No you're not seeing double; in February of 1936, Naval Avenue School in Bremerton boasted of 8 sets of twins, more twins than any other institution in the city of comparable size. Four sets of twins were enrolled in the first grade. Mrs. Lorraine W. Pike, 6-A teacher at Horace Mann school, 5234 South J Street, worked with Gordon Brunswick (left) and Stanley Nelson on the model German village that their class was building in April of 1937. The highly detailed model, with thatched-roofed buildings and tiny villagers was built by the class to help them visualize what life was like in Germany in 410 A.D. (T. Times, 4/1/1937 p.3).

Lincoln High School shop teacher Ned Ubben, right, watched in December of 1937 as Irene Kuhne and Otto Robinson mended two of the items given to needy families in Tacoma by the school's students. Maintaining a tradition started in 1922 by The Lincoln News, the school's student publication, Lincoln students filled 66 Christmas baskets with food and toys. The baskets were then distributed to families selected from a list provided by the state welfare bureau. (T. Times 12-21-1937, p. 12)

In December of 1937, Peggy Bently and Lucille Rudd (order not known) were "Santa's Twins" at Lincoln High School. The two young men are Harold Oswald (left) and Gordon Ambrose. Peggy and Lucille were the organizing force behind the Lincoln News' efforts to provide a Merry Christmas to 66 needy families in Tacoma. In a tradition begun in 1922, food, toys and clothing were collected by Lincoln High School students and distributed in gift baskets to families in need selected by Tacoma's social service agencies. Used toys that were donated were repaired in the Lincoln High School metal and wood shops, and clothes was repaired or sewn in the school's home economics classes. (T. Times 12-21-1937, p. 12)

William Hardie, the Lincoln High School track coach, posed with five of his track men in September of 1937. By the end of the year, the Lincoln Abes track team had won the state track title for the third consecutive year. With six returning letterman for the 1937-38 team, coach Hardie was hoping to make it four in a row. In the back row are, left to right, Hardie, Rankin, Wilcox and Sharp. At the state competition in Pullman, "Hurrying" Harold Berndt finished first in the 100 and 200 yard dashes and was high point man for the tournament. (T. Two students in Natalie Blix's first grade class at McKinley School play house in the miniature home built by the class. Creative teacher Miss Blix used the construction to teach the children vocabulary. Pacific Lutheran College President O.A. Tingelstad poses with the Swedish granite cornerstone for the new library building at the October 23, 1937 cornerstone laying ceremony. The cornerstone reads in Latin : "Verbum Dei Manet in Aeternum MCMXXXVII." The Latin phrase translates as "The word of God remains in Eternity 1937." The building was designed by Emanuel J. Graduating class at Horace Mann School. The graduating class included 28 students, 10 boys and 18 girls. The class is posed in front of the entrance of the school, which was constructed in 1901. C.A. 9A Class, Franklin B. Gault School, Jan. 1927 Franklin B. Gault intermediate school opened in February of 1926. The school was designed by Hill & Mock. It was intended to serve Tacoma's East Side. It was named after Dr. Gault, superintendent of Tacoma's schools from 1888-1892. The school, with additions, is still in use in 2006. (WSHS)

Eight very serious couples were photographed at Washington School wearing colonial costumes and powdered wigs. They had been rigorously rehearsing the minuet to perform in a series of three big music festival concerts taking place May 4-6, 1926 at Jason Lee, Lincoln and Mason. The concerts were part of the observance of National Music Week. Despite their expressions, the group felt the experience was great fun.
