Shriners of the Afifi temple. Floyd Kinnear, Robert P. Allen, W.H.Mierow, Walter Sutter, Clinton Hull, and E.M. Densmore are on the committee in charge of Tacoma's Temple's Golden Jubilee ceremony and ball. The 23rd Annual convention of the Northwest Loyal Order of Moose was held in Tacoma in July of 1938. Over 2500 members of 32 lodges from all parts of the Northwest, covering Alaska to the California border and east to Montana, descended on the Winthrop Hotel, convention headquarters. Over 1000 participated in the parade held on July 22nd, from its formation at 7th & Pacific to its conclusion at the Winthrop. Here women in white uniforms are pictured marching down a Tacoma street. The Order of Red Men trace their origins to certain secret Patriotic Societies founded before the American Revolution. This is the Afifi Temple Arab Patrol, photographed within the Masonic Temple, 47 Saint Helens Ave., in June of 1932. It is the same photograph as 411, image 9 except that part of the background has been lightened.

ca. 1925. A group of law officers, dressed in uniforms with badges and topped off with straw skimmers, pose in front of the B.P.O.E. (Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks) lodge. The man to the left is possibly Pierce County Sheriff John Bjorklund. The picture is probably related to the celebration of Straw Hat Day circa 1925. (WSHS- negative A844-0)

Eleventh Annual Conclave of the Order of DeMolay, held in August of 1935 in Tacoma. One of the highlights was the downtown parade held on the 31st. The route was down St. Helens Ave. to Pacific, to 13th and up Broadway. A parade of young men were photographed marching along Broadway, 1100 block, toward the Elk's Temple, Tacoma. Buildings and signage visible.

The bright lights of Lincoln Bowl look down on the thousands of Shriners present for their annual Pacific Northwest Shrine Association convention in 1957. "Shrine-O-Rama" was open to the general public who watched the marching units and listened to the various Shrine bands. ALBUM 15.

Knights Templar parade. The Commandery unit of the Seattle Knights, dressed in regalia, marched north on Broadway near 9th Street on May 11, 1936. On June 5, 1937, as a function of the Shrine spring reunion in Tacoma, the Afifi Temple held a Ball and banquet at the Winthrop Hotel. Shriners and their wives were the guests. Here the photographer was setting up camera to take photographs of people in the receiving line.

The White and Gold Baton Troupe. Twenty-eight girls dressed in satin costumes as drum majorettes and posed with batons in the Knights of Pythias Castle Hall in May of 1939. The head majorette, front and center, has been identified as Connie Francis Imus. Wallace Cory Imus, man on the extreme right back row, organized the White and Gold Baton Troupe along with Clara Imus. The White and Gold Baton Troupe, composed of girls 7-12 years old, would be performing at the Ray C. Roberts Hall at Sixth & Anderson Sts. on June 8, 1939. The entertainment would be free and open to the public. Beside the twirling, individual song and dance special numbers would be presented. Photograph ordered by Wallace Muir. In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. In the front row, left to right, are Eva Nomellini, Carmella Pupo, Rose Pellegrini, Mobel Monaldi, Kate Lanza and Lena Reda. 2nd row, Rose Furaco, Mary Recona, Mary Carbone, Esther Reda, Elvira Salatino, Rose Colombini and Caroline Turco. New officers of the Maccabee Lodge. Group of men wearing suits with boutonnieres and women wearing long gowns with corsages posed in front of an elaborately decorated stage on January 24, 1940. The new tent and hive officers of the Knights and Ladies of Maccabees were installed that evening in public rites. Roy Devish and Ethel Koch are the respective leaders. Rainbow Girls Parade. State Convention. Costumed band aboard a mule drawn buckboard proceeds along streetcar tracks on Broadway at the corner of South 9th Street. Spectators are standing in the street watching the parade. The 13th annual Grand Assembly ran from July 12 through July 15, 1939, with nearly 1,200 girls in attendance.

Five of the oldest members of the Tacoma Elks Club gather to discuss the Good Old Days on Old Timers' night held in January of 1938. They are, left to right, S.J. Maxwell, member #2, whose career was in shipping; George L. Palmer, in the printing business and served once as Deputy Sheriff; S.A. Perkins, member #3, newspaper publishing; Major Charles O. Bates, law; and Calvin S. Heilig, member #1, theater owner in Tacoma and Portland. "Sam" Perkins served as master of ceremonies at the meeting where many memories were shared and enjoyed. (T. Ivanhoe Commandery of the Knights Templar. Members of the Knights Templar are dressed in decorated robes, uniforms, hats and crowns in front of a stage hung with a large cross at the Masonic Temple. York Rites delegates to the annual state convention arrived Saturday, May 10, 1947, for meetings of the three grand bodies. The meetings of the twenty-eight commanderies of the Knights Templar was highlighted by a parade from the Masonic Temple to the First Christian Church on May 11th, 1947. This was the 60th conclave of grand commandery of Knights Templar of Washington (T.Times, 5/9/1947, p.1)
