The Jackson Brothers Meat Market was one of two meat markets located within Mannings Market at 1102 Commerce Street in 1938. They were located on the north side of the market and had been there since the market was founded in 1920. Brothers Elmer, Walter, unidentified associate and Edwin Jackson (from left) are pictured behind the refrigerated showcases which are filled with sausages, weiners, and assorted cold cuts. Jackson Brothers was an authorized distributor of Swift's branded beef, whose hams are prominently displayed. The meat market remained at the same location until 1972 when the building was razed. Mrs. Pearl Britton Lees is shown at her loom in this photograph from November 1938. Because of a high degree of interest in traditional crafts in the Tacoma area, Mrs. Lees started the Wayside Arts and Crafts School. The classes for the school were taught at her home at 3520 So. 10th St. In her weaving, she used yarn made from wool produced by sheep raised in Pierce County. Her wool dyes came from locally grown plants and trees. (T. Times, 11/11/1938, p. 4)..

Pearl Britton Lees demonstrates hand-weaving on her loom for the Weaver's Guild. Lees teaches the recently revived craft in her home at 3520 So. 10th St., where she operates the Wayside Arts and Craft School. One of the techniques demonstrated was the purely American "Summer and Winter" weave in an eight harness technique. (T. Times, 11/11/1938, p. 4).

Members of the Puyallup Valley Japanese-American Citizens League dance group. They will be performing a ceremonial dance in traditional Japanese dress during "Japan Night", a Japanese bazaar, to be held at Fife High School on November 12, 1938. The second annual bazaar, carnival and dance was held to acquaint Tacoma and Valley people with the young group's activities and culture. The group is attired in kimonos and posed in front of a background of cherry blossoms. The watching group on the left is composed of Haruko Yaguchi (standing), Fugiye Sasaki (seated), Lillian Mizukami (kneeling) and three year old Arlene Sakahara. In November of 1938, five unidentified young ladies dressed in traditional kimonos rehearsed a ceremonial dance staged among artificial flowering cherry trees. They were members of the 18 person Puyallup Valley Japanese American Citizen's League dance group. The group performed November 12th at "Japan Night," a bazaar hosted at Fife High School. This was the second year that the Citizen's League had sponsored this bazaar, carnival and dance, intended to acquaint Tacoma and Valley people with the group's activities and culture. A mixture of traditional Japanese and American food was served, followed by the evening's entertainment of ceremonial dances performed in front of a background of cherry blossoms and red, white and blue hangings. Over 1,000 people turned out to glimpse the culture of Old Japan. (T. Times 11/10/38, p. 20)

Group portrait of eighteen young women, and a child, who are members of the Puyallup Valley Japanese-American Citizens League dance group. They will be performing a ceremonial dance in traditional Japanese dress during "Japan Night," a Japanese bazaar, to be held at Fife High School on November 12, 1938. Over 1,000 people attended the event that offered a glimpse into the island empire's ancient culture. In the afternoon, girls in kimonos served Japanese noodles, rice curry and "osushmis" as well as American salads, pies and hot dogs. Five-year-old Delores Tylen, a kindergartner at Sherman School, received a "Snow White" doll from the Tacoma Times for getting three subscriptions to the newspaper. The doll was a replica of the Walt Disney heroine in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Miss Tylen resided at 3630 No. Gove St. (T. Times 11/15/1938, p. 16).

Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Parkhurst, pioneer residents of Tacoma, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day, 1938. The Parkhursts celebrated by sitting down to a large dinner with their children and grandchildren. They were married in 1888 at Brooking, S.D., and moved to Tacoma in 1890. For the past 33 years, they have resided in the same house at 2820 So. Yakima Ave. Mr. Parkhurst retired nine years ago. He had worked for the city, Peterman Manufacturing Co., F.S.
