ca. 1937. Ed Mayer visits the "mother of Hoodlum Lake" at the front door of her old wooden house circa 1937. The woman has been identified by her great-granddaughter as Eva Lena Tuel Potter. Eva Potter was the great, great granddaughter of Levi Scott, one of the original Oregon pioneers who traveled on the Applegate Trail. (T. Times).

Ice hockey at Hoodlum Lake near So. 12th St. and So. Puget Sound. Six young boy with sticks in hand, including Franklin Elementary School students Milton and Kenneth Parkhurst, are ready for a game of "shinny," the "grandpappy" of hockey, on the frozen lake. The lake, a favorite hangout for youngsters, served as the old swimmin' hole in the summer, the frog catchin' place in the spring and the ice rink in the winter. The lake was filled in when Franklin Park was developed on the site. (T. Times 1/21/1937, pg. 15)

ca. 1937. Ed Griffin's champion English Mastiff "Broomcourt Nell" and her litter of puppies. The puppies were born in September of 1936, 7 females and 3 males. The puppies and their sires were the only English Mastiffs in the NorthWest.

ca. 1937. Exterior elevation of the Rust Building, a multi-story office building, at So. 11th Street and Pacific Avenue. The Rust Building is named for its builder William R. Rust. It was designed by the architectural firm of Sutton, Whitney and Dugan. The twelve story building opened in 1920. Since 1986, it has been known as the Seafirst Center. ca. 1937. Full view of the Rust Building on 11th Street between Commerce and Pacific Avenue. Sandstone clad steel frame 12-story business block for William R. Rust by Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, Architects, 1920. It was known as the Townsend building from 1929- 1931. It was remodeled by Seafirst bank in 1986 and renamed the Seafirst Center.

ca. 1937. On April 3, 1937, the city of Bremerton played host for the semi-annual convention of the State Association of Young Men's Business Clubs. The pictured group of Bremerton YMBC members worked hard to make the convention a successful reality. They are, left to right, Dore Witzke, Wayne Murphy, Dr. G.A. In January of 1937, Julius Twohy was photographed as he stood on a scaffold to create a mural across the 72 foot long dining room wall at the Cushman Hospital at 2002 East 28th Street. The young Ute Indian artist from Seattle paused in his work to explain the story in his "Indian writing" to Dr. John N. Alley, superintendent of the hospital. The art work was part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. The mural, photographed here after three months of work, was projected to take another three months to complete. It told the legend of the Thunder Bird, the Indian weather god, in the language of Twohy's ancestors. The figures were outlined in thick black and would be filled in with brilliant red, blue, yellow and reddish brown. The artist was a member of the Ute tribe from the Uintah Basin in eastern Utah.
