ca. 1937. The Hopper-Kelly Company service crew was photographed in 1937 standing in front of their newly modernized and expanded store at 1145 Broadway. Pictured left to right are Harry Warner (service manager), Walter Reynolds, Ed Michajla, Jr., Ed Michajla, Sr., Clair Sherrod, Hi MacPherson, C.B. Rees and Harry Robertson. The store served as the area headquarters for Stewart-Warner, Potter and Grunow refrigerators (featured in display window.) The company sold household appliances, such as washers, ironers and refrigerators, as well as radios and pianos. President of the company was C. Galvin Hopper. (TDL 2/14/1937, pg. A-7)

ca. 1937. "Mooring mast" type- radio transmission tower for KMO Radio at Fife. Photograph was taken in the fields at Fife circa 1937. This photo is looking towards the northwest. The actual KMO station building was near and faced Highway 99. The field in the background was owned by Colonial Gardens, an Italian cooperative produce farm, at the time this photo was taken. The house to the left of the tower, but in the background, was owned by Angelo and Jennie Bevegni; Angelo was apparently the main field boss with Colonial Gardens. The house in the background and to the left was owned by Martin and Mary Kaelin. The buildings between their home and that of the Bevegni home were barns used for the Kaelin dairy. Wapato Creek served as a boundary primarily north and south (at this point) between the Colonial Gardens property and the properties of the Kaelin and Bevegni families.

ca. 1937. In 1937, Ed Griffin (left), owner of Griffin Fuel, and an unidentified man were photographed with a pair of English Mastiffs. One of the enormous dogs has its paws on Griffin's shoulders. At this time, Griffin owned the only mastiffs in the Northwest. In September of 1936, his female "Broomcourt Nell" had given birth to 10 puppies. The champion mastiff had been bred with "Roxbury Boy." The result was seven female pups and 3 male.

ca. 1937. Ed Griffin, of Griffin Fuel Co., and his sister-in-law, Bea (Mrs. Frederick) Griffin, admire the English mastiff puppies born in September of 1936. The puppies were sired by Griffin's Champion mastiff "Broomcourt Nell" and "Roxbury Boy." There were originally ten puppies, although there appear to be only 9 in the picture.

The 1937 City Directory lists this location as vacant; in 1938, it is listed as Bert & Ray Service Station, owned by Bert Nielson & Rayfield Pierantozzi. Light snow on ground, large Victorian house and smaller one. Directional signs put up by AAA point to "National Park 54" (Mount Rainier Nat'l. Park 54 miles) and Tacoma "City Center 2."

ca. 1937. Man standing next to large coal truck in front of Griffin Fuel Company office building. Snoqualmie Falls Power Company Transfer House, 250 So. 19th St., in background. Griffin Fuel began business in 1889 as a horse drawn moving company for any kind of commodities. By 1904, Griffin Fuel had moved to this location and focused in on the fuel business. They delivered and sold fuel in the forms of oil, coal, wood and sawdust. Pat Cardin, recently appointed manager of Griffin burner & diesel oil business, helped Ed Griffin design this new style oil tank delivery truck. Its design included a centrifugal silent pump.
