Real estate developer Norton Clapp towers over County Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Louise S. Taylor as the two shake hands and show off their Jubilee Hats in July of 1939. Both are members of the Gyro Club which declared the wearin' of hats to be the best way to boost the city's Golden Jubilee celebration, July 16-23, 1939. 20,000 hats of all styles, shapes and colors would flood the city so that everybody had a chance to buy one, for as low as 60 cents. The club had announced plans to put old-fashioned police wagons on the streets on July 18th to spot anyone not wearing a hat and suitable "punishment" would ensue. The local Gyro Club had many prominent members including C. Val Fawcett, Harry P. Cain, W.P. Bonney and Sheriff John Bjorklund. They are promoting the wearing of humorous hats to boost the Golden Jubilee celebration, July 16-23. The hats will be available in all colors, shapes and sizes in styles popular 50 years ago to add a little levity to the celebration. Jim Gallucci has asked the Turner Richards studio to take this photograph of his merry-go-round invention. The background will be blocked out in the photo lab so Gallucci can use it to apply for a patent. The four unidentified riders, one with a child on her lap, appear to be rotating the playground equipment from their chair-type seats by pushing and pulling on the arc-shape handles which are attached by cables to the center operating mechanism.

A child occupies one of the seats on the motionless equipment. Each seat is labelled on the back #1 -4. the machinery appears to be propelled by the riders pushing and pulling on the arched hand and foot piece in front of the seat.

The man to the left of Manning is Commander L.A. Wilcox, also a Civil War veteran, and on the right of Manning is Ruston O. Reed, Departmental Commander. The women are not identified, but are most probably spouses and descendents of Post members.The photograph is damaged on the right hand side, with a line running through part of the picture. Selection of Golden Jubilee Royalty. Amy Lou Murray, 21, (R) was selected "Miss Hostess Queen" of the Golden Jubilee celebration on July 10, 1939, at the Music Box Theater. The runner-up to the title, Margaret Franich, 23, (L) won the title of "Miss Pierce County." A decision was made to send both contestants to the Miss Washington pageant the following week, instead of the winner alone, since the voting was so close. Harry P. The royalty for Tacoma's celebration of the 1939 Washington State Golden Jubilee were selected on July 10th at the Music Box Theater. 35 girls from Pierce County entered the contest to become the celebration's "Hostess Queen." 21-year-old Gravelly Lake resident Amy Lou Murray, (at right) was chosen "Hostess Queen" and Margaret Franich, 23, was selected as "Miss Pierce County." Both winners are standing with Jubilee director (and future Mayor and Senator) Harry P. Cain. Both queens were wearing lovely evening gowns with Miss Murray's delicately covered in lace. Because the voting was so close, both women were sent to the Miss Washington competition the following week. Pausing in front of the Titus Motor Co., 618-24 Broadway on July 12, 1939, was a Cooney Transfer & Storage Co. flatbed truck with a bevy of young women aboard. They were taking part in the Rainbow Girls Parade and represented Yakima Assembly. The truck carried a basin labeled "Fountain of Youth" that was carefully tendered by the girls.

A special group of 30 Tacoma revelers, led by Art Rowe and Milt Evans, including a seven piece band, traveled to towns throughout Puget Sound region in July of 1939 to issue personal invitations to the towns' residents to attend the Washington State Golden Jubilee festivities in Tacoma. Special constable Robert Dykeman threatened to arrest the boisterous group when they parked their specially painted bus in a posted "no parking" area on Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma. In each town, they paraded through the streets and handed out flyers. The group's most memorable stop was in Seattle where they "snake danced" through downtown traffic led by the diminutive Mr. Dykeman. TPL-1372 (T. Times 7/12/1939, pg. 7)

Copy of a customer's print of the Allenmore Golf Club's "club room" on July 12, 1939. Sam Allen founded the Allenmore Golf Course in 1931. The Allenmore club house, designed by Nelson and Round, architects, was one of the most elaborate buildings of its kind in the Northwest when it was built in 1931. It had both men's and women's locker rooms and showers in the basement, and a club room, kitchen and lunch room on the first floor. On the second floor there were two bedrooms and a small apartment. The interior of the club room provided a comfortable place for golfers to relax between rounds of golf. It contained an open beamed ceiling, walls paneled in knotty West Coast Hemlock and an enormous stone fireplace fronted by padded lounge chairs. A bar and coffee counter were also amenities. The date of the original print was July 12, 1939 and the original Richards Studio number was Series A8550 image 2. The copy was made for Sam Allen on January 26, 1957. (also numbered A8550 image 2)

An unidentified waitress served ten customers from behind the lunch counter in the Allenmore Golf Course Club House on July 12, 1939. The club house, designed by Nelson and Round, architects, was one of the most elaborate buildings of its kind in the Northwest when it was built in 1931. It had both men's and women's locker rooms and showers in the basement, and a club room, kitchen and lunch room on the first floor. On the second floor there were two bedrooms and a small apartment. Nearly 1,200 representatives of the Rainbow Girls from around the state met in Tacoma from July 12 through July 15, 1939 for their 13th annual Grand Assembly. On Wednesday the 13th, members met at the Masonic Temple at 47 St. Helens Ave. and march down St. Helens and Broadway. The convention ended on Saturday with a picnic at Pt. Defiance Park. The building in the center of this photograph is the Bostwick Building, 755-71 St. Helens Ave., home, at that time, to the Kress Malted Milk Shop. (T.Times 7/13/1939 p.13)

Rainbow Girls Parade. State Convention. Costumed band aboard a mule drawn buckboard proceeds along streetcar tracks on Broadway at the corner of South 9th Street. Spectators are standing in the street watching the parade. The 13th annual Grand Assembly ran from July 12 through July 15, 1939, with nearly 1,200 girls in attendance.
