ca. 1937. Independent Bible Church, circa 1937. The pastor of the church was the Rev. Roy T. Brumbaugh. This new church was created when Rev. Brumbaugh split from the First Presbyterian Church. Four hundred and sixty-five members signed up with Dr. Brumbaugh to join the Independent Church. He typified his members as "fundamentalists" who opposed the organization of the Presbyterian Church. The Bible Church met at the Scottish Rite Temple, 5 So. G St., which it purchased in 1937. In 1943, the church dropped the Independent and became the Tacoma Bible Church. (filed with Argentum)

ca. 1935. Throughout the mid-1930s, Yelm's irrigation water system was subsidized by the Works Progress Administration, WPA. The government furnished labor and much of the lumber for flumes to irrigate farm land. Ross Houston had a contract in 1935 to install a wooden water flume on this farm near Yelm. At the same time, his Houston Treated Wood and Fabricated Wood Products were installing prefabricated wooden street gutters in Tacoma.

On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times Spring Fashion section hit the newstands, featuring two couples modeling the latest in suits and coats from Klopfenstein's, Inc. Gathered around the piano at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit and Irene Tollefson, also in Rothmoor. On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times ran their Spring Fashion section, featuring two couples modeling the newest styles of suits and coats from Klopfenstein's Inc. Pictured left to right at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks, of Dallas Texas, in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit, Irene Tollefson in Rothmoor and Vic Vine in Hart Schaffner. In November of 1937, Arnold Leverenz was photographed playing the organ at Ted Brown Music Co., 1121-23 Broadway. Ted Brown was in business at this location from 1934-2001. Mr. Leverenz was a noted local musician. He provided background music at the Pantages during the silent film era and was a featured performer at Steve's Gay Nineties in the 1950's. The unidentified young women in this photograph from June, 1938 are probably the drill team from the Knute Rockne Lodge, Daughters of Norway. Over 1,000 members of the Sons of Norway and the Daughters of Norway, representing lodges in Washington, Oregon,California, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia, attended the four day convention in Tacoma from June 23 - 28. The drill team members, and their little "mascot," are attired in jodhpurs and holding what appear to be polo mallets. The male team leader in the center is wearing a United States Marines uniform. Hatasu Dancers, June of 1938. Large group of women in hall, attired in matching costumes. The Hatasu Temple was a group name used by Daughters of the Nile. Queen Hatasu was an Egyptian monarch. The Daughters of the Nile are the female offshoot of the Shriners, or Masons. The group was founded in 1913 in Seattle. The Hatasu #1 Temple still meets in Seattle. The annual session of the Supreme Temple of the Daughters of the Nile was held in Tacoma June 6-10, 1938. It was the first convention of this group to be held in Tacoma since 1925. Sam Rabstoff poses with his prize catch, a 21 1/2 lb. steelhead trout caught in the Clearwater River in the Quinault district. Gretchen Kunigk (later Fraser) and Herb Clark pose in front of crouching football players at the College of Puget Sound in a September, 1938, fall fashion advertisement for Klopfenstein's. ca. 1939. Studio portrait of Nepean C. Garrison, noted model shipbuilder, ca. 1939, when he was applying for citizenship. Mr. Garrison had been building ship models since 1929 when the Great Depression struck and carpentry and roadwork opportunities dried up. He was a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and went to sea at an early age, becoming the master of a fishing schooner when he was just 15. Later he served aboard deep water square-riggers. He left the sea and came to Tacoma ca. 1903. He had not forgotten about his younger days in Halifax and his time at sea, however, and now having more time on his hands began carving and whittling models of ships he had known in the past. His reproductions of the clippers, schooners, barks and full-rigged ships, numbering about 30, became well-known and exhibited many times. One of his best known works was a model of the "Flying Cloud," the clipper that had set a record for the passage around the Horn on her maiden voyage. Mr. Garrison worked as a rigger during WWll and died in 1953.

New GMC Truck for Ohanapecosh Hot Springs, Mt. Rainier National Park, at Packwood. Probably taken behind Tacoma General Motors Truck Company, 307 Puyallup Ave. In 1924, N.D. Towers and Dr. A.W. Bridge constructed a small hotel and two bathhouses at a U.S. Forest Service campsite known as Ohanapecosh. The resort continued to develop and expand through the administration of the Ohanapecosh Hot Springs Co. until the contract was terminated in the early 1960s. By 1967, all of the resort facilities had been dismantled and the hot springs were allowed to return to their natural, pre-excavation condition.
