade. (T. Shriners from around the state assembled in Tacoma and departed by a special train for the Golden Jubilee Imperial Council Session in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. Over 100,000 fraternal brothers were expected to attend the sessions in LA.

It was estimated that over 100,000 people would be attending.

In June of 1938, the Shriners descend on Tacoma before leaving for their Afifi Shrine Golden Jubilee,1888-1938, in Los Angeles. Shriners from Southwest and Central Washington, as well as Yakima, Wenatchee and Grays Harbor have gathered in Tacoma to board a special 16 car train to LA. The Shriners parade heads north on the 900 block of Broadway over streetcar tracks embedded in the pavement. The trolley car appears to be operating during the parade. (T. Times 6/3/1938, pg. 2)

The men of Theta Chi fraternity pose on November 7, 1952, in their chapter room at the College of Puget Sound. Twenty five members are pictured with their fraternity crest which indicates the fraternity was first established nationally in 1856. Theta Chi's fall president was Norm Huber; his name, along with others, is listed in the 1953 Tamanawas yearbook. The fraternity had quite a successful year at C.P.S.; they placed first in the Homecoming Parade and also captured first place in the comic division of the Daffodil Parade. Academically, they were listed as first among Greek men. (1953 Tamanawas, p. 68-69)
