Photo of Tacoma musician Leonard Jacobsen at piano. The well known pianist had graduated from Northwestern with a B.A. in music. He had come to Tacoma as a faculty member at the College of Puget Sound (now University of Puget Sound). Mr. Jacobsen had chaired the piano department there since 1931 except for three years during WWll when he served in the U.S. Army. He had studied with David Campbell of Portland, Rudolph Ganz and Mollie Margolies at Chicago Musical College, Max Landow at Eastman School of Music and E. Robert Schmitz of San Francisco. Mr. Jacobsen had served as president of the Tacoma Music Teachers Association and was elected president of the State Teachers Assn. in 1956. He passed away in July of 1965 at age 57. Mrs. Vivienne Jensen, who lived at RD 10 in what is now Lakewood, had this photograph taken for the Fisher Flouring Mills in October of 1948. A woman, possibly Mrs. Jensen, stands in a "typical" American kitchen. She has just mixed up a batch of biscuits using Fisher's Biskit Mix. The Fisher Flouring Mills were at 1177 Dock Street.

An automobile is up on the hoist and two others are parked outside the garage. A tow truck is parked beside the hoist and another is on the other side of the lot next to McNeil's Candy Shop.

Shots of faulty valve in tank car, National Soap Company. A man has climbed a ladder to be able to get a view of the interior of this railroad tank car. The tank car has been moved to a siding track in front of a brick warehouse. A shovel and two large buckets are standing by the tank car, possibly used to catch the soap from the leaking valve and clean up spillage.

Novotney Super Market, Mr. Ole Bernstein, Novotney Super Market. Three Tacoma veterans announced their grand opening of their new business venture: groceries, produce, feed and meats to be sold at East 72nd Street and Portland Avenue. Stan and Frank Novotney, brothers, would operate the grocery, produce and feed section while Norman Berger handled the meat counter. This view shows the storefront from Portland Avenue. Aerial photographs. Pacific Match Company was located near the intersection of South Union Avenue and Center Street. The company was founded in 1924 by O.V. Snyder and F.J. Cronkhite. At this time their daily output was 50 million matches and O.V. Snyder served as president, T.J. Anderson as vice-president, and F.J. Cronkhite as secretary-treasurer. This facility is currently owned by the Tacoma Public Schools and houses the "Building & Grounds" offices. (Additional information provided by a reader)

A long line of motorists formed outside Pierce County Auditor Jack Sonntag's office October 25, 1948, to purchase special 1949 license plates. Clare Radek, cashier, is showing Mr. Sonntag license plate B 1 which had been reserved for many years for S.A. Perkins, a prominent Tacoma businessman. California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice, Mrs. Warren, and the Warren children Dorothy, Virginia, Nina Elizabeth, and Bobby, during a campaign appearence in Tacoma. Four of the Warren children accompanied their parents on a whirlwind tour of the Pacific Northwest. Hundreds of women had lined up as much as an hour before to meet the Warrens at a Republican reception. The reception was held in the Hotel Winthrop prior to Governor Warren's address at the State Armory. (TNT 10-15-48, p 1) ALBUM 2.

View of elaborate decorations above the platform. His evening address attracted overflowing crowds of over 5000 which filled the Armory to its rafters. It was the largest indoor crowd to greet Governor Warren on his tour of 31 states except for Chicago. The Dewey-Warren ticket unexpectedly lost in the 1948 elections to Truman-Barkley. California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice, and his family, with former Governor Arthur Langlie, and his family, and two drum majorettes, on platform during rally at Tacoma Armory. Governor Warren was met by an enthusiastic audience of over 5000 on October 14, 1948. He was introduced by Arthur Langlie, former governor who was running for election. 285 carload pile of phosphate at Port Piers to be shipped, Times, Corky Maybin. A huge stockpile of phosphate had been growing on Port of Tacoma property from 285 carloads of the material delivered from Idaho pending shipment to Japan. Tacoma had no bunker facilities at the time and ships scheduled to take the load were not yet in port. It required continuous day and night work of several power shovels to handle the stockpile. A man is shown giving directions to the crane operator for dumping the phosphate. Birchfield Boiler's facilities are seen in the background. (T.Times, 9/21/1948, p.1)

Richards' Building. Known as 734-36 Pacific Avenue on the Pacific Avenue side of the building and 735 Commerce Street on the upper side of the building which housed the Rudder Club in 1948. The surface of the lower story is highly reflective surrounding corrugated metal. A neon sign hangs over the doorway. The upper level of the building has arched windows and an ornamented cornice.

Wives of barbershop quartets, Barbershop Quartet, Leo Barton. Thirteen women pose on the steps of a building wearing suits, overcoats, hats, gloves and carrying their handbags. Their spouses may have been part of the second annual parade of quartets that would perform at Jason Lee School on October 23, 1948. 15 groups from the Pacific Northwest were entered in the event. Photograph ordered by Charles F.A. Mann. The "Virginia R" slid down the ways at Tacoma Boat Building Company October 2, 1948. She was completed January 29, 1949. A 108 foot tuna clipper, she was built for Captain Manuel Ribiero and Associates of San Diego. She was 108' x 26' x 13.6', had a 16 cylinder General Motors diesel engine and would carry up to 250 tons of frozen tuna. The cost was reported at $200,000. She was the 10th tuna clipper produced so far in 1948 at Tacoma Boat which had also repaired 73 craft of various kinds during the same time period. (TNT, 10/3/1948, p.C-11) TPL-8978

October 2, 1948, was opening day of the first Thom McAn Shoe Store in Washington, the second in the Pacific Northwest after Portland where Thom McAn opened a store a month earlier. Tacoma's Thom McAn's was at 958 Pacific Ave. in the Rust Building. Since it was built in 1920 the Rust Building has been home to many businesses including Lundquist-Lilly Clothing, Bruno Photographic Studio, Kress Malted Milk, and KVI Radio. (TNT, 10/7/1948, p.27)

Henry A. Wallace, center, the candidate for President of the United States in 1948 from the Progressive Party spoke on October 9th, 1948 at the Tacoma Armory. In his speech he attacked the Taft-Hartley Act and the "hot war" being waged against labor unions. While in Tacoma, he met with a group of local Progressive Party candidates including: (l to r) John Green Jr., Vera Keating, Russell H. Fluent, Henry Wallace, Rodney Peterson, Ernest T. Dorothy Ann Schneider-Glastetter. Dorothy Ann Schneider and Herman Bernard Glastetter were married September 18, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic church. Father McGreil performed the ceremony before 200 guests. Dorothy is shown wearing her wedding gown of ivory satin with a round neckline and tight girdle of crystal beads and pearls. The skirt flowed into a long train. She wears a finger tip veil of illusion caught with a tiara of pearls and is holding her bouquet of stepanotis and orchids. (T.Times, 9/18/1948, p.10)

Associated Oil Service Stations. Eldred J. Omundson and Paul L. Crosby operated the Associated station at 3102 South 12th Street. The station features the "Flying A" neon sign over its distinctive concentric rings on top of the station. The station featured Aero batteries and Federal tires. A sign affixed to a light pole in the parking area reminds customers of the Community Chest drive. The lot is fenced and two automobiles are parked near the station. TPL-1886

Fair booth, windows and overall, Carstens Packing Company, Mr. White. Carstens Tacoma location was 1623 East J Street. This window display shows meat hung in the back and how to cook meat using different methods along the front. From left to right, the meats are lamb, veal, beef rib, beef, pork exterior and pork interior. The cuts of meat shown on the raised tray in the middle are "party cuts" for special occasions.
