Engines are taken from Ford cars and trucks, then replaced with a rebuilt engine by the Titus plant, payment is made with the trade in of the old engine and cash. Testing includes the engine being spun at over 800 r.p.m. while its operation, sound and oil pressure are carefully monitored. This service is available to individual owners, garages and Ford dealers. In July 1946, as engine rebuilding demand and production increased, the Titus Motor Company had to restructure their engine rebuilding department which became Titus Manufacturing Company.This is an interior view of Titus Manufacturing Company's engine rebuilding shop. Two men are working on Ford "flathead" V-8 engines while two other men work in machine tools. The Titus shop was at 6th and Broadway. In later years Titus-Will had a body shop in the same building.

Sun Traveler is 121 feet long, 18 feet deep, has a 27 foot beam, 600 horsepower Washington Diesel engine and 3 General Motors diesel auxiliary engines, full speed is at 12 knots. This wood all-brine super tuna clipper was built by Puget Sound Boat Building. "Sun Traveler" is owned by Captain Ralph McCabe and the Sun Harbor Packing Company, both from San Diego, California. The vessel sets sail for San Diego this week (Pacific Fisherman, 1947 Yearbook Number, 1/25/48, p. 300; T.Times, 2/25/1949, p.16). TPL-8939

The East 21st Street Bridge goes over the Puyallup River and connects Lincoln Avenue. The bridge was opened in 1930 and cost approximately $150,000 to build. The bridge has two steel spans, 126 and 129 feet long; one span can be converted into a bascule lift unit, if the War Department should demand it. Lavalite Products Inc., a co-division of Mutual Industries Limited of Tacoma, was planning to make homes out of pumice in Tacoma. Pumice was the building material chosen, because it is lightweight and durable; it can be treated like lumber, nails can be driven into it. Pumice is fire resistant, vermin proof and has a high insulation value. View of two construction workers by the pumice castings, a two car garage was being constructed out of pumice, this was an experimental project to show a completed project using pumice as the building materials (T. The Gretna Victory, which was designated the Northwest Christmas Ship for this voyage, pulled out of dock in Tacoma before dawn on January 31, 1948. The 10,000 ton vessel was carrying food and clothing donations from the four Northwest states and Alaska to Bremen, Germany. The ship's holds were jammed with thousands of tons of flour, wheat, canned vegetables and meats, canned milk, clothing and shoes for the needy of Germany and Austria. One of the many local companies to donate was Brown & Haley; they contributed 150 cases of raisins. (TNT, 1/31/1948, p.1)

Mr. Lennard Anderson, director of music at Central School, was photographed reviewing some of the arrangements to be performed for students at the February 18, 1948 concert by the Pacific Northwest Symphony Orchestra. He was playing with his right hand and pointing at the music with his left hand for a group of fifth grade students at the school. The students were, L-R, Jean Needham, Francis Moore, Ryo Inouye, Darrell Strain, Jeanine Miller and Marlys Bod. The February concert would be the last of a series of concerts performed specifically for children, presented by the Tacoma Philharmonic Association and underwritten by Medosweet Dairies. Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. As of May 1948, ceramics would be featured in the annual student art exhibit. (T.Times, 5/15/1948, p.5)

Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

In December of 1947, the College of Puget Sound was selling canned milk on campus. The milk bought by students, faculty and staff would be sent to war ravaged Europe as a Christmas gift. At the milk stand, an unidentified student was selling milk to CPS President R. Franklin Thompson with other students waiting in line, cash in hand. CPS had also adopted an orphanage, De Bon-Secours, in Paris and they would be sending CARE gift packages worth $875 to the children for the holidays. (Tamanawas, 1948).

The Dempsey Lumber Company was listed in the 1942 City Directory as being located at Dempsey Mill Road and East 14th and 15th Streets. One of the remaining buildings has a tall smoke stack. ca. 1947. Plywood testing, ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. The plywood industry was one of the most rigorously self regulated businesses in America. Its own labs were constantly testing its product, plywood, for new uses and limitations. All of the testing, promotion and self regulation were performed under the banner of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. Here plywood is being tested at extremely high temperatures, also under what appears to be a weight. Wires lead from sensors to meters being monitored by the tester.

In 1947 the Snyder family gathered for their annual Christmas portrait taken at 320 Tacoma Avenue North, home of Frost and Margaret C. Snyder. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder are seated on the couch along with their two daughters and son-in-law. L-R are Margaret (Maggie) Snyder, Frost and Margaret Snyder, Catharine Snyder Kendall and her husband Robert Alden Kendall. The family pets, two dogs, have joined them as they get ready for their portrait to be taken in the living room in front of the decorated Christmas tree. Frost Snyder was a prominent Tacoma businessman and philanthropist. He was the former president of Clear Fir Lumber Co. and the Vancouver Plywood Co., and on the board at Puget Sound National Bank since 1929. He passed away in December of 1971, some three years after his wife Margaret.

In 1947 Kaiser Aluminum under the name Permanente Metals leased the aluminum plant that was built in Tacoma by the Defense Plant Corporation. The plant had been built to provide aluminum for the war effort. With the end of the war, there was a surplus of aluminum and the plant had been closed. In October of 1947, Tacoma once again began to produce aluminum, but with the war over new products were created and entered the market including - safety wear. These safety shoes were manufactured with Kaiser Aluminum. TPL-9364

Iceskaters Patsy Hamm and Jack Boyle at Lakewood Ice Arena, Mrs. Clarence Boyle. Patsy Hamm and Jack Boyle are caught mid-air during a leap from the ice wearing skating costumes. Patsy and Jack, representing the Tacoma Figure Skating Club, won the Northwestern State jumping pairs in the tournament at Lakewood Arena, thereby qualifying for the Pacific Coast championship finals at Seattle.
