Navy Mothers Club. The Tahoma chapter of the Navy Mothers Club met on Tuesday, May 6, 1969, at the Odd Fellows Temple for installation of new officers. Invitations were issued to the Puyallup and Sumner Navy Mothers Clubs and the general public was also invited to attend. Lt. Frank Thomas was the guest speaker for the event. Mrs. T.R. Baker was installed as the new commander by installing officer Mrs. Frank Parks. View of club members; each woman is wearing a corsage of daisies. American Legion Last Man Club. Twelve men were in attendance on November 10, 1970, at a meeting of the American Legion Edward B. Rhodes Post No. 2 Last Man Club. The annual gathering was held at Brad's Restaurant, 9201 Pacific Ave. A plaque, adorned with two American flags, is on display with the names of past commanders. James P. Posed on the rooftop of the Winthrop Hotel with the towering Medical Arts Building prominently in the background are officers of the Department of Washington and Alaska, of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-65. They were holding their 57th annual convention at the Winthrop from June 7-10, 1970. Believed to be in attendance was Mrs. Fayette Bell of Los Angeles, the organization's national president. Also believed to be pictured above was Mrs. John McDougall of Seattle, department president who presided over the convention's meetings. Among activities held during the convention was a memory banquet where a scholarship would be awarded to a college student who was a descendant of a Civil War veteran. Memorial services - Elks Temple. Memorial services to honor "absent Brothers" were held at the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174 on Wednesday evening the 2nd of December, 1970. Large arrangements of flowers and small potted trees graced the stage steps. White gates were placed before a backdrop of trees and a large white building shown in the distance. United Good Neighbors. 30 executives on loan from various Tacoma businesses posed for a group portrait at the old Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, on November 3, 1971. Industry and government had loaned a total of 73 executives to the United Good Neighbors campaign who had been working since mid-August. The drive to collect funds for the UGN officially began on September 14th. The group's goal was to collect $1,928,000 in the campaign which was to end on November 12th, a bare two months away. For the second year in a row, the Royal Arch Masons of Washington met at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the Mark Masters degree to certain recipients in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout Washington congregated in August, 1951; invitations were limited to Masons only and not the general public. Centralia Chapter #44 coordinated the gathering while officers of Sunset Chapter #23, Chehalis, opened the ceremonies. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)

View of Master of Foxhounds Earl Craig and wife Leona. Members of the Woodbrook Hunt Club are making preparations for the start of the hunting season in early October, 1951. Earl Craig, Master of Foxhounds, steadies the ladder while his wife Leona touches the Woodbrook sign on their brand new red barn. The Woodbrook sign is made of white horseshoes. The Craigs suffered tremendous losses when Woodbrook caught fire in the summer of 1950. A small white sign warning that smoking is prohibited around the stables is a sober reminder of fire's dangers. In December of 1950, Mikel Ann Thomas was dressed as the New Year wearing a tall party hat and a ribbon across her chest. She was helping with the promotion of the Elks New Year's Eve dance. Mikel was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thomas. The Elks promised a festive evening with many favors and surprises. Ordered by the Elks. (TNT, 12/27/1950, p.23)

Thirty one members of Delta Kapa Phi at the College of Puget Sound pose for their group portrait on their porch with Santa Claus. The fraternity held a Christmas Party for underpriviledged children in 1950. The fraternity had 58 active members this year. A sign hanging from the porch has the Greek letters painted on it . Seven members of the Young Mens Business Club Auxiliary posed for a photograph to promote the "Spring Enchantress" fashion and beauty show in March 1951. The fashion show was presented at a luncheon held on April 5, 1951 at The Tropics, 735 Commerce. The show included a hair stylist who demonstrated new styles of hair dressing, with emphasis on pleated and folded styles, on models adorned in evening gowns, jewels, flowers and perfume. Exposure of Elks sponsored handball team. This Tacoma handball team competed in the Pacific Northwest AAU Championships in Spokane March 30-31, 1951. The team was sponsored by the Tacoma Elks Lodge, No. 174. Pictured on the front row, left to right, are George Baydo, Swan Johnson, and Bill Reel. The back row, left to right, is comprised of Pete Sabutis, Bill Faraone, Ernie Johnson, Jack Baty and Bob Holder. Faraone was the Tacoma city singles champion and he also held the doubles title with partner Ernie Johnson. Faraone, a Tacoma police officer, won the singles title in Spokane. Dr. Wilmot D. Read is wearing a traditional Scottish Rite cap in this studio portrait. Dr. Read was born in Iowa in 1880 and came to Tacoma in 1889. He attended grade and high school in Tacoma. He graduated from Cooper- Medical College (Stanford University) in 1903 and returned to Tacoma to begin his medical practice. In 1904 he served as assistant superintendent of Western State Hospital. In 1922 he organized Tacoma's first Public Health League. He was also a leader in the prepaid medical service field. Dr. Read served overseas with the Medical Corps during World War I. He was married to Kathryn Mae Read and had two sons, Dr. Jess W. Read, surgeon, and Dr. Robert D. Read, dentist, both of Tacoma. Dr. Read died April 1958 at age 78. Ordered by Scottish Rite. Articles from the collection of Mrs. J.C. Haley were to be part of the international exhibit held at the Y.W.C.A. on November 29, 1951. Mrs. Herman Myhrman, Mrs. Norman Grant and Chinese visitor Miss Ann Sun (from left) happily examine some of the majolica ware from Italy that Mrs. Haley collected on her last visit to Europe. National costumes, folk songs and other collections from foreign lands would be displayed for the public in Weyerhaeuser Hall. This exhibit would be the climax of the World Fellowship Week. Members of the American Legion's Last Man Club met in November, 1951, in the Model Grill's Flame Room. All the men are wearing caps denoting the Tacoma affiliation. The Club was formed in December of 1938 by World War I veterans who were past Commanders of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion. Eight flags are draped over empty chairs in front of the standing men, to honor those who have passed away. The last survivor would receive a 1917 bottle of cognac, kept in a safe deposit box at Puget Sound Bank.

Sigma Chi sweethearts group. The "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" would be announced at the Delta Phi Chapter's annual formal Sweetheart Ball at the Lake Wilderness Lodge. Sigma Chi was a men's social fraternity at the College of Puget Sound. The sweetheart candidates were, left to right, Roberta Elson, from Kirkland, of Chi Omega, Alayne Fletcher, from Olympia, of Alpha Phi, Joyce Tyler, of Marysville, of Delta Delta Delta, Diane Colwell, of Seattle, of Pi Beta Phi and Marilyn Lyons, of Auburn, Independents. Sigma Alpha Epsilon banquet. On March 11, 1955, over 100 members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon from Tacoma and Southwest Washington gathered for a dinner at the University Union Club to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the fraternity's founding. Albert Balch, member of the Master Builders and community designer, was the guest speaker. His topic was "Building for Tomorrow." 1955 American Red Cross annual meeting. A plaque is being presented to Dr. C.G. Trimble by Gordon E. Tatum commemorating Trimble's 30 years of volunteer service with the Tacoma-Pierce County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Lynne Hammond and Sharon Link (l to r) were co-chairmen of the "Hick Hop" held on Saturday May 7, 1955 at the Lake City Community Hall. The costume party had no reservation list, no formality and was intended for Tacoma teenagers. All teenagers were welcome and the proceeds were donated to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The hall was transformed into a miniature hobo jungle for the affair, with hobo manikins, campfires, trees and the proper atmosphere to make any "hobo" feel at home.
