ca. 1935. The Tacoma Totem Pole at the foot of South 10th Street, near the south side of the original Tacoma Hotel, circa 1935. A painter is suspended from ropes halfway up the pole. Building by McKim, Mead and White, Architects, New York City. The Totem Pole was commissioned by W.F. Sheard and Chester Thorne and presented to the city in 1903. It was carved by two Alaskan carvers in the Haida tribal style. (filed with Argentum)

ca. 1935. Throughout the mid-1930s, Yelm's irrigation water system was subsidized by the Works Progress Administration, WPA. The government furnished labor and much of the lumber for flumes to irrigate farm land. Ross Houston had a contract in 1935 to install a wooden water flume on this farm near Yelm. At the same time, his Houston Treated Wood and Fabricated Wood Products were installing prefabricated wooden street gutters in Tacoma.

To the left is a xylophone and in front of the drums is a violin. The Maccabees were a fraternal and benevolent organization for men, providing monetary benefits in the case of sickness, disability or death. ca. 1935. Columbia Brewing Company was purchased by Elmer Hemrich in 1933 and the name was changed to Columbia Breweries, Inc. The automobiles in this photograph are from the 1920's and 1930's which provide an estimated date of 1935. The brewery has been added onto with another structure along the right side about halfway back and a one story addition at the top. In 1936 Columbia began construction of a $120,000 bottling shop, a portion of which was devoted to canned beer. Columbia was the first of the Northwest brewers to introduce canned beer in this territory. This shop completed the third unit of their building program, the first two being the brew house and cellars. Copies of old prints ordered by Columbia Breweries in 1951. (Ledger, 3/30/1936)

ca. 1935. Addie (Mrs. Ray) Gamble and her dog sitting on the lawn in this circa 1935 photograph. Mrs. Gamble has the index finger of her right hand pointing ahead although her pet's eyes are focused elsewhere. Mr. and Mrs. Gamble were well known residents of Tacoma who resided at 3915 North 30th St. Mr. Gamble was a prominent businessman, amateur magician, and avid collector of carved elephants.
