ca. 1979. The Carlton Hotel, circa 1979. The Carlton was built in 1909 by Anton Huth, from a design by architect C.A. Darmer. The hotel was also home to the Barbary Coast restaurant.

ca. 1979. The Japanese Language School, Nihon Go Gakko, aka Tacoma Yochiyen, at 1715 Tacoma Ave. So., circa 1979. In 1979, the building was home to the Washington Karate Association. The structure was built in 1921 and designed by Heath & Gove, Arch. The building became Tacoma's processing center during the World War II relocation of Japanese Americans. It was placed on the City and National registry in the 1980's. The land was purchased by the University of Washington-Tacoma in the late 90's and the dilapidated building was razed.

ca. 1979. Antique barber chair in an unidentified barbershop, circa 1979. Decorations on the wall feature barber poles and the slogan "Ask for Wildroot." Wildroot Cream Oil hair tonic was preferred by barbers and comic strip character Dick Tracy. By the late seventies when this picture was taken, these items would already be collector's items.

ca. 1979. The Moorish building behind the billboards is 616 Saint Helens Ave, home in the early 1940's to the Anson C. Hart Co., Packard Sales & Service. In this picture, taken around 1979, part of his name shows on the side of the building. It is partially masked by two billboards, one for Canadian Club and one for Tropical Blend suntan oil. In 1979, this address was home to Bank & Office Interiors, an office furniture store.

ca. 1979. Travelers patiently wait in the lobby of the Greyhound Bus Terminal in 1979. The bus station was built in 1959 from an "ultra modern" design by Decker, Christenson & Kitchin of Seattle. By 2000, the ultra modern building was considered an eyesore and it was demolished.
