ca. 1926. In 1926 a new Jubilee Moon 6-60 from the Bye Thompson Motor Sales Company located at 3320 South G Street took on the steep K Street hill. The K Street hill between Center Street and South 27th had such a steep grade that it was used as a testing ground for the power of new cars. The Jubilee Moon was produced to celebrate 20 years of manufacturing by the Moon Motor Co. (1905-1929) of St. Louis, MO. The car, which sold for under $1,000, was reported to be of European design adapted to American traffic needs. The Moon and Diana motor car agent in Tacoma was the Bye Thompson Motor Sales Company; Bye Thompson was president of the company which sold and serviced the vehicles. This steep, rugged portion of K St. closed about 1960. Holy Rosary Church can be seen in the background. ca. 1927. Whippet Automobile on Coast to Coast trip in front of Manley Motor Company Inc. Manley was the official dealer for Overland and Willys-Knight automobiles. The Whippet automobile was manufactured from 1926-1931 by Willys Overland. The Whippet was an affordable vehicle designed to compete with Ford's Model T. (filed with Argentum)

From July 26-30, 1925, the Washington State College extension service sponsored their second annual vacation camp for Western Washington farm women at Lincoln High School. More than 50 women were enrolled, each representing a home economics club or community organization. The women took courses in home management, nutrition and the making of wearing apparel. Here, six women in aprons intently watched a teacher crack an egg in what appears to be a baking lesson. On the counter are three bowls, milk, eggs and the baked finished product. Lincoln High School was strictly off limits to men folk during camp. The women bunked on cots set up in the gym. They attended classes during the four days, two a day each about 1 hour 45 minutes long, but also had plenty of time for swimming, walking, dancing and play. Dressed in then fashionable bathing suits, employees of the National Bank of Tacoma held their annual picnic at the DeKoven Inn on the east side of Lake Steilacoom in August of 1925. The National Bank of Tacoma was one of the oldest banks in Tacoma. Although the DeKoven Inn, which previously had been a boys' school, was destroyed by a fire on August 2, 1925 the resorts dance and banquet hall was saved. It became the new Inn and much of the property formerly belonging to the Inn was subdivided and sold. (WSHS- negative A916-0) (TNT 8/13/1925, pg. 23-article on Inn)

ca. 1926. Beutel Business College. Simulated tellers wickets, adding machines , stools. Beutel, founded in 1887, was the oldest commercial school in Tacoma. It offered classes in accounting, typing, shorthand, and other subjects needed to find placement in the business world. (filed with Argentum)

This was how the new Whistle Bottling Company factory, built for the Cammarano Brothers by Mcdonald & Michael contractors and located at 2314-18 A Street, appeared in August of 1926. At that time, the 5 year old company was moving to its new white $50,000 modern concrete plant. The two-story, 75 x 100 foot building was three times larger than the company's previous location at 301 East 25th. The new plant could turn out 30,000 complete bottles of "soda pop" a day: manufactured, bottled, capped and labeled. The company bottled Whistle, Nu-grape, Hires, Green River and others. The Cammarano Brothers, Phil, James, William and Ed, were self-made men; progressing from odd jobs to being the heads of their own factory. (filed with Argentum) (TDL 8/22/1926, pg. Ca. 1927. Brand new Puyallup Avenue bridge, completed in December 1926 and dedicated in January 1927. The other bridge visible on the other (east) side is the Tacoma-Seattle Interurban bridge. The interurban ceased operations in December of 1928. Additional information provided by reader. (WSHS)

ca. 1926. In 1926, this photograph was taken of South 11th Street between Tacoma Ave So. and So. Fawcett. The businesses are, left to right, the Pleasant Corner Candy Store, an upholstery shop, Clinton's Pianos at 506 So. 11th, the Pok-A-Dot-Pup Sandwich Shop and an unidentified storefront. The tall building in the back is 1111 Tacoma Ave. So., at this time occupied by A. Gehri & Co. and Erickson Bro. This building is still across the street from the Tacoma Public Library. However, the top floors have now been removed. (WSHS)

On a sunny April day in 1966, an unidentified cowpoke, arms akimbo, was ready for action on the cement driveway in front of one of the new houses in the Heritage West housing development. Wearing a large (toy) pistol, he is standing near a sign indicating septic tanks were prohibited in the Heritage West neighborhood of homes. Presumably modern sewer lines were being installed. This little boy was used in a Heritage West ad, sans background, in the May 6, 1966, News Tribune. Heritage West was a development of new homes ten minutes northeast of Tacoma that was developed by Evergreen Builders of Tacoma. It was off South 320th just west of The Commons at Federal Way (formerly Seatac Mall). Photograph ordered by Evergreen State Builders. (TNT Ad May 5, 1966, p. 22)

ca. 1967. Two boats under construction. Work continues on two Tacoma Boatbuilding projects at the Port Industrial Yard in the latter part of 1967. Both are 177-foot tuna seiners and built of steel. The vessel in the rear is believed to be the "Bold Venture" which will be launched on January 20, 1968. ca. 1907. Copy of customer print. Composite picture where President Teddy Roosevelt has been inserted to stand next to Northwest pioneer Ezra Meeker before the old State Department's "War and Navy" building in Washington D.C., upon the conclusion of Meeker's reenactment of his 1852 journey via covered wagon on the Oregon Trial. Signs decorating the old prairie schooner indicate that Meeker had left Puyallup on January 29, 1906, and arrived in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 5, 1907, a distance of 2,610 miles. Accompanied by his faithful dog "Jim," Edward Songer and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Goble, the 76-year-old Meeker and his yoke of oxen and wagon were a throwback to the days of westward expansion. Mr. and Mrs. Goble are believed to be included in the above photograph. Meeker sought preservation of the Oregon Trail route as an important part of our nation's history. He stopped at many towns along the way to raise money for memorials to the Trail and even received a special permit to drive his team down New York City's famous Broadway. Meeker did meet up with President Roosevelt after he decided to continue his journey to Washington D.C., arriving there on November 29, 1907. The president was interested in preserving the Trail and eventually Congress would appropriate $50,000 to mark the trail. Photograph ordered by the Washington State Historical Society. Destroyer deckhouse. Pictured in early 1970 are three all-aluminum deckhouse sections from Tacoma Boatbuilding for a new-class Navy destroyer being built in Seattle by Lockheed Ship Building and Construction Co. The sections were delivered to Lockheed via barge in early March of 1970. Tacoma Boatbuilding was awarded a subcontract to build deckhouses for four destroyers. The above aluminum sections were the first to be completed with the two remaining sections scheduled for completion in May. The five sections will weigh a total of 300,000 pounds. The total contract is expected to be completed in February of 1971. (TNT 3-8-70, D-12)

Boat construction. The YP-669 patrol boat, used for training, was being completed at Peterson Boatbuilding in October of 1971. Peterson's, along with Tacoma Boatbuilding who had built the hull, was under contract with the US Navy to build probably the last of the Navy's wooden ships. The YP-669 was the first of the 80-foot boats to be completed. It had an 18-foot beam, wooden hull and aluminum deckhouse. (TNT 11-22-70, D-14 article)
