On December 3, 1926, a bevy of beautiful Rhodes sales girls swooped down on the annual Tacoma Poultry Show, selected their favorite prize winning poultry and literally took them for a ride. The ride was in a new Buick, provided by Mueller- Harkins Motor Co.; proving that the Buick's smooth ride would not ruffle the feathers of the favored fowl. Pictured left to right are Christine and Sallie Jean Collier (not associated with Rhodes), Zelma Metzker, Neva Reed, Evangeline (Vangie) Harrod, Sybil Lea, Grace Moore, Isabel Kearns, Irene Ratcliffe, Lucille Vosberg, Gladys Rodside and Florence Oberg. On December 3, 1926, a quartet of salesgirls from the Rhodes Brothers department store departed from their usual duties to pose with four of the prize winning chickens from the 29th Annual Tacoma Poultry Show. The girls are, left to right, Isabel Kearns with a Rhode Island Red Cockerel, Irene (Iva) Ratcliffe with a Buff Orpington Cockerel, Evangeline (Vangie) Harrod with a white Wyandotte hen and Grace Rutchoe (identified as Grace Moore in same paper) with a Buff Plymouth pullet. The photographs from this publicity stunt were to be shown around the country to promote Tacoma. 1926 exterior view of the Allen C. Mason Intermediate School. Named after a Tacoma pioneer, lawyer, real estate developer and former school principal, Mason Intermediate (later renamed Mason Junior High and Mason Middle School) opened for classes on February 1, 1926. It was also the opening day for the new Captain Robert Gray and Franklin B. Gault Intermediate Schools. Mason Intermediate was the fifth of the six intermediate schools built with funds from a 1923 bond issue. Students were drawn from several north end elementary schools including Washington, Jefferson, Lowell and Point Defiance. Portables were deemed necessary within four years of the school's opening due to the burgeoning enrollment. The school underwent additions and improvements over the years until a new Mason School was constructed in 2003 at 3901 N. 28th. G47.1-055; BU-11, 426 (Olsen: For The Record, p. 133-34)

Mason Junior High School (Tacoma); Public schools--Tacoma--1920-1930;

This is the Dash Point School located at 6546 Dash Point Blvd N.E. as pictured on December 18, 1926. Residents had finally after many years succeeded in having a permanent school built in 1924 at this location. It was a two-room stucco and tile building with a large basement and playroom for its elementary school children. A five-room addition was dedicated in November of 1958. In 1973-74 the school closed due to declining enrollment. Four years later it was reopened and remained open until 1993. It was added to the State Register on December 2, 1996. 1926 exterior of the Morton M. McCarver Intermediate School. McCarver was Tacoma's third intermediate school and opened its doors to 600 students in late 1925. It was named for Tacoma founder and one of the school district's first directors, General Morton Matthew McCarver. The Gothic-style building was designed by architects Hill & Mock who also designed the Allen C. Mason Intermediate School. It was renamed McCarver Junior High in 1928 and added elementary school classes in 1938 when Lincoln Elementary School closed. This is the winding Gig Harbor-Purdy Highway as pictured on December 26, 1926. There are trees and brush on both sides of the narrow roadway. Safety railings are intermittently placed along parts of the paved highway. G72.1-155

This is how the Gig Harbor-Purdy highway looked like the day after Christmas in 1926. The narrow roadway was winding and drivers would need to keep alert. Although there are power or phone lines visible, there were probably no modern street lights. Thick woods are on both sides. G72.1-156

Cars would need a little extra "oomph" to climb this portion of the Gig Harbor-Purdy highway in December of 1926. The narrow road is steep and does not appear to be paved. Remnants of snow cake the sides of the road. G72.1-147

When approaching the Purdy Bridge in late December of 1926, a vehicle would need to travel on a gravel-like road carved out of thick woods. Log railings flank the roadway. TPL-1390; G72.1-150

Mt. Tacoma (Rainier) is barely visible in the background as boats bob along the Gig Harbor waterfront during the Christmas season in 1926. Harbors in this area are protected making waters calm. TPL-690; G72.1-126

This view of fishing boats entering Gig Harbor's protected waters is very similar to a previous Boland photograph, B16128, and taken on the same December day in 1926. Mount Tacoma (Rainier) stands out clearer from the hovering gray clouds. The photograph has been damaged with white spots. TPL-874; G72.1-125B

This is possibly a view of Bremeton's business district taken across the water from the Port Orchard side in late December of 1926. Power lines cross the narrow road leading down to the water. G72.1-057

Several fishing boats stream into the calm waters of Gig Harbor's protected waterfront on December 26, 1926. Mt. Tacoma (Rainier) blends with the cloudy skies beyond the darkened forests. TPL-691; G72.1-125A

ca. 1927. This English cottage style home was built in 1922 for George C. Barlow who named it "Prospect Hill." In 1926, Mr. Barlow was the manager of C.S. Barlow & Sons Inc. The home was designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and the Ketner Bros. Co. was the general contractor. (WSHS)

ca. 1927. The Hutchinson Apartments, 3910 So. Yakima Ave., were built in 1926 by S.G. Hutchinson. The three-story building had a brick facade and arched entryway. (WSHS)

ca. 1927. A range and oven stand on spindly legs in this kitchen in the Biltmore Apts., circa 1927. The Biltmore apartments were located at 801-07 No. "I" St. Although built in 1889 by George Sumner, they were not named "Biltmore" until 1926. The building was designed by F.A. Sexton. The stove was manufactured by LH Electrics. (WSHS)
