1977 Daffodil Festival Parade. Riding on the back of a killer whale float and accompanied by princesses Mary Riggleman and Karon DiLoreto is Carol Glenn, 1977 Daffodil Queen from Bethel High School. Miss Glenn was the first queen chosen from her school and the first African-American to receive the honor. 1977 Tacoma Home Show. "Because life is precious," RSI Security & Fire Systems advertised a number of life saving equipment at the 1977 Tacoma Home Show. A smiling representative of the firm sits behind a red-curtained table awaiting interested passersby. "Life Ladders," smoke alarms, security lighting and cameras were all on display.

1977 Tacoma Home Show. Once again, the annual Tacoma Home Show was held at the Tacoma Mall where visitors could stroll comfortably under cover to view the latest ideas for remodelers, redecorators, home builders and landscapers. Among the many exhibits was the well-known Atlas Van Lines hydroplane U-76, whose appearance was sponsored by Ed's Moving & Storage, 1632 E. 26th. Ed's Moving & Storage was an agent for Atlas Van Lines. A scale model of the hydroplane would be given away in a free drawing. The U-76 was piloted and owned by Bill Muncey. Mayor Gordon Johnston and Pierce County Commissioner Clay Huntington jointly do the honors in opening the 1977 Tacoma Home Show held at the Tacoma Mall. At the far left is Gordon Rockwell, show chairman. Each year thousands of spectators would peruse the various exhibits demonstrating the latest trends in home decor. Model home. This is the kitchen and dining area of the model home, "Springtime," built by Crest Builders in 1977. The home in the new Meadowcreek subdivision was on display in March of that year, in time for the Tacoma Home Show. Light colored General Electric appliances and cabinets helped to create a feeling of spaciousness in this one-story contemporary home. The solid yellow vinyl floor and daisy-filled wallpaper seemed to produce a "springtime" atmosphere. Model home. "Springtime" by Crest Builders was one of the model homes on display for the 1977 Tacoma Home Show. The one-story contemporary unit had horizontal fir siding and a walnut brown composition roof. The three- bedroom, fully insulated home contained about 1360 square feet and had a two-car garage. It was located at 812 -136th St. Ct. E. in suburban Pierce County's new Meadowcreek subdivision. All utilities were underground and the site was landscaped. Studio portrait of Dr. Barbara A. Wesley. She had been recently named a new trustee at Tacoma Community College. Dr. Wesley was a community lab placement specialist at Stadium High School. She was a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Wesley was a former high school and community college teacher. Studio portrait of Claude Purvis. Mr. Purvis, of 5936 South Sheridan Ave., was the president of the family-run Claude C. Purvis Co., Tacoma contractors. The firm handled general, industrial, commercial and residential work. It was named Regional Prime Contractor of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration after being nominated for the award by McChord Air Force Base. (TNT 5-29-77, A-11-article on award)
Exterior general view of AA Construction building. AA Construction was located in the 4600 block of Pacific Avenue in a remodeled building which was formerly a home. As the large sign on the brick standard indicated, the wood-and-brick building housed both AA Construction and Anita's Interiors. The 1976 City Directory listed Graig Anderson as president of the firm with Anita Anderson as vice-president/treasurer. AA Construction had been in Tacoma for over 26 years. Mrs. Pero posed on January 22, 1977, with a decorated fez which indicated her role within the Masonic organization. She would be installed as high priestess during ceremonies at the Scottish Rite Temple on April 2, 1977. Mrs. Pero resided at 4715 Bridgeport Way W. in University Place. ca. 1976. Bridal portrait of Sherrie Rule. She is wearing a large brimmed hat with accompanying veil and short-sleeved white wedding gown. A bouquet of white summer flowers and a string of pearls completes the wedding outfit. The bride's necklace was one that her great-grandmother, Mrs. Nelle Rule of Iowa, had worn on her wedding day. Miss Rule would be marrying Douglas William Wamberg on August 7, 1976, at afternoon ceremonies held at Christ Lutheran Church. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J Rule and a graduate of Lakes High School. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wamberg of Camas and a graduate of Clover Park High School. Center St. is near the top. The Sprague Ave. overpass is in upper left corner along with offramp leading to Hwy 16. ca. 1976. Aerial view of longtime Tacoma foundry, Atlas Foundry & Machine Co., taken in the spring or summer of 1976. The company was founded in 1899 and began making iron castings for the Northwest logging industry. After the foundry was purchased by the Long family 30 years later, it began making steel as well as iron. By the 1930's, half of the firm's production was steel castings. Atlas is still in business in the 21st century; it is now known as Atlas Castings & Technology. This aerial photograph of the foundry in 1976 shows the city and roadways have grown in the 77 years since Atlas was founded. Atlas is bordered by Wilkeson (the long street extending vertically on the right) and South Tacoma Way (bottom) with Center St. on top. Stanley Elementary School is at the end of Wilkeson (top of photograph). I-5 freeway is on the bottom of photograph with the exits to So. 38th St. and Hwy 16 above. The photographer's notes for this image indicate that it is a photograph of "Aza Destiny." The black Arabian horse, Aza Destiny, was born in 1971, sired by Azraff ex Bint Bass Hisan. Madrigal Singers. The University of Puget Sound continued its tradition of presenting fine musical performances to its student body and the general public from such groups as the Madrigal Singers. The 16-member ensemble posed for their annual group portrait on November 22, 1976. Each year the Madrigal Singers, led by Dr. Bruce Rodgers, presented a special Christmas program for the community to enjoy. Studio portrait of newly-elected Supreme Court Justice, Floyd V. Hicks. He had picked up 87% of the votes in the September primary defeating State Appeals Court Judge Keith Callow. Apartment complex drawing. Engineers and architects for the project are the William S. Tsao & Co., P.S. with Lyle N. Kussman, architect. The owner of the apartment complex is Conifer Developments, Inc. of Tacoma. The drawing features multiple units with abundant landcaping, irregularly shaped swimming pool, large six-sided rec room and tennis courts. This is the $1,225,000 project to be built called "Park 19." It will include 70 units in six buildings. Park 19 will be located on a 5-acre hilly site on the northeast corner of South 19th & Tyler. Fibreboard Corporation. Located in Sumner at Zehnder St./Steele Ave., the sprawling box manufacturer's products scattered on plant grounds could easily be seen by air in October of 1976. Boxes could be easily transported by railroad and highway. Included on the property was a recycled-board mill and corrugated-container plant. Employment was estimated at about 180 workers. It was learned in November of 1976 that the company, headquartered apparently in San Francisco, intended to sell the unit at Sumner and all other plants in its carton group. Flying almost directly overhead the large box manufacturer, Fibreboard Corporation, is a plane or helicopter containing a Richards Studio photographer.
