Cliff Sign Co. hoists the new Tacoma Hotel sign to the top of the building. The ground floor is occupied by the National Cash Register Co., Budget Finance Plan, the Western Air Lines ticket office and at the far right, with the sign 1/4 visible, the Servicemen's Center at 115 So. 9th. This was the location of the bowling alley.

Exterior view of downtown Tacoma. In a photograph taken on September 24, 1951, looking southwest from 9th and A Streets, are a number of prominent Tacoma buildings. The multi-story "new" Tacoma Hotel and corresponding Duncan's Tacoma Hotel Garage are sandwiched between financial institutions, the Tacoma Savings & Loan and the Bank of California. After a fire destroyed the main Tacoma Hotel, its annex was remodeled in 1936 in the Savage-Scofield Building. The Bowes Building, also designed by architects Heath & Twitchell, was built in 1908 and housed the Tacoma Savings & Loan; it was later added to the National Register. Also visible are the large Puget Sound National Bank building, General Paint, Washington Building, and the Rust Building.

Mayor Harry P. Cain, about to leave for Army service, outside the "New" Tacoma Hotel in May, 1943. Fittingly, there is an Army vehicle parked next to the city's chief executive. He was preparing to depart for a 16-week military school stay in Virginia. He would later fight in Italy, serve the Allied Control Comm. at Naples on Gen. Eisenhower's staff, and would be promoted to Full Colonel for valor in the Battle of the Bulge, Dec. 1944. Cain would return to Tacoma in 1945 and assume the duties of mayor. The group had gathered to meet Brigadier William Parker, of New York City, national director of the USO- Salvation Army. Brig. Tacoma Mayor Harry P. Cain, seated in rear at the head table, was one of the principal speakers at the annual induction meeting of the Tacoma Active Club, held at the (New) Tacoma Hotel on December 12, 1940. 46 initiates were accepted into the group's membership. In addition, Active International president Ted Little of Olympia and the mayor-elect of Olympia, Truman Trullinger, were guest speakers. ALBUM 12. (T.Times 12-13-40, p. 12)

State Plumbers Convention at the Tacoma Hotel, on May 18, 1940. Group of men and women seated outside the "New" Tacoma Hotel on "A" Street. The entrance canopy had been salvaged or copied from the original Tacoma Hotel across the street which burned in 1935. This was the 45th annual convention which attracted about 150 master plumbers to Tacoma. The plumbers association promoted stricter plumbing codes to aid public health and sought more research into new plumbing methods and fixtures. A.E. Warren of Spokane was president and G.A. "Miss Grunow" provided a little cheesecake as the company introduced their new refrigerator at the Southwest Washington Grunow Dealers banquet at the new Tacoma Hotel, formerly known as the Tacoma Hotel Annex, on February 18, 1937. The "Pur-Aire" refrigerator featured the "econo-phase vacuum unit" for fast freezing and low cost, a Grunow aerator to keep food fresher and safer and a super size evaporator. Southwest Washington Grunow Dealers banquet at the new Tacoma Hotel, formerly known as the Tacoma Hotel Annex. The annex served as the Tacoma Hotel after the main historic building at 913 A St. was destroyed by fire in October of 1935. The annex opened as the Tacoma Hotel in January of 1936, after extensive remodeling. Grunow manufactured appliances and this banquet was intended to introduce their new refrigerator. ca. 1936. The Tacoma Hotel Annex dining room, designed as a duplicate of an English tavern. The Annex served as the Tacoma Hotel after the main building at 913 A St. was destroyed by fire in October of 1935. The grand opening for the new Tacoma Hotel was in January of 1936. Although not in the grand style of the original building, the new dining room was interesting in its resemblance to a tavern with a coved ceiling and faux stone walls. Round and rectangular tables with white cloths and wooden chairs cover the room. A basket of flowers rests on the floor. (T. Times 1/21/1936, pg. 8-9; TNT 1/21/1936, pg. 9)

The counter has a curved end and small wooden stools. The annex had its grand opening as the Tacoma Hotel in January of 1936. The historic original hotel was destroyed by fire in October of 1935. Photograph shows the reception desk, Colonial furniture, clock on wall, many flowers, the candy counter and what appears to be a wooden phone booth to the right. Walls are decorated with a 3/4 faux stone work finish and plaques of "coats of arms" and stenciling at the ceiling level. The plaques were salvaged from the original hotel.
