The 1938 softball team at Holy Rosary School, 502 So. 30th St., won the city parochial school championship for the second consecutive year. They won 10 of their 12 scheduled games. To get to the top, they defeated St. Leo's 2 times, Visitation 3 times, Sacred Heart 2 times and St. Patricks 3 times. Altar at St. Patrick's Church decorated for Holy Week. The repository for Thursday of Holy Week, shown in the photograph, is prepared apart from the principal altar and hung with precious tapestry and adorned with flowers and candles. The Urn with the blessed sacrament is in the center of the altar and locked with key and lock. (T. Times, 4/16/1938, p. 6).

Dedication of the new Sacred Heart Catholic Church, photograph ordered by the Catholic Northwest Progress. Prior to entering the church, the parishioners were invited to observe the blessing and laying of the cornerstone by the Most Rev. Thomas A. Connolly, Archbishop of Seattle. The new church and rectory were built of reinforced concrete with brick facing at a cost of $316,000. The church also had a convent and parochial school, run by the Sisters of Providence, on the grounds. In 1955, the parish had 600 families and the school had 376 pupils. (TNT 3/18/1955, pg. A-5)

A special mass is celebrated at St. Ann's Catholic Church honoring the Rev. J. F. Milner on the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. The Most Rev. Thomas A. Connolly, Archbishop of Seattle, presided. Milner was born in Dunmanway, County Cork, and studied for the priesthood in Ireland. He was ordained All Hallows June 22, 1930 at 23 years of age. He was named pastor of St. Anns in 1943. Under his direction, many improvements were made in the church and parish hall. The new school and convent were nearing completion at the time of his Silver Jubilee. (TNT 6/25/1955, pg. 4)

Modest altar - St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. The new church had an enormous sanctuary; this September 8, 1958, photograph has been identified by a reader as in all likelihood the chapel in the convent. There were several pews and a wood-based altar. Vertical shutters were slightly opened, allowing light from the stained glass windows to enter. Sanctuary at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. A new parish was formed to serve the people of the city's west end and bridge area; St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church had its first buildings completed in 1958. It was dedicated that year by the Archbishop of Seattle. View of large, wood-enhanced sanctuary shows arched beams, rows of pews and two statues of Mary and the Sacred Heart flanking the altar. Archibishop of Seattle, Thomas A. Connolly, dedicated the rectory, school, and convent on September 21, 1958. The school gym was used as the church at this time since the church was not yet finished. ca. 1960. Exterior of St. Patrick's Church. Designed by architect Frederick Heath, the French Gothic-styled church celebrated its first services on Christmas, 1906. The church was dedicated on June 30, 1907. View of the massive stone building shows a crowd of people milling around the open doors; this spring, 1960, photograph was probably taken at one of the many weddings which occurred on its premises.

On January 9, 1968, official paperwork was signed at the Church of the Holy Communion, making the Church's parish house at 1407 So. I St. the home of the Hilltop Day Care Center. The Center started operation in mid-January, supplying needed child care to low-income parents. It was sponsored by the church and the Hilltop Multi-Service Center and operated Monday through Fridays. It had room for 37 children. The Episcopalian minister on the far right is Rev. E.O. Winckley, the pastor of the church. The woman in the middle of photograph wearing a broach is the director, Mrs. Janabea Gamell; the other woman is unidentified. This is believed to be the Rev. Martin J. Duggan, pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Father Duggan had celebrated his 25th anniversary as a priest in 1950. He is dressed in special vestments which appear to be made of brocade. Six tall candles and candelabra are on the altar behind the pastor with a large cross hanging above. ca. 1943. This view of the New Tacoma Cemetery, with large firs on right and small bushes by gravesites, was taken circa 1943. The park-like surroundings provided a serene resting place for the deceased using non-intrusive flat markers. Wedding party at altar at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Dorothy Blanche Gourley and Robert Frank Mennitti were married during the late summer with Reverend Father Buckman and 250 guests. Dorothy, the daughter of Earl B. and Elsie L. Gourley and Robert, the son of Rocco J. and Jennie Minnitti, were both graduates of Stadium High School. St. Leo's new convent at 13th and G Streets, Times, Father Krebsbach. The new convent of the Sisters of St. Francis was nearly complete and St. Leo's held an Open House September 26, 1948. Construction of the new convent, adjoining St. Leo's church, was begun March 1, 1948, and was expected to be complete the end of September at a cost of $125,000. The building contained 22 rooms in addition to the library, kitchen, community room and laundry facilities. A two-story arch surrounded the main doorway and a round window decorated the corner of the facade. A cross is placed at the peak of the roofline. (T.Times, 9/25/1948, p.1)

Sepia photograph of interior of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Fife. This photograph, taken from the rear of the church on August 26, 1950, shows the clean, sparse lines of the church. Open beam ceilings and dropped lighting along with hopper-style windows provide a suitable accompaniment to the simple altar and rows of wooden pews. Photograph was commissioned by architectural firm of Lance, McGuire & Muri of Tacoma.

Patricia Henry and Alvin Larsen wedding. The bride and groom sign their marriage certificate at St. Josephs while the maid of honor and best man look on. ca. 1930. The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Washington State's oldest Catholic Church. Exterior view of old wooden Catholic Church with clapboard sides, squat belfry. The Church was built in 1855 at Fort Steilacoom and moved to its present site in 1864. It is on both the State and National Historic Registry.

The boys of Saint Patrick's beat Visitation, Holy Rosary, Sacred Heart, and Saint Leo's to win the Parochial Basketball League title in 1936. Only the last names of the players on St. Patrick's team were listed in the Tacoma Times when this photograph was published on March 13, 1936.
