Bank of California grand reopening. A grand celebration would be held from December 11, 1968 to January 10, 1969, in the newly remodeled Bank of California building, 1011-13 Pacific Avenue. Customers and staff mingled in the banking hall on the first day of the celebration, enjoying refreshments and conducting business. New 8-foot chandeliers with Belgian glass globes would hang in the main lobby along with several side lights visible in the above December 11th photograph. Improvements to the bank would include a new drive-up teller window, walk-up teller window, two-level customer parking lot, static-free carpeting, improved lighting and expanded customer conference areas. Hinkley Co., 2611 East "D" in December of 1968.His jacket has a modified Nehru collar. Four men were photographed by the Richards Studio on behalf of the Hinkley Co. on December 11th: David Fisher, David Weller, Paul Manning and Loran Ashbaugh. This portrait was not specifically identified.

A cheerful Bank of California employee is ready to welcome visitors to the bank's grand reopening on December 11, 1968, as extensive remodeling has finally concluded. She is perched on the edge of a desk with two winged angel statues before her. The bank was offering free gifts to those opening new accounts or adding to previous ones. Bank of California grand reopening. Bank of California manager Howard O. Scott (L) shares ribbon-cutting duties with two unidentified men on December 11, 1968. The bank had just concluded a massive remodeling project at its facility on Pacific Avenue and would mark the occasion with a one-month celebration from December 11th to January 10, 1969. Herman Walker of the Hilltop Multi-Service Center watched in December of 1968 as Sherwin Williams prepared to insert a letter holding a donation to the Opportunity & Development, Inc. Christmas party for the underprivileged into the special mailbox at the Tacoma Sears store. Young Audrey Kinlow, in suit and tie, looked on. Tacomans in 1968 were asked to make Christmas happier for thousands of youngsters by contributing to the anti-poverty unit's annual Christmas party to be held on December 21st at McCarver Elementary School. Twelve special handmade mailboxes were placed in Sears, Puget Sound National Bank and Bank of Washington's main offices, and other locations . No postage was needed for these special letters; Herman Walker of the Hilltop Multi-Service Center (above) acted as Santa's special postmaster. The tug Brynn Foss assists in the launching of the tuna seiner, "Cheryl Marie," in the early morning of December 7, 1968. The 176-foot fishing boat was one of three being built at Tacoma Boatbuilding with the U.S. Maritime Commission paying 48% of the cost under the Fishing Fleet Improvement Act of 1964. Each vessel would cost $1.8 million. The "Cheryl Marie" was owned and captained by John Silveira. She would be turned over to Captain Silveira in February of 1969. On December 4, 1968, Mrs. Ann Walker and Harry Birmingham, the Tacoma Sears Department Store manager, alerted Santa to all the upcoming festivities planned for the second annual Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development Christmas party for underprivileged children. Mrs. Walker and Mr. Birmingham were committee members for the event. They showed Santa a sample of the 6,000 pledge cards being prepared to seek donations for the party. Funds from the pledge cards would provide gifts, toys, clothing, and a scrumptious turkey dinner for 3,000 youngsters on December 21st. The cards were targeted toward citizens, church groups, schools, service clubs, granges and civic organizations. Mr. Birmingham also prepared 20 special Santa mailboxes for supermarkets and other locations in Pierce County where pledge cards could be returned. Rainy days did not keep customers away from the Bowlero Lanes, 3852 Steilacoom Blvd. S.W. in Lakewood. This early December, 1968, photograph shows a partially full parking lot outside the bowling alley, and was used in a December 5, 1968, News Tribune ad. The bowling center, located near the Sears suburban store, was announcing the gala opening of a new restaurant and coffee shop. The menu featured a delicious salad bar and Henning's famous 9 oz. broiler steak for only $3.95. Bowling was still very popular in the 1960's with league results reported in the daily newspapers. Washington State Historical Society president Reno Odlin (r) extends a warm handshake of congratulations to noted sculptor James A. Wehn on November 30, 1968, at the presentation of a plaque commemorating Mr. Wehn's selection as a David Douglas Fellow. The plaque was also signed by secretary Bruce LeRoy and given to Mr. Wehn at the Top of the Ocean. The woman in the photograph is Lillian K. Wehn, his wife. South Lakeshore Christian Church. The church parking lot was empty when photographed on a rainy November day in 1968. The church, now located at 1740 So. 84th St., would be dedicated on December 1, 1968. It had previously been located at 8241 So. Park. The new 3700-square foot church building had been occupied since June and included a 200-seat sanctuary and seven classrooms. Gregg Anderson was the church's pastor. Members of Girl Scout Troup 407 and Ron Blake, retired truck mechanic, help to wrap gifts for the upcoming Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development, Inc., second annual Christmas party for underprivileged children to be held on December 21, 1968. Mr. Blake had coordinated the collection and repair of toys and games for Senior Centers, Inc., where seniors had been collecting toys for the past three months. The four Girl Scouts pictured above on November 26, 1968, were part of the 50-100 Girl Scouts who would wrap the approximately 6000 donated items. The O.D.I. had anticipated 3000 children attending the gala festivities, double from the previous year's group, but more than 5000 children would actually come to the turkey dinner and party at McCarver Elementary School, including an honored group of children from Rainier School in Buckley. Grand opening of senior housing building. The newly completed senior citizens apartment building at So. 12th and "M" was dedicated on November 24, 1968. It was built under the sponsorship of the Tacoma Housing Authority and Senior Centers, Inc. The building's community room was named in memory of the late Rev. E.B. Wilson. For 50 years Rev. Wilson had been a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and its pastor for 25 of those years. Gerrit VanderEnde, chairman of the board of Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan and chairman of the Tacoma Housing Authority, smiling held one end of the plaque honoring Rev. Wilson which will hang in the community room. The woman sharing the plaque with Mr VanderEnde is believed to be one of the two daughters of the late Rev. Wilson present at the dedication, Mrs. Sadie Armstead and Mrs. Rex Jones of Seattle. The other man in the foreground is believed to be Rev. E.S. Brazill, longtime pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church. Soccer team. Lumberman and philanthropist Ben Cheney sponsored many youth teams in many different sports. He provided the funding for uniforms so that his teams would all wear the Cheney Studs logo. This group of young soccer players was photographed on November 23, 1968, at Kandle Field. They may have been in the 10 & under division of junior soccer. Value Village exterior. Those looking for a bargain in gently used merchandise were urged to visit the Renton location of Value Village in late 1968. The thrift store was conveniently open daily 9-9 and on Sundays from 11-6. A wide variety of items could be purchased ranging from toys to furniture to appliances. Attention is drawn to the polygon-shaped overhead lighting whose angles reflect that of one of the arched windows found in the Bank of California's trust department on November 20, 1968. The golden colored carpet and oak paneling project a sense of comfortable warmth for both employees and their customers. The Bank of California had been built in 1928 and a $600,000 remodeling project beginning in the summer of 1968 installed new carpeting, chandeliers and wall paneling but left most of the unique Italian Renaissance appearance intact.
