The club members had many activities planned for the national leader; Anderson had just visited lodges in the East and South, and was visiting the Tacoma lodge on official business. In March of 1937, Lillian Morey, left, and Laura Ellis were ably handling the publicity for the one of the most anticipated society events for the younger set in Bremerton, the Rainbow Girl-DeMolay ball held at the end of March. The Elks Band was playing and majorette Gloria Ellexson was performing while club members waited on July 7, 1949 at Union Station for the train taking them to the national convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The Tacoma Elks ritual team, which held the state championship, together with coach Russ Barlow, would also compete in Cleveland. It was reported during the convention that Gloria Ellexson, a student at the College of Puget Sound, had been named national champion drum majorette. Ordered by Harry Lynch, Elks Club. Forrest M. LaSuer, secretary of the Tacoma Moose Lodge, won a membership drive contest in June 1949. Harold Jordan, secretary of the Kelso-Longview Moose Lodge, lost the contest and was required to push LaSuer in a wheelbarrow, wearing a feed-sack dress with bonnet. LaSuer enjoyed the ride - he is wearing his own bonnet and night shirt, is holding a baby bottle and smoking a cigar. Jordan pushed the triumphant LaSuer past the Moose Lodge quarters at 737 Commerce St. (7/5/1949, p.2)

Eagles. The Eagles had an all-accordion band, the first organized since before World War II. They presented a recital May 25, 1949, at Eagles Temple. The band was part of the Eagles' youth guidance program and was under the direction of Louis Nomellini (standing center, first row). 25 girls attending banquet at Crawford's Delta Rho Gamma, Phyllis Brynestad. The Delta Rho Gamma sorority of Pacific Lutheran College held several reunions in the first week of September 1948 and on September 11th, Crawford's Sea Grill was the scene of a reunion banquet. Several of the young women would be going to different colleges in the fall and this was the last reunion before their departure. Miss Beulah Heidahl, new dean of women at PLC, was also introduced. College of Puget Sound students were helping place nine brass plaques bearing the name of one of the fraternities and sororities, which have been active for the past twenty five years. The plaques are being placed by the Student Union Building. The students and college administrators participated in a special dedication just prior to the cement being poured. Lillian M. (Mrs. J.Donald) Shotwell was installed as Queen of the Zora Temple No. 5 of the Daughters of the Nile in a ceremony held at Fellowship Masonic Hall on March 26, 1948. The room had been transformed into a scene of Oriental splendor with the river Nile flowing in the background. The Egyptian chorus and Egyptian dancers performed. Queen Lillian Shotwell carried a shower bouquet of baby orchids for the installation. Mrs. Shotwell is shown seated on the throne, which is covered with oriental carpets. Daughters of the Nile, Mrs. Shotwell installation at Fellowship Hall, Don Shotwell. The Daughters of the Nile held their annual installation of officers of the Zora Temple No. 5 March 26, 1948, in Fellowship Hall of the Masonic Temple. These thirteen women wear evening gowns, above-the-elbow lace, fingerless gloves, and floral headpieces. The purpose of the order is to pursue "a philosophy of living which will enable them (the members), when shadows lengthen, to look back on a life well spent." Three two-man crews of painters work from platforms suspended on the south wall of the Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, in August of 1947. The temple, dedicated on February 22, 1916, was designed by E. Frere Champney. The staircase next to the building, that connects Broadway with Commerce St., is known as the Spanish steps, and were intended to serve as a fire escape for the building. The Elks Temple has fallen into disrepair, and its future is in question. TPL-8446
