These women were chosen as officers of the Rebekahs, auxiliary womens' organization of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, during the Rebekahs' annual three-day session held in Tacoma in early June of 1933. From left to right are: Mrs. E.B. North of Tacoma, treasurer; Mrs. Edith Osborn of Yakima, vice-president; Mrs. Bernice Hornibrooke of Vancouver, warder; Mrs. N. M. Knoff of Seattle, secretary; and Mrs. Maude Boone of Puyallup, president of the district association. The ladies were photographed in front of the I.O.O.F. Temple at Sixth and Fawcett. About 2,500 Odd Fellows and Rebekahs had arrived in Tacoma on Saturday, June 3rd for their annual session of the grand lodge, grand encampment and Rebekah assembly. ca. 1952. The cornerstone was laid in February, 1924, for Jones Hall on the College of Puget Sound campus. The building was designed by architects Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, who later designed several other campus structures. View of ivy-covered Jones Hall showing exterior and main entrance, the first building constructed on the college's North 15th and Warner site. The campus was opened in September, 1924. The school was known as the College of Puget Sound until 1960 when it was renamed the University of Puget Sound. TPL-8185

A large sign makes it adamantly clear that Tacoma City Light did not pay for the electricity used for the outdoor Christmas street decorations in the South Tacoma business district in December of 1952. The South Tacoma Business Club paid for the private power. Crouching next to a portable high voltage generator are Steve Pease and C.A. Erdahl, commissioner of public utilities. ca. 1935. Maccabees Orchestra, circa 1935. Woman sitting at piano holding banjo, three men standing in row with drums, guitar and saxophone. To the left is a xylophone and in front of the drums is a violin. The Maccabees were a fraternal and benevolent organization for men, providing monetary benefits in the case of sickness, disability or death. It ceased as a fraternal organization in 1962, becoming a life insurance company. (filed with Argentum)

According to the 1932 City Directory, Virges Drug Co. had multiple locations at 914 and 958 Pacific Ave. and 785 Broadway. ca. 1936. Doctors and attendants in Tacoma General Hospital operating room, circa 1936. Large windows and skylights supplied natural light; which, along with the operating lights, flooded the operating table. Several large tanks, right, supplied oxygen and probably gaseous anesthesia. A curved stand held operating instruments and several bowls sat on stands. By the mid 1930's, the new Heidbrink anesthetic machine and uniform sterilization of instruments and equipment had reached Tacoma. (filed with Argentum)

Bedroom with twin beds, possibly in the Tacoma General Hospital nurses' quarters, circa 1936. For 85 years, from 1895-1980, Tacoma General ran its own nurse training program. The nurses studied for three years, emerging as Registered Nurses. In its years of operation, Tacoma General graduated 2200 nurses.(filed with Argentum)

On Friday evening, January 8, 1937, twenty five students in the Tacoma General Hospital nursing program took their first step toward graduating as nurses. The women received their caps, signifying that they had completed the preliminary four month basic course in theory and practice. The students will receive their full graduation honors when they complete their studies in May of 1939. Photograph of nurses congratulating one another. ca. 1936. Exterior view of Tacoma General Hospital with an ambulance parked in front, ca. 1936. The original $100,000 hospital, front, opened in 1915. It was designed by the architectural firm of Heath and Gove. It had a capacity for 150 beds and was virtually fireproof.
