Ceremonial portraits from the Daughters of the Nile convention. The female accompaniment to the Shriners, the Nile daughters traditions hark back to ancient days. The annual session of the Supreme Temple of the Daughters of the Nile was held in Tacoma June 6-10, 1938. It was the first convention of this group to be held in Tacoma since 1925. In October of 1939, members of the Co-Ed Club planning committee were busy planning a hoe down to be held at the Dash Point Community House on the 28th of the month. The rustic barn dance gave the young women and their dates a chance to don harvest related costumes. Seven young women posed for this publicity shot, dressed appropriately for the farm in straw hats, overalls and gingham dresses. Junior Women's Club Hobby Show at the Winthrop Hotel. Club members inspected the merchandise on display which included neckties, vases, woven fabrics and a basket. They were there to attend the annual dinner and hobby show of the club which was held in the hotel's Crystal Ballroom on April 12, 1940. On August 9, 1939, Emory Reagan Sr., a flagpole painter, used a "bos'n's chair" to ascend the 150 foot flagpole at the University Union Club at 539 Broadway. The pole took 5 1/2 hours to paint, during which time Reagan remained aloft. His young sons Duane, 8, and Emory, Jr., 11, kept him supplied with paint and brushes, sent up by a rope and pulley. Wauna Club dance on Roof Garden at Hotel Winthrop. The elegantly dressed Jessie and Walter J. Frankland and Dr. and Mrs. James Gourley practice a step or two before leaving the lounge for the dance floor on April 22, 1939. Ira L. Davisson, seated, Utilities Commissioner and Acting Mayor during the illness of Mayor Siegle, helps the Young Men's Business Club boost Tacoma by purchasing poster stamps of Tacoma and nearby scenes. The stamps are being sold by Ebner Mortenson, right, stamp chairman and Dr. H. V. Hoover, left, club president. The stamps will be affixed to 35,000 pieces of departmental mail. In April, Tacoma was in an uproar when Tacoma Postmaster George Fishburne, on order from Washington D.C., banned the Jubilee poster stamps on U.S. mail as being "illegally" similar to some postage stamps. The Post Office recommended that the present seals be withdrawn and larger ones issued, so postal authorities could accept them as "labels." (T. Times, 3/29/1939, p.18; T. Times 4/13/1939, pg. 1)

The Spinster Club held a "Bowery" dance at the Century Ballroom in Fife on February 25, 1938. The costume cabaret dance offered favors as prizes for the best costumes. Three unidentified young women in costumes smile at a man dressed in a sailor's uniform who is lighting a candle placed in the neck of a beer bottle. The bottles with candles in them were then placed on tables as part of the New York decor. (TNT 2/24/1938, p.13-article)

Sam Perkins celebrates his 73rd birthday with friends at the Tacoma Club. Mayor Smitley (far right) and another man sing happy birthday as he prepares to blow out the candles on his huge cake. Mr. Perkins was born in Boston on May 6, 1865 and was christened Sidney Albert Perkins. That moniker was soon shortened to "Sam." For his 73rd birthday, he was feted by some of the friends he made in over 50 years of business in Tacoma. Mr. Perkins was best known locally as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. (T. Girl Scout Day Camp at Point Defiance C.C.C. Camp. Archery practice. Woman instructs a young girl in the use of a bow. Two other girls hold bows while another girl removes arrows from a bulls-eye target. For the first time, the four year old Tacoma GS Day Camp would be located at the abandoned CCC Camp near Ft. For six weeks, "Pennies for Happiness" would be the slogan of the Dr. Edward Rich Orthopedic Guild as they collected pennies in their annual drive. Beginning April 6, 1942, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) launched special "Keep Fit" classes at its 405 Broadway location. Instruction was being offered in golf, tennis, swimming and Badminton (pictured.) Classes would be held both morning and evenings to accomodate those working in the defense industries. The YWCA operated under the adage learned from war torn England, that adequate exercise was a morale builder. (T. Times 4/10/1942, pg. 3)

Grand Officers of the Eastern Star on stage in June of 1942. Flags of several nations, including the United States, and silhouettes of Presidents Lincoln and Washington serve as decorations. 1500 Eastern Star members attended the organization's 59th annual meeting held at the Masonic Temple. During the war years, busy Red Cross hands proved adept with needles and thread, sending handmade items to servicemen all around the world. On September 29, 1942, a German made field gun was being removed from the grounds of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion by the Army. It was donated by the Legion members to be broken down and used to make weapons to fight its original manufacturers, the Germans. The cannon was a 1906 Krupp-Essen of World War I vintage. It was presented to the Post in the early 1920's by Hugh Wallace, then ambassador to France, who had a home in Tacoma. It had graced the grounds of their post on "G" St. for many years. Despite the good example set by the Legion members and a plea from Mayor Cain, the Park Board decided to keep all of its display cannons for the time being, rather than having them dismantled for scrap. October 15-30, 1942 was the fund raising campaign for Tacoma's War Chest. The War Chest was a branch of the Community Chest that specifically funded wartime charities, such as the USO and refugee relief groups. Part of the publicity for the upcoming drive was a play that emphasized that volunteers would be going to homes and businesses to collect donations and pledges for the drive.The campaign was very successful, it went over the top of the goal at $369,822, two days before the end of the drive.
