The Tacoma/Pierce County League of Garden Clubs met in December of 1945 to make Christmas decorations to be used at Madigan Hospital. Their goal was to make 500 decorations. The all-day work program was held at the Red Cross building at 702-04 Broadway. Members were asked to bring evergreen clippings from their own gardens and their own pruning clippers. Holly was requested as well as Christmas tree trimmings and pine cones. (T.Times, 12/19/1945, p.10-article)

A young woman from the Red Cross with two baskets meets troops coming home from the Pacific through the Port of Tacoma. Troops are smiling reaching into one of the baskets for something to eat. Other troops in the background can be seen drinking milk which was also given out by the Red Cross. The Tacoma area was suffering under record low temperatures this holiday season and the Red Cross volunteer has worn heavy clothes to try to keep warm.

With the end of WWII in the Pacific, over 16,000 servicemen and women were brought to Tacoma during December of 1945 on troop ships. Each ship was met by Red Cross volunteers handing out milk, doughnuts and other items to the troops. Mr. Percy G. Ball was an architect in Tacoma, his work can be seen at University of Puget Sound, Tacoma Churches and many residential homes. Percy Ball was the architect in charge of the additions and changes at Ozanam Home for the Aged, located in the old St. Joseph's Hospital facilities. The home first opened in 1926.

Coons & Wasser, picture of truss. This elevated view shows a building under construction providing a view of the trusses used for the roof. The system allows a large interior free of supports. A Texaco gasoline tank sits just beyond the new building. The building in front, currently "Auto Parts", was formerly Ben's Truck Parts.

In December of 1945 Mayor Harry P. Cain returned to Tacoma to once again take up his mayoral duties. In 1943 he had taken a leave of absence from his elected office to enter the Army as a major. He left the city in the capable hands of C. Val Fawcett, who had previously served as Commissioner of Finance. By the end of the war Mayor Cain had risen in rank to Lieutenant Colonel. Once back in office he served as mayor of Tacoma until June 15, 1946, when he chose to run for the U.S. Senate. Album 13.

Mayor Harry P. Cain takes delivery of his all new 1946 Pontiac in early February, 1946, from Tacoma Auto Sales, who ordered this for publicity. Tacoma Auto Sales, located on Commerce St., provided sales and service for Pontiacs and Cadillacs. ALBUM 13.

Red Cross was offering a master training class for instructors in the home nursing course. Instructors were continuously offering the Home Nursing classes to anyone interested in learning to care for sick people at home. Red Cross also had their yearly fund drive going on during this time.
