ca. 1937. Exterior elevation of the Rust Building, a multi-story office building, at So. 11th Street and Pacific Avenue. The Rust Building is named for its builder William R. Rust. It was designed by the architectural firm of Sutton, Whitney and Dugan. The twelve story building opened in 1920. Since 1986, it has been known as the Seafirst Center. Rust by Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, Architects, 1920. It was known as the Townsend building from 1929- 1931. It was remodeled by Seafirst bank in 1986 and renamed the Seafirst Center.

Young men "chow down" in the Camp Murray Mess Hall during the July 1934 Citizen's Military Training Camp (CMTC). at Camp Murray. They sit at picnic style tables eating, among other things, mashed potatoes and gravy, bread and pie. The camp was a combined training for the CMTC, ROTC and Officers' Reserve Corps. 68 of the 127 boys in CMTC were in camp for the first time. They were assigned to Company K in the infantry. The remainder were divided into Red, White and Blue groups in infantry and field artillery. The boys came from a radius of 100 miles of Ft. Lewis. The ROTC was composed of 79 students from Pacific Northwest Universities. (T. Times 7/13/1934, pg. 1)

Troop B demonstrates some trick riding at Camp A. H. Hankins, the 1935 Washington National Guard encampment at Camp Murray. Three soldiers are head and shoulders above the rest on a single horse as they pose one atop another. Troop B is actually designated as the Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard and it is the oldest military organization in the state. Around 8,000 citizen soldiers from the Northwest took part in the 15 day training. (T. Times 6/12/1935, pg. 1)

In January of 1936, two McLean's Lyon Van Lines trucks delivered 64 new, crated Magic Chef gas stoves to the Lauan Apartments, 818 So. 11th St. Men were photographed moving the crated stoves. This photograph, with a little editing, was used in an advertisement for the Washington Gas & Electric Co. "Magic Chef" was superimposed on the van where "Lyon" is in the picture. McLean's was located at 109 So. 15th St. (WSHS) (TDL 1/12/1936, pg. 6-B)

On the last day of January 1936, workers from McLean's, Tacoma operators of Lyon Van Lines, were busy moving new Magic Chef gas ranges into the Rialto Apartments. The apartment owners had ordered 50 of the new ranges. 34 of the crated stoves were lined up on 9th Street. The moving truck is parked on hill with its door open to the building entrance. The photograph was used in an advertisement for Washington Gas & Electric Co., promoting gas for cooking. Photograph ordered by Mr. Goff. (WSHS) (TDL 2/2/1936, pg. B-6)

ca. 1939. Actress and comedienne Lucille Ball rides in the back seat of a chauffer driven, open automobile in a field parade at a sports stadium. The event was perhaps a San Diego Padres baseball game which was held during the California World's Fair in 1939. Man beside Miss Ball and woman in front seat have not been identified.

Mayor Val Fawcett gives a warm welcome to Al Thrall (L) and Richard Williams visiting (Old) City Hall in the spring of 1947. Quick thinking on the part of the two 17-year-olds during the March 29th Daffodil Parade prevented injury and disruption of the annual event. Richard Williams, driving a float with Al Thrall assisting, warned the packed crowds and managed to stop his runaway float when its brakes failed. (T.Times 4-1-47, p. 7) ALBUM 14.

Two unidentified Tacoma police officers, including one who appears to be a motorcycle officer in leather jacket and boots, examine the dummy that was thrown off the 11th Street bridge on February 7, 1940. The "suicide" attempt by "Dummy Doe," the name given to the dummy, was apparently a well planned prank by several high school students. "Dummy Doe" was placed in solitary confinement at police headquarters in hopes that someone would step forward to claim him. (T.Times 2/9/1940 p.1-article)

ca. 1946. Portrait of actress Arlene Dahl. This may have been taken during her April, 1946, visit to Tacoma. She had stopped to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Dahl, on her way to Hollywood. Although primarily raised in Minnesota, Miss Dahl had many relatives in Tacoma, Parkland and Seattle. A former model, Miss Dahl would go on to appear in many motion pictures including "Three Little Words" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." ALBUM 5.

ca. 1940. Prosecutor Thor Tollefson, left in photo, listens to testimony. The man beside him is not identified. Mr. Tollefson was the Pierce County Prosecutor from 1938-1946 before he made a successful run for the U.S. House of Representatives. He served from 1947-1965. Mr. Tollefson passed away on December 30, 1982, at the age of 81.

Ex-Mayor J. J. Kaufman, 1941 President of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, receives a framed check and an alarm clock as his term expires during the 57th annual dinner meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on December 29, 1941, held at the Hotel Winthrop. Mayor Harry Cain (not pictured) earlier had presented the alarm clock to Mr. Kaufman because the chamber president had slept through one of chamber manager Thad Stevenson's sales talks in a steamship company's San Francisco office.
