Three unidentified Tacoma Camp Fire Girls were photographed on March 8, 1947 as they boarded a chartered North Coast Transportation bus to a day trip to Olympia. About 200 Camp Fire Girls and their chaperones were taking part in the special "Going Places" visit to the state capitol. The "Going Places" project was organized to celebrate the birthday of the Camp Fire Girls organization. The Olympia trip was planned to teach the girls about good government. The participants were scheduled to eat their bag lunches in the capitol cafeteria. (T. Times, 3/5/47, p. 16).

Benbow Lakes Resort was located on Mountain Highway between Tacoma and Mount Rainier in Pierce County. They had five hundred acres and five lakes and offered "Nature's Wonderland". A true "Easter Parade" of fashions was on display at the afternoon tea and fashion show sponsored by the Girls Club of Stadium High School and the P.T.A. in March of 1947. On March 6, 1947, the audience at the Annual Elks Club Father-Daughter Program watched in awe as a local family of acrobats performed a series of stunts. Held in the Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, a large number of club members and their daughters and granddaughters performed in the program. The show's main attraction was a six year old pianist. (T. Tacoma Council of Churches Youth Center was first used as the United Service Center for servicemen. After the war ended in 1945, the Tacoma Council of Churches Youth Council decided a modern youth center was an ideal option for the conversion of the servicemen's center. Reed's Cabinet & Fixture Shop had moved into a larger building in 1946. They took over a fifty by ninety foot, government surplus warehouse, located on Center Street. Reed's specialized in the designing and engineering of business fixtures, display cases and other commercial fixtures. On May 15, 1947, employees of the Carstens Packing Company gathered around their new Kartridg-Pack machine. Some of the women were working on the sausage packing line, while other employees were admiring the end product. The new machinery packed the wieners side-by-side, bound together by paper loops instead of the usual method of stringing them tail-to-tail. The Kartridge-Pack had the ability to pack 3,200 pounds of wieners per 8 hour shift. (T.Times, 5/21/1947, p.7)

Steps leading from the patio to the lawn are nearly hidden by the bountiful rhododendron blooms. The mansion was originally known as "Villa Carman" changed to "Madera" in 1939. It is now the home of television actress, Linda Evans.

This group of Shipmates are all wearing the latest summer "Sea and Sun" fashions, only available at Fisher's Department Store. Fisher's was about to have a grand opening on their third floor featuring the new "Fashion Center". Tacoma Yacht Club Shipmates and Fishers hosted the style show at the Top of the Ocean, where more than 718 people attended (T. Times, 4/19/47, p. 13).

This photograph was taken in 1947 shortly after the Tacoma Fire Dept. bought three new fire trucks from Tacoma Truck and Tractor Company. The Mack 1000 gpm pumper is parked in front of Fire Station No. 2, at 2701 Tacoma Avenue So. Fire Station No. 2 was built in 1907 from a plan by Paul Bergfeld, and was added to the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1986.

Deep Sea has trawl gear of the Icelandic type, with a high throat, designed to take free swimming fish of the cod and pollock type, in addition to bottom dwelling species such as King crabs, sole and flounders. The 140 foot trawler, built by Birchfield Boiler, Inc., will offer her owners, Deep Sea Trawlers, a complete fishing, packing and freezing plant. "Deep Sea" will be able to accommodate thirty two fishermen (Pacific Fisherman, July 1947, p. 40-41).

On March 16, 1947 the temperature in Tacoma reached a record high of 67 degrees. Summer-like weather had children and adults out and about enjoying the sunshine. Paul Gerber, 11, and several of his friends, thinking it felt like swimming-hole weather, went to Hoodlum Lake near Franklin Elementary School. Paul spied a "Danger" sign that was posted during the winter months, when the lake is partially frozen over, floating in the water and used it as a raft. (T. Times, 3/17/47, p. 1).

The Young Men's Business Club Auxiliary helped raise money for new high school band uniforms for Stadium, Lincoln and Bellarmine in April 1947. The "Band Aid " committee distributed collection/donation bottles throughout Tacoma in cooperation with local businesses.
