ca. 1890. A glimpse into Steilacoom's past as two buildings on the north side of Commercial Street, between Main and Balch, were photographed ca. 1890. The smaller building to the right was built by George Weller in 1850 as a butcher shop. Henry Rupp later purchased it and operated a beer hall in it during the 1880's and 1890's. At the time of this photograph the larger two-story building was divided into a post office (on the left) and a butcher shop. There was a residence on the second floor. Both buildings were torn down in 1938.

ca. 1916. In 1916, Steilacoom School District #1 built a new brick school for $15,000. In the winter of 1916-17, three teachers including the principal Miss Beatrice Blair, and grades 1-8 moved into the new school. The school was built directly in front of the old wooden two-story school originally built in 1892 on land purchased from school board member, E.R. Rogers, on Nisqually Street. The above photograph shows both schools; the old school was sold to a Mr. Gamble for $25. It was torn down in 1917. Managed by Floyd Bloom, the K&W Thriftway in Parkland would be celebrating its grand opening on December 12, 1963. It was combined with Save Way Drugs, managed by Don Shaw. Besides the usual grocery items of meat, fresh produce, and beverages, shoppers could also purchase hardware, variety items, pick up prescriptions and enjoy dining at the snack bar. A new concept of merchandising was used called "total shopping," whereby everything in both stores could be checked through the grocery checkstands instead of individual departments. This was thought to save time and steps for shoppers. Photograph ordered by the News Tribune. (TNT 12-11-63, A-10)

Three nurses are shown pushing juvenile beds and cribs through a corridor, at Mary Bridge Hospital in this photograph from May of 1959. The hospital, which opened in March of 1955, treated patients from birth to age 14 and served all of southwest Washington. When built, the hospital contained only 40 beds; it was built with the third floor unfinished to allow for future expansion. By 1959 the hospital was constantly overcrowded. A constant shifting of beds was neccessary to meet the needs of the children. Some infectious cases required isolation and boys and girls were always segregated. The hospital contained no single rooms; it had 10 two bed rooms and four 5 bed rooms. In 1959, plans were being made and funds raised to complete the third floor and to build an extension, adding 60 beds for a total of 100. (TNT 5/3/1959, pg. A-14, TNT 5/13/1959, pg. B-9)

The bas relief at the front of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Parkland, ordered by the Olympian Stone Co. of Seattle. The original church at this site was "The Gray Church" built in 1907 and also named Trinity Lutheran. It was demolished in 1957 and this new church, designed by John Richards of Lea, Pearson and Richards, was dedicated in March of 1959. The relief over the door was designed by Pacific Lutheran College Art Professor George Roskos. The three ton sculpture illustrates the parable of the sower, how both seed and the word of God need fertile soil to take root and grow.

These eight Tacoma Elks Lodge members were planners of the 13th annual Elks Salmon Derby held on September 20, 1959. Displayed around them are the generous prizes awarded to the top fishermen. First prize was the 16-foot Starlet boat and trailer valued at $1,500, second, the 35 HP Mercury outboard and third, the hunting rifle. Various other prizes are displayed hung on the fishing net, mostly lures and rods and reels. The 1959 Derby drew 894 entrants who caught 101 fish. First prize was won by Morris Clausen. His 12 lb. 3 oz. salmon, caught at the mouth of the Puyallup River, was lured with some herring left over from a Westport fishing jaunt the week before and preserved in the freezer. Chuck Horjes, football player from Stadium High, University of Washington and the College of Puget Sound, took second place with a 12-pounder and Emil Tietje was third. (TNT 9/13/1959, pg. Governor Albert D. Rosellini (far right) was one of many civic and political leaders who lent a hand at the first annual Fort Steilacoom Old Fashioned Threshin' Bee on August 30, 1959, held on Western State Hospital grounds. Although he did wear a straw hat, his white shirt, tie and dress slacks made him a little overdressed for much real work. Crowds estimated at 13,000 attended the Bee and enjoyed watching the steam powered threshers in action, devoured pancakes at the special breakfast, and rode Steve Pease's cable car around the 825-acre hospital. 196 bushels of oats and mountains of straw were harvested. The event was sponsored by the Western Steam Friends Association, the South Tacoma Kiwanis Club, and Western State. ALBUM 10. (TNT 8-30-59, p. 1, 8-31-59, p. 1)
