Irene Reed, AKA Erene Scafturon, was born in 1958, in Greece. She was adopted with the name Erene Scafturon after immigrating to the United States at the age of two years by Georgia and Jim Scafturon. Erene became a naturalized citizen in 1961 at the age of three years. Tacoma recognized her citizenship with a news article, a letter from a Washington Senator, and an event. Erene graduated from Stadium High School in 1976. Erene changed her first name to Irene before she married Kevin Lee Reed on June 11, 1982. Irene and Kevin both worked at McChord Air Force Base as part of the United States Air Force. Irene received many awards during her career and for her volunteer work as a rape victim advocate. Irene and Kevin had two children: Tonia Clair Reed and Jessica Jo Reed. Irene passed away on November 29, 2010 from pancreatic cancer. Irene’s daughter, Tonia, is the one who wanted her life documented in the Community Archives Center for future generations.
