Scenic views from Eastern Washington. Rocky outcrops are seen along the hills above the Grand Coulee Dam along the Columbia River. Part of the utility facilities are seen across the river and housing is seen in the valley below the rocks near the center of the photograph. Geologic forces left deep coulees and scarred channels of the plateau surfaces of the area. Great fissures opened in the plateau during the mid-Miocene epoch and over hundreds of thousands of years enormous lava flows gushed from them leaving extrusions of Yakima basalt over 250,000 square miles and in places to a thickness of more than 4,000 feet.
