In December of 1936, the students in Miss Mary Nicholson's sixth grade class at Horace Mann Elementary School were studying the people and customs of China. The first baseball game of the season for the Tacoma City League. The bleachers at Lincoln High School are filled to capacity with fans watching the 1935 runner up, the Superior Dairy team, play the 1935 champs, the Beacon Oilers. Students in innovative teacher Natalie Blix's first grade classroom at McKinley School in 1937 were proud of the playhouse and library built by the class as a vocabulary lesson. The six year old students learned vocabulary with hammers, saws and nails rather than books. While they constructed the small building at the back of their classroom, they learned the names of the various objects used in its construction and how to recognize them in print. The small "handymen" painted, wallpapered, sewed drapes and built furniture. After completing the playhouse, the children decided to build their own library complete with shelves and books they created themselves. (T.Times, 10-16-1937, p. 1].

On the College of Puget Sound campus in 1934, Kappa Sigma Theta sorority was one of the largest social groups for women, having 41 members on the roll. Dorothy Foxwell was the fall president and Genevieve Grimes served in this role in the spring. The group won the Blanche W. Stevens Scholarship Cup for the highest grade point average. ca. 1934. One of the highlights of Campus Day at the College of Puget Sound was the annual freshman-sophomore tug-of-war. In 1934, the battle was won by the sophomore class of '36, who managed to drag the freshmen into the cold stream of water from the fire hose. (WSHS) (1934 Tamanawas)

The planning committee for the Aquinas Academy Alumnae annual dance was snapped during a meeting in November of 1937. Pictured left to right were Mary Harrison, Patricia Bresnahan, Eileen Whelan and Mrs. Clarence Layton. Seated in front is Mrs. William Whalen. In January of 1936, an unidentified Central School Safety Patrol guard decked out in a new, bright yellow poncho and rain hat holds back a large group of children with his stop sign pole. By 1936, the Tacoma school safety patrol had overseen the street crossings for seven straight years without a single accident. To honor the guards' vigilance, they were given new uniforms that matched their yellow stop signs. (TNT 1/31/1936, pg. 1)

March, 1936, portrait of Dr. Edward H. and Mrs. Florence Todd in their home at 1604 No. Alder. Dr. Todd served as president of the College of Puget Sound for 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. Prior to becoming associated with educational work of the Methodist Church, Dr. Todd was a minister of that denomination for 19 years. The men's dormitory at the college was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948. (T. Times 3/28/1936, pg. 7)

Annie Wright Seminary Christmas Doll Bazaar. Group of young women with dolls arranged in a village scene. The girls are all wearing the same uniform-type dress. The doll bazaar was an annual event at the school, with proceeds going to benefit the Bishop Huston Missionary Society. The bazaar opened with a doll buggy parade by the school's littlest girls. Annie Wright Seminary Christmas Doll Bazaar. The traditional event was held December 4, 1937. Each class of students was responsible for arranging their dolls in their own unique manner.
